Little peek at an upcoming build that may or may not be for a member on here.
Squared-up inlay
Rough turned grip.
You are really giving that new band saw a workout. What is that burl you used on the ends?
Tiger trout from Custom Fly Grips.
Sweet looking grip for a may or may not be a member. He better be careful of those warning points.

So any status updates?? Looks like its going to be an incredible build!
Not yet. This week. Was waiting for the right size reelseat. This has to be done and delivered in 2 weeks or so.
Any new peeks?

Weeks?? Hopefully its not one of ours! You shouldn't have to wait weeks!

Maybe tonight or tomorrow.

Not one of yours , I got the new seat in 3 days from the time i ordered it.
Well, the update pic will have to come tomorrow cause it appears I made a whoopsie! Got the grip finish turned and was measuring to cut the tenon for the reel seat. The grip was exactly 1/2" too short. WHAT??? only thing I can figure is that i dropped a ring while I was gluing it up. Soooo, it's back in the cork clamp with another ring. Waiting for the glue to dry.
I've been checking this all day waiting for the update lol
Just got it glued up on the blank. Here's a couple quick and dirty pics in the clamp.
Hey Scott your starting to put a smile on my face.
I think it looks even better today. I applied the Tru Oil after a quick clean-up with 320 paper.
You'll have an even bigger smile when I hand it to you next Saturday!
I'll try to get it slimed shortly there after.
Posted on the wrong thread last night. What are the specs on that bad boy?
It's a 5C74HF-B

Gorgeous rod!
Couple crappy pics of the first coat. Don't panic, the first coat always looks this bad! a few bumps sticking out of the thread here and there......a few threads showing through the finish. It's all good!
I'm telling on you S Hovanec, posting porn is clearly illegal on these forums.
Am I allowed to say I have a stiffy?

That was fast!
Very sharp.
Better??
Still crappy pics tho.
Looks pretty sweet to me.
Outstanding, as usual for you. Still looking forward to seeing that handle.

Once I get the butt cap glued on.
Nice finish coating!
Just applied the decal and and coated it. Barring any gnat or dust bunny attacks in the next 4 hours, it'll be almost ready to go. Just need to glue up the butt cap tomorrow and take some good pics with the reel attached.
I'm always relieved when when the decal turns out flawless. That is the hardest area to keep clean working in a basement with a lathe nearby and 3 dogs running about!
Sweet. Looks like you built it for some guy named Dwight. Couldn't read the last name. Lucky fellow.
Well, this is it!
Can't wait to see it in person.
Very nice. That grip will be hard to top.

All packed up in the truck.
Don't forget the reel & cover, sir.

Those are in the truck too, in the pouch on the back of the seat.
Beautiful build! Congrats Dwight, that will be a sweet stick.
Wow, very cool rod. Beauty!
After doing this inlay twice, it has become my favorite pattern. I have plans to do a couple in EVA shortly.
Delivery made! I think he's happy with it. Hope to have a hero shot soon!
Nice work again, Scott. It is inspiring.
And at least that Dwight dude has reels with the handle on the correct side.

Funny you say that. After I wrapped it spiral right I was smacking myself about needing to rewrap the first 3 guides. Then i looked at the reel again and felt relieved. All of mine are left retrieve.....that's the 'right' side to me!
Well guys anyone considering a custom built rod should talk to Scott. I asked him to use his own desecration on the reel handle design. My only input was that I like burled cork so that handle looked different than a plain cork factory build. Boy did he ever come up with a one of a kind handle design. The blank I chose because I had a St Croix legend elite previously & like the heavy power blank for fishing in Florida with straight baid in the vegetation. I new what guides I wanted but Scott fine tuned my selection to best serve the straight braid in dirty water. His guide placement for sprial wrapping was very well thought out. The fit & finish is flawless. The rod balances perfect right under the reel foot. The guide wraps blend perfectly with the reel & blank. I'm a happy man. Thanks Scott.
I would like to thank Dwight for being so patient through the process. The missed deadlines on the blank shipment, the reel seat not fitting and the pure laziness of me when I didn't feel like building. I don't like to build when I'm not feeling the Mojo cause what I end up putting out is crap. I went in to a funk in 2012 and didn't put out much between then and this past spring. I think it took getting a new piece of equipment to work with to get me back in the swing. I think I'm back!!
Seeing the positive feedback on what a cool build this was should inspire and help keep that mojo flowing. Looks awesome. Cant wait to see whats next.
I hope these posts inspire and push other builders to improve their skills. It's not rocket science, it just takes some practice!
Some builders are secretive about techniques to build things. I'll tell you how I did it and show pics along the way.
I don't know how I missed this whole thread until now. Excellent work, Scott (as always).
Dwight, I can't wait to see you holding a 10lb+ Bass in your right hand with that rod in your left.

I can't either. Maybe a 10' 5wt. with an extended fighting butt and an inlayed letter "S" in the cork handle? That would be awesome!
Hey Dwight -- let's not drop this in the drink, mmmkay?

I offer a protection plan against that. It's only $499.99 to cover the rod against any and all accidents. Coverage for the reel not included!

You should ship all your rods with a courtesy salvage diver.
I might have to tie a rope to it & the boat. The last one was stolen by a fish not dropped in the drink.

This wouldn't be the most tragic man overboard instance in if Scotts rods has ever had. I'm pretty sure I know the guy that honor goes to.

You wouldn't be referring to a certain SCV/Stella incident that took place 4 miles off shore in 50' of water?
In case anyone is curious, Stellas don't float, but they don't sink like stones either!
My salvage diver recommendation is sounding better and better as this post goes on...

Burn out is something we have to be careful to avoid. It can be stressful to be creative all the time. The attention to detail can be hard to maintain when your mind wanders even s little. Welcome back even though I think you were with us all along.
Scott don't be too hard on yourself. You best my deadline by three weeks & StCroix threw us a big curve with the delayed blank delivery because of production delays.

I first met you in April of 2012 and you have done 11 projects for me since then. Everyone turned out better than I could have anticipated, so if you have been in a funk since I met you, I shutter to think what a Scott Project Rod looks like when you are not in a funk!

It wasn't the quality of work that was lacking, it was my motivation. Remember how long it took for the Sage One? I had no desire to build rods. I'm not even gonna tell you how long BasserJim has been waiting for his tube rod and I have had his Presso casting reel for 2 or so years to get a CTS DS rod built for it.

Your posts and a couple of the other guys here are what got me pretty much rebuilding my shop to get better at this. I've only ever done jigs and powder coating for years till I decided to buy a rod kit earlier this year. Now I've about got myself setup to do about everything. I have to admit its pretty cool to build a spinnerbait rod then fire up the lead pot and make a bunch of spinnerbaits to throw with that rod lol.

That would be the very one. First day I had it out too wasn't it?
