Going to have a custom rod built. I am wanting some suggestions for places to look at for sourcing components. I am envisioning a black and gold themed rod with carbon and foam used in the build. Have never had a rod built from the ground up so I would appreciate any feedback on the component websites. I have looked a bit on Mudhole but I assume there are plenty more.
Thanks for the input!
mudhole , getbit, acidrod , and other places pretty much have the same stuff . if you truly want different stuff , you're gonna have to research other custom rods to find things you want to incorperate into your build . as for carbon grips , check out RileyRods ...
The builder you choose should be your best resource for such advice. I'd be happy to work with you if you haven't chosen yet.
Matagi has very nice components.

They do but unless things have changed, they aren't super easy to source.

I gotcha. I've never looked into sourcing any. I just always see Matt 'otterrods' post pics of his builds on TT and he uses their stuff. I like the balancer end cap.

Yeah, their stuff is awesome. There used to be a US company that imported Matagi but Mudhole bought them out and stopped bringing it in. It is definitely still obtainable but it takes some effort.

That was Merrick Tackle that had the contract with them as the exclusive US distributor. They were once a great company to deal with, but when Mudhole bought them, they basically killed the entire business off. Look at Batson's website for components. They have lots of stuff that doesn't get listed by their distributors. GetBit carries their stuff and can source anything on Batson's site.
Thanks for the replies so far. Mike I have a custom builder right now lined up but thanks for the offer.
Seems like the one piece I am having the hardest time finding is a gloss black reel seat with some blank access under it. Something like you would find on the MB Orichi XX rods.
Also what is the general consensus on jig/worm blanks around $100 and also those around $175. Looking for something that is black or dark grey in color, around 7 foot to 7"4 and preferably something that would be rated for 3/8 to 1 oz to possibly 1 1/2 oz baits. Looking hard at the Phenix Ultra MBX 7"3 Heavy Blank, Several Baston Blanks, a few of the Point Blank blanks.
Top shelf would be the NFC blanks from Gary Loomis new sight.

Yea, I know that and K2 are up there with the best. I am just looking for something in the price ranges I noted above.

Look to Batson for the RainShadow Immortal: http://www.rainshadowrodblanks.com/product-line/immortal-bass-casting/

the Phenix 7' H & the 7'3' XH blanks are sweet jig blanks , light, nice tip with a good backbone !!
Among the top blanks there is no head and shoulders winner in performance or quality but in some cases cost. It comes down to subtle differences in action and power which can only be appreciated or distinguished by fishing them. Rainshadow, MHX and Rodgeeks are all hard to beat performance or price wise.

For the Gloss Real Seat, you could paint a graphite reel seat with a clear gloss paint which should give you the glossy look. Shouldn’t change the specs of the seat.
The hard part would be dripping/runs, but if you were able to fit it on an old/broken blank, put it on wrapper and paint while turning and turn until it is dry. That should take care of any streaks.
Then you could put a custom hood on it, some examples can be found here:

Thanks for the replies I think I have found the black gloss reel seat stateside without going through Japan. Also I have found the blank I want to use. Messed around on the Matagi Japan website for a few hours and found what I need but have no idea how to order. I ended up more confused then when I started. I may just request a catalog in English if they have one for the future.
Well it it looks like the painted reel seat I found may not work with the other parts I want. Really starting to hate custom rods...
don't know if you like Fuji SK2 split reel seats but Mudhole has a gloss black painted version , they list it as gunmetal ....
I did see that and currently have a K2 built on one in that same color. I am looking at this one from Matagi.
all that is is a painted Fuji ECS , why don't you find an airbrush person to replicate it , be about the same price ....
I may have one lined up to paint as a plan B or C. I am very picky about the looks of this rod build and am looking for something particular. It should work out but like all good things it will take some time. I just wish their was a Matagi shop stateside with an all English catalog or website.

johnnyspond.com , don't know if it's still in business

Thanks, there is another option if they can still get the parts.
All parts needed have been ordered through Matagi, including the gloss painted reel seat. Thanks all!
Rod Geeks are now painting Fuji DPSM and ECSM reel seats in any of their custom colors.

Have you used these on a build yet? Does the paint seem to hold up during the build process (reaming) and when mounting and removing a reel? Any idea on costs for these?
I have not, but the seats are painted with the same baked automotive paint that they use on the blanks.
The trigger seats are $28 painted.
