skipping 100 yds. + 2024

fishing user avatarjbmaine reply :

Skipping has never been my strong suit. Skipping docks, under trees, has been hit or miss for me.

Today we had a rare warm day, 50 + degrees, and I was bored so I headed to a local pond to practice.

Turns out it is easier than I thought.

In no time at all I was skipping a jig I'd guess a good 100 yds. or better.

It took me a little while to zone in on the secret, but here it is

Smooth ice!

It seems the smoother the ice the longer the cast, who'd of thunk it.

Although in all fairness, after the first two or three skips it is more of a sliding technique.

Anyone know how thin the ice has to be for a bass to bust thru and take it?

Please forgive me...…… It's been a longgggg winter.

Ha!  And I was about to call BS!  LOL

100 yard is a lot of spool!

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

Got me ????

fishing user avatarLog Catcher reply :

I knew something was up when I saw the heading. I would have to cast at least three times to say I got 100 yards off the spool. Winter is just getting started. What kind of stories will he be telling by the time it is over?

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Yeah, it's hit early this year up here!

fishing user avatarFishDewd reply :

Haha, I was just about to say "And here I can't even cast 100 yards!" ????

fishing user avatarFairtax4me reply :

If I really wind up I think I can toss a 3/4 oz blade bait about 75, but even that takes a LOT of effort. The large majority of my casts are less than 25.

I have heard guys talk about they can cast further than 100 yards. Makes me wonder if they have ever stood on a football field and seen how far 100 yards actually is.

Trust me, bass fisherman do not have the market cornered when it comes to stretching the "facts". Just today at a LGS when I was buying some reloading components I over heard a guy stating " I really like those Horn-a-day plastic tip jobs, I can pop a woodchuck at 700 yards using iron sights with them." It's best to smile and be on your way when tales of extreme feats of distance start getting tossed around.

Hey, that skill just might come in handy some day...

Last winter I was shooting under-ice video. (Btw, the bass ain't comin' up!) Early in the season when the ice was thin, I'd break through the ice with the camera, mounted on a pole. Well, there's a point where the ice gets too thick. And I now know that point. Doh!

The mount broke and the GoPro skidded out across the ice, too far to reach with the pole. The ice began to cave as I tried to step out. I was about to do the belly crawl thing, still not sure the ice would hold me (the truck was right there to save me from hypothermia if needed).

But a buddy just happened to stop by -a die-hard regular- to fish the only opening in the ice remaining. Now that's die-hard. He cast a jerkbait and managed to get a treble into the 1/4" hole in GoPro mount. Only took him three tries. B)

@Troy85, that was funny. And... a little bit scary.

fishing user avatarHook2Jaw reply :

@Troy85, it's Troy87 here.  That is the best video I've seen in a while and that dude deserves all the followers.

You must not follow the Steelhead scene much. Most of those guys fish 9+ foot rods designed to cast clear across the Clearwater River. I have helped my friend who is a rod builder test his rods and we've exceeded 100 yards casting a 2 ounce weight in the schoolyard behind his place.

Euro carp fisherman are also known for casting weights/baits 150-200 yards.

Bass fishermen are also some of the best at judging wave height

But do you even shoot creedmoor.  I know a guy who owns one and he could shoot the wings off a hummingbird at 1k.  ;)

Long?!?!?! I’m just outside Boston MA and still have open water... I’m packing up and heading out to a little SMB pond this morning....

Sure won’t skip 100 yds, but if I’m lucky, catch a couple bass.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I can skip a whole yard & then pick backlashes for an hour!

fishing user avatarTennessee Boy reply :

And I aways said,  the only way you can't fish a jig is topwater.  I guess you proved me wrong on that.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Reminds me of the movie Tin Cup golf ball driving contest when Costner hit the ball down the paved road over 1000 yards, the surface matters, fairway vs roadway or ice vs water.

unfortunately I see deer every year that are wounded by guys like that.

they would be doing good to hit a deer's vitals at 50 yards.

It was sarcasm, people think that cartridge has some kind of magical powers.  There is ten pages of people ripping on the creedmore on accurateshooter.com

I know. I was stating a point , that a lot of hunters think the high speed cartridges make them great hunters.

Out to 200 yards, there is not much difference between my 308 and my brother in laws 6.5 creedmoor.

most people should not be shooting at deer past that distance anyway.

I have a 6.5 Creedmore, Shilen Select barrel on a LH Savage action.  Wonderful rifle that I have not even taken out of the safe in maybe maybe 3 years now, don’t think I have shot it in 5.  Once bass fishing took hold of me any intrest in shooting faded away fast.

As with may things knowledge of what something is really capable means a lot.  I am a life long fishermen so its always there.  I have had on and off relationship with guns.  My dad was huge into the shooting and reloading sports.  He passed a few months ago and now i have everything a person could ever want to shoot or reload with.  Memphis is not a great place for shooters if you dont own your own land.  I will be going to georgia here soon and there is a little 100 yard range that was free and always open when i lived there last.  Not great for long range but i have a ton of old military stuff to shoot off hand and practice with.  Might get into shooting hogs with a 45/70.  So used to shooting trail boss i dont know how i will feel about full power 3031 loads after the easy target shooting.

fishing user avatarhaggard reply :

First thing I thought was "you fished a local pond on Saturday and didn't ask me to go along?!"

You fooled me until I read "100 yards or better".

Almost fell for it hook, line and stinker! ????

When I saw the thread title my first thought was, "At my age and physical condition I couldn't skip a 100 yards without keeling over from a heart attack."
