Fishing some cranks yesterday. Which we know equals alot of casting. Any of you stretch before a long day of
casting ? Getting some shoulder pain. Any advice would be great. Thanks, Lee
And Im not getting old!!!!! Well maybe.
Cast more.

Take a hot shower afterwards and suck it up.
Maybe its my mechanics in the cast. Ive always whipped it because of fishing with a spinning reel for so long.

Yes, But I believe its more of the shoulder movement when loading up that MH action rod of mine. Plus ive been a mechanic my whole life so Im sure some can be related to work.
When you get older and fish less you will feel it in your shoulders and neck more. It's like hitting the gym after some time off.

Well ive really hit it hard this season. Well over 50 trips. And just started up with cranks due to the season up here.
Bigbill mentioned hitting the gym. Being in good shape makes things work better, especially as we get older. Many of the issues that limited my time on the water no longer do since I started hitting the gym a few years ago.

Ya, Im sure that would help.
My normal fishing season starts in the spring fishing every morning up at 3:30am for over three months straight till I get burned out. It's fish, eat, shower, sleep, repeat. Bed by 8pm.
When I became sick I stopped. Once your in the groove it's easy. But many of mornings I dragged myself out of bed at first.
Being retired it becomes an addiction every morning. Grab that first cup of coffee on the way with a doughnut or bagel.
I have not experienced this, maybe because I am young, fish most days, and always have been one who casts, casts, casts. Fish similar to KVD and Rick Clunn. Stretching couldn't hurt but I do not think it will relieve your pain. I think your best option to avoid any pain is to get a specific casting rod for cranks. This would help you out more than anything, if you do not already have a crank bait specific rod.

Yaknow Ive been wondering about possibly going with something with a faster action that would be a little easier because of my type of casting. Its a good point. Thanks
In some circles I'm considered an old man...well maybe in all circles.
Anyway, the only thing that hurts on me is my back after standing, and stepping up and down on the deck for 8 hrs.
If your shoulder hurts from casting all day my thought is that the angle of your arm on your downward stroke may be at an angle that is pulling your muscles in a way they're not designed to do.
After you heal, try casting with more of a 3/4 side arm, or an underarm flick type delivery. Most times if my reel is set right I can get more distance with those kinds of casts than an over the head bomb..
Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice Mike I will certainly try that. I guess alot of it could be some bad habits Ive picked up. Im really throwing hard with the cranks as Im trying to really cover some water. And its a hard over the shoulder whipping motion. Did alot of time with spinning reels as said before.
It's real easy to get more height than distance on an over the shoulder bomb. Especially if you're really throwing hard TRYING to get the distance instead of letting the rod and a properly set reel give you all it can give, which is all you're gonna get.
Good Luck

Ya gotta exercise the muscles ya gonna use!
I learned years ago to let my rod do the casting, it's way better at than me.
In my late 40's, 50's it never bothered me I was logging, riding dirt bikes with my son's. Fishing inbetween at night.
Muscles were never sore.I was a gorilla logging jumping up on stone walls run a 100cc saw for hours non stop. Endless energy.
I was doing great till 60yo hit. The decline started. Then 63yo hit the aches and pains, but at 65yo I'm going to return to fishing 24/7.
The physical pains and crashes on the bikes we go through in my 40/50's we shrugged off return in our 60's.

keep ur biceps and elbows close against your body. watch how KVD and other pro's do it.
Matt allen show's too much shoulder technique with swimbaits and how to properly do it. really the same thing with all lures but ur casting overhead

Stretching before and after a long day on the water will really reduce a lot of your soreness the next day in most cases.

When someone says they do CrossFit lololol
A crankbait rod that loads up is wonderful when you have to cast a lot
I like the quote. Some of us enjoy the process of exercise though and it is very rare anymore to find anyone who excels at "real sports" who doesn't pay attention to diet and exercise. Not only does exercise enable us to be better, it also enables us to last longer...whether that's defined by endurance or longevity. On 10/21/2015 at 11:30 AM, gobig said:"I am not trying to be the best at exercising, I play real sports."

Probably the only person here that will say this but I am a certified yoga teacher and certified yoga therapist. If you can start doing just these http://1yoga4all.com/surya-namaskar/sivananda-style-surya-namaskara
Most of your problems will likely go away from doing this for 15 minutes or so every morning and after long days on the water.
Rub some dirt on it
I'm looking at my 6th shoulder or arm surgery since 1999.
Exercise and stretch your upper arms and shoulders as much as you can. Shoulders deteriorate. Think about how much energy is leveraged against your shoulders during a hook set, or a fight.
Protect you arms and shoulders. When they're bad fishing can become a chore instead of fun.
stretching is always good..
Here is some stretching advice from Aaron Martens. I started using these on a daily basis and they seem to help.

The right rod can do a lot of the work for you. I don't own the correct rod, LOL! But I do use a M 6'6" that loads up pretty well before casting cranks and other medium-to-heavy treble baits. Standing helps, but I can't do it from my kayak.
Welcome to Oldsville, population you (and me). If I have to cast a BC combo with a heavy bait a lot for 3-4 hours, I'll usually feel it in my right shoulder at least the next day. If I have to stand a long time I feel it in my lower back that night.
Is this whats in my future?? ^ lol

Brilliant, wish you were closer.
I do this http://www.diamonddallaspage.com/ every day. I was a three sport athlete in my younger days, my significant other still runs 10+ miles a day and was a professional ballerina-it kicks our butts. At 38, flexibility is much more important to me than strength. The spinal alignment that takes place with Yoga is like a daily trip to the chiropractor! There's nothing like Yoga, at 38, I am never sore anymore, where at 30 it took me half and hour to really get out of bed.
check out every cast KVD makes in this vid. his elbows are always touching his torso.
whenever i get a sore shoulder it's b/c i'm casting with my elbow as high as my shoulder

Take a couple Ibuprofen an hour before you start casting.. Get rods that will do most the work for you. Visit a chiropractor twice a month. You'll be good to go.
