For some unknown reason my wife decided to count my rods yesterday. She came up with 34. Good thing she didn't ask how many are in the boat or open up a travel tube..........And here I am perusing new rods on the internet..........
now that's not nice. do you go around counting her shoes...candle stick holders..number of soup ladles crammed in the kitchen drawer?
I have less than 15 and my wife rolls her eyes. She also rolls her eyes when I get Tackle Warehouse orders in the middle of winter. I'm still 2-3 months away from the thaw.
LOL

This couldn't be truer. I think that my closet has about 40 handbags in it. 2 or 3 of which get used. I have around 10 rods and growing and I get the same look.
See my problem is I not only like this expensive sport but I am heavy into archery, owning multiple bows, treestands and camo patterns, shotguns.... fly fishing
I hope she never sells this stuff for what she was told it cost.
Gentalmen, the thing to remember is that you have to find that magical acceptable number. It might be $50 it might be $5000 depending on your wife. What you purchase shall never exceed said price.
Honey... that ranger boat looks awefully expensive. "it just looks that way, I only paid five g for it"
Well, if you have to explain it to her, put in terms she understands oh so well...
It's just llike the purse and shoes you NEED to go with that new outfit.
I know you already have 200 pair(s), but you still NEED exactly the right
accessories. Another tennis braclet with brighter diamonds would be nice,
too!

very nice. does your wife even bother arguing with you anymore?
I'll probably be turning my man card in on this one, but 34 rods, Yikes!!
When my Fiance shakes her head, I just smile and say I love you. Shes bought 3 of mine. I make good money, but she makes 7 times what I do a month. I got some dishes I need to clean
My wife is pretty good about it. She gets a cell phone upgrade at least once a year, drives a nice car and buys bags, shoes, and expensive ipad and iphone covers. I work two jobs and odd jobs so that we can live comfortably. She understands the sacrifices i have made over the years and doesnt give me too much crap when i buy something... (except for December when i spent well over 850 bucks and didnt tell her and didnt buy her anyything) my wife has an avid pearl that i bought for her, but whens not on the boat that rod gets used!!
......and here I thought I was doing well with selling half of my gear and maintaining only 11 rods total (2 dedicated saltwater, 2 ultralights, 2 for my son and 5 for my bassin and trout/redfish slayin').......
....oh yeah, and the one I forgot, the $850 Orvis Hydros fly rod combo that hides in the corner out of sight.......
I have about 5 or 6 rods that I ever use. 2 or 3 more that I "might use" for special purposes, at some point. Wouldn't bother me to put the other 5 or 6 out for a garage sale, and I really don't need any new ones.

I'd make a loving grandfather. Think she would buy a few for me as well?
EDIT: I'll dry!

I'll hit her up!
Yeah, my wife was the same way. Had over 15, and now down to 8 Shimanos only. I guess she is happier that the maint cost is down, but I still get the head shake.
Your wife is a shakey head? So is mine! She also gets crankbait sometimes but I always seem to worm my way out of it after I finess the situation. I just don't get her sometimes.
I have a wife that doesn't mind. I get to spend a reasonable amount on tackle and gear every year. I just had to tell her when you need a flat head screwdriver for the job you don't go grab a phillips head. The light bulb went off. I'm a lucky guy!
I don't ask permission or try to justify what I spend my money on. Maybe thats why Im not married.
My wife buys al my more expensive gear. The local tackle store owner starts doing back flips and hand stands when she walks in with me. Last year I wanted to buy a curado 50e. The store was out of stock so she bought me a Core 50. We have always spend more money on the other one and must be doing something right as we have been married for 20 years last month. (My gift was a Cumara/ Chronarch combo while I added to her collection of jewelry.)
I've decided if the rod doesn't cost $125 it doesn't count in the total
I've got way more than I need, I try to use everything just to make sure my gear is in top notch condition. I don't need a darn thing, that doesn't mean I don't want something from time to time. If I get the whim I buy it, I don't spend my waking hours dreaming about new gear or cruising the net for deals. Fortunately I do not have to justify anything to my wife or myself. My wife is my main squeeze, if she wants a 100 pairs of shoes, let her have them. All I ever did was make money, she raised the kids and took care of the home, a much harder job. I'd go without if I had to just so she can have whatever she wants.

Thats good!
My wife may have more money in all the purses she has in the top of her closet than I do in rods and reels. Seems like she comes home with a new one once a month. I don't understand it but I don't bug her about that and she doesn't say anything about the dozens of fishing rods hanging in the garage and laying in the boat.
No overtime, no stuff.
You guy think you have it rough? My mom thinks my POS ugly stik spinning combo 3.6:1 gear ratio and my berkley lighting rod with a daiwa takara is enough! She wouldn't let me buy more than 5 combos, and she restricts my tackle to what I can fit in a backpack!
I feel bad for you guys. For christmas mine bought me a nice wall rack for mine, and it had a few empty spaces, so she asked when we were going shopping to fill the empty spots. I usually get her one every 3 I get, so she doesnt mind. And pink if possible. That makes it better lol.
its all good, i take mine out for a weekend trip and find some way to stop by cabelas or bps on the way home. butter her up all weekend,,, get something sweet on the way home. good thing she doesnt look, i think im past 30 rods, have every one since i started 25 years ago. you know its bad when you have boxes that havnt even been poen yet. lol
I just hide them in the basement. What rod, honey? That ole thing's been there for years.

Your Momma is probably right.
My fiance said one time to me that "you have enough gear to last a lifetime." I simply and politely said "that may be true but.........."
The discussion was somewhat short, congenial, and saved for another time. It was a couple of weeks later and we went fishing. I made sure she had everything she needed, bug spray, a book, her own equipment,(which she's prideful that she has "her" equipment) plenty of food and drink, and an evening filled with conversation.
The point being Is I was more than happy to Include her In this trip and hopefully many more to come. I know she was shocked(and happy) that we talked as much as we did, laughed as much as we did, and as Important she saw that for me It was more than just a hobby; from that point forward she has never questioned anything I have bought. She knows I will not overspend and I have never complained about any purchase she has made.
In the end this type of Interaction and open communication Is the norm and that will not change. I personally think Inclusion to varying degrees Is the benchmark to less hassle, happiness, and as much as anything a clear understanding of why we all do what we do.
my wife doesnt get mad at my spending. She just doesnt understand it. The only time i have ever had to explain myself was 3 months after we got married, i was backing a Ranger down the driveway. I never told her about it beforehand. After that point, i think she gave up. I still get the, " do you really need a new rod and reel" comment. I know i have way to much stuff, but my name is Ryne, and im an tackleaholic.

Wives are wrong sometime, but your mom is NEVER wrong. Remember that. Yeah, they nag you and annoy you. But when you get older and move away, you will miss and appreciate everything your mom does for you. I think everyone here will agree on that,
I have ~29 (including saltwater) and I get no comments. She fusses about it being everywhere sometimes but thats as far as it goes, lol.
Not sure how I established this but if they are in her way or out she will not touch them. She will wait for me to get home and ask that I move them, even if just a couple feet. That means i won right?
My wife is pretty understanding, as long as the bills are paid, and I am not taking money out of our savings I am free to buy what ever I need, with my share of our disposable income.............which with two kids isn't what it used to be. The key word is "need", I imagine if I started collecting stuff just to have it, there would be some dissagreement. As it is now I have 11 quality combos geared to specific techniques but with enough flexabilty that those combos can do other tasks (except maybe my deep cranking setup), that all get used (or will) on a regular basis, and I don't "need" to have 30 different rods. The only thing I stock up on is hardbaits, soft plastics, and terminal tackle, but thats simply for the fact that I would rather not have to waste valuable fishing time during the season by having to travel to get it, as the nearest stores that stock stuff I use are often an hours drive. Or I don't want to run out of stuff when the bite is hot and be caught with my pants down waiting for an online order to come in. The stuff I actually use, and have faith in is pretty tame compaired to a lot of people, but I do have lots of it. Every year I add a few new to me things to try, some make it to the regular rotation, some don't, and the stuff that don't gets sold. The funny thing is the longer I have fished...........the less stuff I have.

We never win. Shes pry just plotting some brutal takeover.
I am an avid collector of soft plastics, eventually your wife will reach the point of shaking her head at you to shaking her clenched fist at you.lol

X2
LOL!!! I only have 3 bass rods and 2 ocean rods. But you should see my wife when I told her I got a Glock 19 a week after I got a PTR-91 :-)
Wow, you guys have a lot of rods! I have a total of 7 and am covered for all techniques i use. They mostly stay in my rod lockers. My flippin stik gets used the most.
