2008 member challenge ideas 2024

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

The member challenges on BR in the past were interesting and made for some good reading, but are there other type of challenges that might peak membership interest when cabin fever ends?  How about kicking around some ideas.

Here's mine:

A-Day-On-The-Lake/River with ______________ and ______________.   A challenge where two BassResource members fish together at a lake/river that neither has ever fished before.  Fishing from either a boat or bank is allowed.  Chronicle and report decisions and results on the first 4 hours only of the trip, and pics are required.  Any format allowed as long as it's agreed upon by the two anglers in advance, and one angler makes fishing location choices for 2 hours and the other makes choices for 2 hours.  Winner of each challenge is the total weight of best 5 bass (or less) utilizing any of the following: 1. A hand held weight scale;  2. Length and Girth using the BassResource fishcalculator (see link below); 3. A length only conversion table (see link below below).

No money, just BR bragging rights, in order to keep the challenge light and fun.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

I think this is a great idea.

I would still like to keep the members challenge though.  That was created to have members challenge other members to techniques they are not proficient in, creating versatility.  It was very successful and has been a lot of fun over the last 2 seasons, I'd like to see it continue for the new members that never got to play.

This would need to be something different but lets roll it around here for a bit and fine tune it.

How about this.  Game is called "Catch or Fetch"

-Agree on lake

-Agree on time limit (4 hrs, 5 hrs, etc)

-If in a boat, drivers seat time is split 50/50.  Toss coin to see who leads first.

-Strictly for single largest fish

-NO live bait

-Photos are a must

-If not fishing in the same boat, or from shore, you have to be within sight and earshot of each other at all times.  Opponent has to "OK" the fish and it's weight or measurement before releasing or it doesn't count.  Travel for the "approval" rests in the lap of the person who has the fish.  He must bring it to the other angler for approval if too far away for a "thumbs up"

-Must agree on a "fetch" prize.  Either a "I'll clean your truck, you clean mine" scenario or  whatever but there has to be a prize.  Even if it's the lunch tab.  (no cash bets please)  GET CREATIVE HERE

Pics of the loser "paying up" are highly requested. (again, be vreative ;) )

All threads will have the below title format so members know it's a member tourny.

i.e. "Catch or Fetch- Tin vs LBH"

"Report backs" will be in posted in "My tournament or outing"

**First sign of NON sportsmanship-like behavior will end the game.

Remember, When a man truly congratulates his opponent, in the face of defeat, there are 2 winners ;)  Let's have a lot of fun with this.

Thoughts?

fishing user avatarPeter E. reply :

Sounds to me like a fantastic plan, if the challenge were to involve tubes, kayaks and wading I beleive that the rules should apply the same as bank fishing described by LBH. Another thing might be that the water should be new or relatively new water for both anglers if possible.

I have to say though that it sounds like a blast and I'd love to get in on it.

Peter

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

In some areas, the available fishing waters are relatively rare. This is the case where I live. In order to fish "new" water, I will have to travel some distance. I wonder if, as long as both members agree there's no unfair advantage, if they could compete in water fished before, probably by both of them? Just a thought.

Ronnie

fishing user avatarPeter E. reply :

Well you have a point Alpster, I suppose that if no one has a clear advantage and both parties accepth then you'd be good to go. Me down here I just moved down here so all the water is new water. Exact opposite for me.

fishing user avatarFivePoundBluegill reply :

GREAT IDEA

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Alpster, Sounds fine to me since you're new water challenged LOL.  Mine was only one suggestion, and it was more of an angler versus the lake, rather than angler versus angler type of thing.  The challenge I described was seeing how each angler makes choices about a lake they know nothing about.  And then seeing the results of their decisions.

But what I'm really impressed about is you having little new water to fish.  New Jersey is not that big, and you live in the center of the state.  I estimate NJ has almost 350 bass lakes.  Man I've got to pick your brain when I head into Jersey.  (just funnin with ya).  ;)

Zel,

I have to qualify my statement a little. I am very familiar with that list of NJ lakes. I have such Rheumatiod arthritis that I cannot walk the banks of any of those lakes. Of the 300+ lakes on the list, less than 70 have boat ramps at all and many of those so called ramps are inaccessible to me. If you actually go to most of those lakes on that list you will find they are storm water retention ponds that get drained regularly or they are so polluted that the fishing is nearly nill. If you look at the tournament schedule for all the Bass clubs in the state, you will find they all spend their tournament time in only 1/2 dozen of the lakes on that list. NJ has some world class salt water fishing, but is near the bottom of the list for freshwater fishing. I'm not complaining, just realistic.

Ronnie

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Alpster, I was only having a little fun at your expense. Now I feel lower than a snakes belly in a wagon wheel rut.  I've got arthritis in my neck, shoulder, back, spine, and just about every joint but at least it's not Rheumatiod arthritis.  Your pain has got to be 100 times worse.  Have you heard about that new medicine that is supposed to do wonders, but is available only in Europe, as it isn't approved yet in the US by the FDA?  My mother found out about it from a recent doctor's visit for Rheumatiod arthritis.

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

Zel,

No need to apologize, or feel bad. Never dreamed you would think of offending me. Have all the fun you can on me, that's what I'm here for. LOL Oh, and BTW, picking my brain will take less time than picking your nose.

Haven't heard of any new drugs for RA. I take Methotrexate (pills) and Humira injections twice a month. Going to get new knees this year. Would rather have a new rod. LOL

I really want to get up to PA and fish a day with you & Muddy when the weather breaks.

Great idea, but I'm not cleaning your car.... ;D ;D ;D

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

Anybody up for coming to Akron,Ohio late March early April on foot miles of great largemouth action. Here is the challenge one rod, one pocket of lures I will let you know what to bring lure wise and use the same type lures. Biggest fish, most fish whatever, we would never be more than 40 yards apart. Besides if that action in not on I live 10 minutes from the portage lakes we could hop in the boat for lake action. I really don't think that would be nessasary though.

OK Matt so if I challange you, and beat you, CAN I DRIVE THE BIG BROWN TRUCK

LMAO, you might wanna let me win! She's got over 300,000 miles on her, no power steering, wheel shakes pretty bad at 60mph, and minimal heat in the winter..... ;D ;D ;D Other than that, it's just like driving a Continental  ;)

fishing user avatarFish Man reply :

not trying to hijack the thread but another idea might be to have a regional "competition" to see who can catch the biggest bass in each area.no prizes or anything just bragging rights , and it could be divided up like the regional forums are so that there is a section for the south, northeast, west, midwest,, etc.....just an idea  :)

fishing user avatarKorea_Bassin reply :

It all sounds good to me.  I'm ready.  Who's coming to Korea this year?

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I'm open to any reasonable challenge but I want to challenge myself.

Florida is not considered jig country....For some reasons the typical Florida basser uses pegged soft plastics and not jigs.

I like jigs.......Jig fishing is way fun and requires a good bit of practice to master.

There is a member of the forum who is pouring some jigs that I will be using.

I challenge myself to catch a 5 lb or better on one of these jigs.

fishing user avataralger319 reply :

this sounds really cool, whichever format and a great why to meet new people- i just like competition( with myself, the lake, or someone else) i'm in central Florida but can't travel too far due to school :-/

That's already been happening.  There have been several get togethers on this forum within the regions listed.  Most have been just for fun tourneys.  The Missouri event last year had everyone chip in a lure as the first place prize.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

One other suggestion I have is to turn the challenge into a lure of the month challenge.  For example, everyone is challenged in March to catch a fish on a jerkbait, April a crankbait, May a spinnerbait and so on.  The lure chosen should be season specific so those attempting to use lures they haven't in the past or don't have a lot of confidence in, will be a lure or technique that could provide the anglers best chance at scoring a fish and thus, becoming confident in that bait.   In other words, I wouldn't choose jigging spoons in April when the fish are normally up shallow.  It forces everyone who wants to participate the opportunity to learn a new lure or technique.

Read the thread dude, lol.  This isn't the members challenge :)

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I'll throw this out there and see what y'all think ;)

On-line Paper Tournament

1. Moderators set time frame

2. 5 bass limit & all bass must be released

3. Individual Big Bass

4. Photos of you measuring the length & girth of each bass

5. Weights will be determined by Bass Resource weight calculator

6. All 5 bass must be caught on the same day

7. You can enter as many times as you want

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey Ronnie: This should definitely be done, on bodies of water , neither have fished on. Except for LBH and his crew, since RI is too small and a puddle there counts as an impoundment!

But what a great way to get out and meet with members face to face. Our gettogether of the fellas from PA, at Cabelas was a great time. Good Idea Ronnie!

I like this idea!!!!    Maybe do this with another forum member at the same time.

2008 members challenge ideas, and some good ones coming.

I bet some one will take alittle from all the suggestions thus far and tweek some of the new ideas coming in a put together an interesting new year.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I really like Zel's original thought of guys fishing together, sharing some time together. Also Matt, I do not get as deep into it as you do, and many do and many don't, why would a guy who fishes casually want to go up against a tourny guy. Actually talking about this makes me realize I need not put input here, because i do not get into competitions, I will stick to just calling fellas up, close to me and Say " Wanna go fishin?"  I am out of this groove so i withdraw my suggestions, because on second thought i have never fished competetively and do not want to start now

I like your idea Catt, as long as I get to weigh 5 PA bass for every one of your Toledo Rod Benders ;)

(You'd still win  LOL)

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I think Zel's idea is great.

I think Redline Robert should send me airfare to California immediatley so we can git er done.

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Alpster, Thanks!  I'm fighting off a left knee replacement myself.  I fractured the whole thing and need to be on crutches for 3 months, in order to give it enough time to heal.  At 6 weeks the surgeon said it still was iffy whether I would need a replacement.  4 more weeks to go and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I look forward to getting the chance to fish together with you and Muddy this season.  Have either of you ever fished Sholola Lake in Pike County PA?  I've heard a lot of good things about it, and have been given some tips from friends, but have never fished it myself.  It has little to no tournament pressure due to the severe requirements for holding tournaments.  And it produces some real quality fish.  I have an 18.5 ft Fish'n'Ski, and 3 anglers can comfortably fish out of it.  Any interest guys?

Info:

Shohola Lake - limited to electric motors only. This 1000+ acre impoundment is shallow, stumpy, and weedy. The result is superb largemouth fishing with many fish in the 5 pound range caught each year. Dense brush with very shallow water near shore compounded with a mucky bottom that prevents wading, limits shore fishing to the three boat launch areas and the picnic grove. Boat fishing is the way to go.

Muddy, this is merely documenting the Buddy to buddy competition we all feel when are "just fishin'"

All it is is next time you go with Ron, make a small bet on Biggest fish.  report the day back in "Outings" No big deal.  It's more FUN than COMPETITION

It's not like "Joe Tournament" is going to ppost up....."I'm coming to PA and I challenge MUDDY MAN",...no,.....just friends having fun but documenting it.  The bet can be as simple as "You load the car" at the end of the trip.  "Rinse and wipe down the opponents gear", something like that.

Think about it, Zel calls, says he wants go out saturday morning, do a "catch or fetch", the loser buys breakfast after.  It's a WIN/WIN with a little Honor and fun thrown in. ;)

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey Russ: I ain't tweaking on this, just backing out. I never have bet on biggest fish, never will. The way for me to avoid making my enjoyment time tense , is to really stay away from anything that stresses me. I can't do or like everything my friends come up with, nor they with me. I am offering if several fellas want to get together this way, while you are out doing your thing, you can get a homecooked meal, campside from me> 8-)

In a word.....NO LOL ;)

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

With the On-line Paper Tournament guys who go more often have a better chance of winning than guys on big bass lakes. It could even be a team format where 2 anglers combine the weight of their 5 largest bass as long as they fish together on the same day. I've done this when I was assistant moderator on another site and the casual angler won more often than the tournament anglers. There's no pressure to it you simply document your catch and report it here like you would on the my fishing outing page.

I understand the DMZ is lovely in springtime.

The blossoming of the land mine detonations, The gentle tinkle tinkle of razor ribbon blowing in the evening breeze,

the serenity of knowing that 1,000,000 potential fishing buddies are just accross no mans land wistfully oiling their AK 47's.

sigh........ :-/
