Mine used to be topwater, specifically a buzzbait. Obviously I still love it, but I've just re-fallen in love with that awesome feeling where I'm fishing a soft plastic, and I feel that "tick, tick" on my line. My heart gets pumping automatically and I love it. Then I get that amazing couple seconds, where I'm just waiting for my line to start moving, AND IT DOES! Now I know she's mine. All I have to do is set that hook! And how much FUN is it to set that hook?!?! I mean come ON! It's one of the single greatest feelings in all of sports for goodness sake!
I LOVE the different events that happen on a great soft plastic strike. The heart races, the anticipation, the hook set, the fight. Weeeeeeeeeeee!
How about you guys? What kinda strike do you guys dream about at night? Has your opinion changed over the years like mine, or has your favorite strike always been YOU'RE FAVORITE STRIKE?
TOP WATER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big bass slamming a jerkbait is my #1.
;D ;D ;D
A super hard strike on my plastics where my pole is about to fly out of my hands.
TOPWATER!!! heart skips a beat every time...
but.. i do know what you mean about the soft plastic...
the "tick, tick" and then the anticipation of the line movin'...
both are why it's ADDICTING...
i jig fish 80% of the time.....i love to fish laydowns ......i live for that thump at the end of my line..... and then it starts moving..... :o :D
Got to be TOP WATER!! Knowing that with every twitch that the water can explode, or, those kind where there's a big swirl and the lure just disappears. Plus, I think I catch bigger fish on top water.
It's kind of hard to beat a topwater strike...
I like RW also love a bass slamming a jerk bait...
I am also growing accustomed to the "tap tap *pause the bait* SLAM!!!" oh wait this isn't a bass its a walleye... darn it.
i love every type of strike for what it is...the explosion out of nowhere on the topwater, when a crankbait, rattletrap or spinner just stops dead, the mushy feeling that comes on a jig sometimes...but my favorite at the moment is the "tick, tick" and boom..set the hook...on the senko. absolutely love it.
Top water is one of my favorites. I have had a couple strikes in really shallow water on top water frogs where you could see the wake of the fish plowing through the water to inhale your frog. Nothing better than that!
Rage Shad/Buzzbait/Frog. Topwater
A good hard crankbait bite is hard to beat too.
I looove a good spinnerbait strike.
Jig bite.. one that you lift up to check your line and you feel weight.
Carolina rig bite.
Naturally topwater! Explosions are all good we know that, but the thing about it that turns me on is knowing that I did whatever I did to anger that fish. Subtle twitch, loud pop, burning the dog, pause, slow it down, speed it up,etc... I love taking advantage of the predator instinct and seeing and hearing the results of my efforts.
any bite for me, topwater, spinner bait, plastic, crank bait, just anything that gets a fish to hit whatever bait I have in the water starts my blood pressure up and makes me come ALIVE ! ! ! ! !
It's a toss up between topwater and a reaction strike underwater.
As I fish mostly at night, I rarely get to see that 'boil' in the water right before a topwater assault. I like that a lot !!
Top Water, but not the huge explosions. I LOVE watching the top water bait during the retrieval, then seeing a flash of bronze through the water, seeing the wake of the attack, and the dissapearance of a lure. Its just plain awesome. I LOVE seeing the fish hit it!
A close second is the instant you feel that tap tap on a worm. You can go all day not catching anything, but the second you feel that tap tap, your heart stops beating for a split second and you imagine whats hitting your lure, how big it could be, what kind of fight it will be, and a miriad of other thoughts go throw your mind until you see that line move and you know its go time.
so long story short: top water and the tap tap of a worm.
Fishing a jig and you think maybe that was a little tap, or maybe it wasn't, but you set the hook just in case and it's fish on!
That "Nothing" feeling you just get, and then the line moves off. Usually a very good fish.

I know that feeling. What would have been possibly an 8lb + fish for me picked up a tube so lightly I barely noticed it. Lost him during the fight when he jumped but that's another sob story :'(
A Topwater Explosion, especially close to the boat, really buries the needle on my Thrill Meter!
Roger
Its hard to beat a good topwater strike. The best ones could nearly cause a heart attack.
I also agree with CWB, "A good hard crankbait bite is hard to beat too".
QuoteBig bass slamming a jerkbait is my #1.;D ;D ;D
I can understand why people like a topwater bite, but I think anyone who has a 5 lb+ Smallmouth hit a jerkbait with the power that almost (and in some cases does, if you are not paying attention) rips the rod from your hands would put a jerkbait bite right up there (if not above) a topwater bite.
Its tough to beat a good topwater explosion but..
I agree with Bass_Akwards. I love a good plastic worm bite. Its not even so much the actual bite but its the hook set. I love getting ready and then realy stepping into a good hard hookset.

Roger
Especially when they come out of the water after it!
Topwater?
Maybe its topwater when i see a bass look like a torpedo after my topnocker. :
Spinnerbait?
While wearing my polarized glasses I can see the flash as they strike my spinnerbaits. :
Carolina Rig?
I rig up a Senko on a carolina rig and wait as it falls to see a nibble. :
Splitshot rig?
I'm a line watcher with a black worm tied on in the weeds. Pulling a 3lb + bass out of the weeds :
I like it all and more ;D
If you ain't fishing you should be 8-)

x3
When you stroke your big spoon and see the line tick, or when you feel like you are going through molasses on the upstroke. I also like a football jig strike of any kind.
TOPWATER bite for me.I love to see a bass blow up a buzzbait and make all kind of ruckus.
I love a strike on soft plastics, the "tick" tick", then your adrenilane starts pumping through your blood, and your brain is waiting for the electric impusle for when the line shoots out, and bammm!!! you set the hook!!! I recently started topwater and I got to say its exciting!
Any strike, with a good hook set, just can't beat it!!!
hands down....
TOPWATER!
...just cant beat it.
I love the top water bite but there's something about when you pitch a plastic or jig into a bush and feel that THUMP! set the hook and the bush just explodes and the bass is snagged up in there! It's like being in hand to hand combat with the bass! ;D
that first second when my crankbait rod loads up and every fish feels like he could pass for a 5 lber- only to be disappointed.
probably when workin a frog through slop & duckweed...seeing bass blow up out of it is pure sweetness...
or when i walk the dog with the 3.5" skitterpop...right pop-left pop...then during a second or 2 pause and WHAM!!...love it 8-)
Number 1 would be top-bait even though ive never had one blow up on it. Number 2 would be worm. I love the feeling when your line zips out and then the nice hard hook set. I had one the other day came about 1.5 feet out of the water after the worm as soon as the worm hit the water! First for me...I was like
I love them all, but what really lights my fire, is when one of those ill-tempered smallies pounds my crankbait.
Falcon
Of course I love the toilet bow flush of a big bass hitting my rage shad on top but my favorite is definitely when I'm burning a crankbait through a school of bass and I feel the hard "thud" when the bass hits my lure. The thud is so hard you can tell which direction the bass was coming from and then the feel of dead weight as almost like you're dragging a tree limb back before it starts fighting for real. I love that split second when the wobble is replaced with the feeling that your lure found a black hole or worm hole or some other type of star trekie hole!
QuoteI love that split second when the wobble is replaced with the feeling that your lure found a black hole or worm hole or some other type of star trekie hole!
Thats funny right there and a good way of puttting it into perspective.
Feeling that tug on a soft bait is unbeatable. Especially when it's a big one.
My favorite is when deadsticking at night when you goto lift you rod and can't feel anything so you crank like a mofo just for a chance to set the hook. They ALL feel huge!! Sometimes they are. I call it the smart bite!!
For right now I'd have to say a soft plastic bite. I love the anticipation when that line starts to twitch and starts moving out, than the hard hookset. I also really like when fish hit a fast moving crank, especially when they slam it.
top water explosion on a frog
nothing can beat frog fishing !!! specially when you have paused it and your eyes wander off the frog cause your checking the next possible location to cast to , then WHAM , you see and feel the explosion and force you self to hesitate for a second then set the hook and feel the monster pulling back ..... dang , i want to go throw some frogs !!!!
Awesome stuff guys! Doesn't reading all these posts make ya realize just how much fun catching a LMB really is?!
I read every post and put myself in your position, thinking about those little moments you all mentioned and was just chukling because I know the feeling. I'm so psyched to go fishing now and hook into a nice one I almost can't stand it.
All the posts from the frog tossers really got me amped to go huck a Kermit into the thick stuff and watch what happens. ::licking my chops::
Topwater. Been having really good fortune with a black jointed jitterbug. Fish in very early am (still dark), all you can hear is glub, glub, glub, WHOOSH. Very exciting.
I love to fish jigs.....nothing better than feeling that little tick and watching your line just take off! Or waking a spinnerbait just under the surface and seeing that giant wave come up right before the strike.....especially when that wave comes from the side because you just know they are going to kill it! Those two are my favorites, but they ALL get the blood pumping!
Topwater is still my favorite, but I am with bass akwards in that I love seeing my line shoot away when a fat bass inhales my soft plastic. Any bass strike rocks though.
I love whenever a big 'ol bass picks up a soft plastic and just starts to swim away. It adds to the element of surprise to me, the big girl doesn't even know whats about to happen to her.
QuoteIts tough to beat a good topwater explosion but..I agree with Bass_Akwards. I love a good plastic worm bite. Its not even so much the actual bite but its the hook set. I love getting ready and then realy stepping into a good hard hookset.
Amen. Reeling up the slack and stepping back as you lay it in is probably my favorite too. I also like when you're working a jig and you go to bump it off the bottom and the line is slack, and a piggy is swimming away with it
I've gained a new appreciation for soft lures. I've just started fishing them about a month ago. The feel of you picking it up, a little twitch, then tick tick tick line swimming off, then hook set.....
But I still love fising spinner baits right under the surface. Bettle spins either right under the surface or fishing it deep. Also buzz baits, seeing the wake, hearing the explosion, and feeling the weight of the fish then hook set.
I love any kind of fishing as long as I'm catching fish
My #1 favorite is the loud splash of a hawg bass slamming my Rage Toad! Closely following in second is that mushy feeling in my rod as a fish just barely picks up my T-Rig!
When they smash my topwater baits as I give them a little walking action. Especially when smallmouth do it. ahh so nice
One that almost pulls my rod in the water.
Topwater at all times, but especially at night. Yes, you don't get to see it, but it's just as sweet hearing it.
i LOVE seein' a big ol' bucketmouth slurp down a hornytoad!!!!
When dragging a worm or lizard across the top of the pads. Sometimes you can see the pads start to move a few feet from the bait and BAM!
I like to be sitting in a boat just before sun up with the fog rising off a glass smooth lake just reveling in the beauty of the setting with a popper sitting out there waiting for the rings to disappear when a bass slams out of the water to kill the popper and dang near scares me into jumping out of the boat. WOW!
Top Water
When your working a jig or a soft plastic along the bottom and one hits it so hard that it almost pulls the rod out of your hands.
My all time favorite type of strike, comes on a crankbait. The feeling you get when steadily cranking in the bait only to have it just STOP, You pull back to feel the powerful head shake.
Big girl coming up and inhaling a Johnson Silver Minnow skittered over and through grass on Santee!!
I love a top-water strike............no guess work involved.
Jitterbug is my all-time favorite top water lure, working it thru some lillypads or grass.........and the bass just kills it.
Steve
If I can land them after the strike and put them in the well, I love them all!!!!
No preference to lure......my favorite would be the last one I had.
Regardless of lure I love it when I set hook & the bass sets hook back
