according to a news story, bass fisherman Oscar Garza was murdered on Falcon Lake Tuesday night. His fishing partner is still under medical care for hypothermia suffered when he bailed from the bass boat to avoid a hail of bullets.
He is not the first American to be murdered on Falcon Lake. David Hartley was murdered by Los Zetas gang members in 2010 while jet skiing with his wife.
Please keep Mr. Garza's family and friends in your prayers.
Please be careful if you are on lakes that border Mexico. I am not aware of any similar situation on the U.S./Canadian border lakes.

Very sad story.
I used to fish any remote lake without a second thought.I usually had a gun anyway, but not due to worrying about danger from people. In the last 15 years I've always carried.Sad story, and sad that things have gotten this way.God bless their families.
Prayers from Cali.
Here's a similar story from San Antonio newspaper: http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/Man-killed-while-fishing-on-border-lake-10781308.php

If I thought I needed to carry a gun to go fishing, I'd never fish again.
Very sad, two guys just trying to enjoy the sport they love. Not worth the risk, hard to return fire from a boat even if your loaded.
Man that's horrible.. I'll sleep better at night knowing they'll get what they have coming to them. The story about the husband and wife on the jet ski. Dude.. it's like you can't do anything anymore. Makes me sick knowing I'm trying to teach a little girl how to live in this world..
very sad. at least they died doing what they loved.

I think the only " at least" to be said about this situation is that one lived.
I fished Falcon a few years ago for 5 days with a guide. I'll be honest with you, I thought about things like that the whole time. When we were waiting at the airport to fly back, I struck up some convo with a local female officer and told here why we were there. She literally said, "You fished Falcon!? And nothing happened to you?!" She told us of many other stories that could have ended really bad that never reach the public. One such story she told was a boat approached a guy in a bass boat and told him he had to board their boat, he was under investigation. This boat was lettered up and men were in official looking uniforms. Well the guy in the bass boat started to climb onto their boat when he noticed some misspelled words on their boat or uniforms. He shot back into his boat and took off; reported it and found there was no US boat in the area. They would have found his head if they found anything at all. Not sure I would go there again.
We owe to drug addicts and their providers such wonderful vacation spots.
Unfortunately the grip of drugs extends far beyond the border. There are certain spots here in Pennsylvania that I can't fish at late in the evening or night because of drug addicts and their night time activities. Its sad for that angler, his family and all the other fisherman who have lost their lives unnecessarily by being in the line of fire of a drug war.
Sounds like there needs to be some E&E at your PA boat ramps. Eviction and Eradication. We keep letting these damned drug dealers have their way and they no longer have any fear. Nothing but a bunch of useless animals. Flush them all.
West Virginia leads the Nation in prescription drug abuse and overdoses. It is so bad now the state legislature legalized open and concealed carry so citizens can protect themselves and their families.
I never step out of my truck without my gun and its in my hand when I walk from the dock to my truck after dark or before daylight.
The only time I carry is from the ramp to my boat and back. There are some shady characters at boat ramps.
Not bad around here. Plenty of other places to go. Big problem here is heroin users OD'ing while driving. They can't wait so they shot up while behind the wheel. Then our LEOs NarCan the a-holes so they can go right back to doing it again. Incredible!
Cocked, locked, & ready to rock!
Very little in the way of riff raff up here. Make no mistake there's crazies but from the sounds of some of the response above, it's a different deal here. Mostly some seasonal freaks that can't hang with the sub-zero temps (still hard to call that beneficial).
Most every outdoors person in this area is suitably equipped to address whatever situation that may arise "in the field".
Seems to encourage somewhat respectable behavior - between the humans at least.
Of perhaps more concern to me revolves around whether or not Yogi's Mom might be near the ramp - especially at night.
It's only happened once, and that was enough.

The .45 in the top picture isn't cocked or locked... just sayin... Might be important in case of an emergency...

Looks like you are properly protected. Just want to correct something you said in your post, though. That Colt 1911 in the holster is neither cocked nor locked. Is this the way you leave it in? Is there a round in the chamber?

Don't be silly or play ignorant please, since when Canada is a world leader in the production of crystal meth or pot or serves as the most important route for cocaine trafficking into the US ?
I just don't see why you'd kill a couple fisherman.. even if they thought it was "their turf" .. I'd be less shocked if it was authority of some sort..
But fisherman ? There's a special place in h.ell for people who do things like this.

Judging by the number of border patrol boats, trucks, and the constant presence on Lake Ontario, along with the various sheriff, Coast Guard, and other agency boats, I'd say there's a reason to be cautious.

Than why did you say "cocked and locked"? That's a common term for the readiness status of a 1911 style pistol.
Tangent airlines now departing!

Never said the guns were cocked, locked, & ready to rock!
The gun is just a tool, the soldier is the weapon!
Man, that hurts the fishing communities hearts! I pray for his family to make it through this horrible times. I hate that in some places you fear to go fishing. We shouldn't fear or have to be worried about something like this!! These past years hit a lot of us hard, with Keith poche's nephew being murdered, now to all these great guys being murdered! I pray for all the families! Everyone be safe, an I wanna thank all Police, Fire, Emt's, an expecially our GREAT military!
We need to understand that we as group have garnered the attention of a group of individuals who do not have our best interest at heart.
We see a Skeeter, Ranger, or BassCat at launch, they see a $100k plus opportunity!
Big one around here is while ya out fishing someone drills a hole in your fuel tank, not only do you have no fuel ya can't put in until ya stop the leak!
Even the local crack heads have learned your rod-n-reel combo is worth stealing!
Once again we need to be educated, informed (spread the word) & prepared!
If it aint come to your neighborhood yet hold on it is!
Very sad. You have to watch your back when you do anything these days, it's unfortunate what some people do.
That's ridiculous..Luckily haven't dealt with any issues while fishing..yet.
I deal with the occasional dummy who decides to fish right next to me, but nothing too serious.
Liberal NY doesn't allow me to carry, otherwise I would, never know anymore..
My prayers go out to their families
Another reason i hate living in the south west. The lake where i catch all my giant bass you have to bring a kevlar vest and helmet out there to fish because of all the idiots shooting or shooting at you or shooting at the water towards you to skip bullets. You should see two iraq vets out there when people start shooting I'm sure that is a sight to see. Wish i could go back to northern michigan already! Prayers for the families!

I wouldn't put myself in a position to die , especially over a fish. No fish is worth death..
Especially when you have a family of your own.

There are places worse than others.
One small small pond I fish with my kayak is located near a very sketchy area and the boat ramp constantly has cars pulling up and sitting and then leaving at ALL hours. One night I was about to go to ramp when a car pulled up at 1 am and sat there for 15 minutes.
Edited by J FranchoTime to completely eradicate this type of scum.
Unreal,Prayers to his family

Im glad this forum has no political talk rules. This forum would be a disaster without those rules.
Folks God has been run out of the United States , i'm glad to see so much about Pray on this site without us being band from this site. As John Hagee , A preacher out of Texas said , When God was run out of the class room , Guns came in . We don't even have the right to bow our head & pray , if you watch the news you know what i'm talking about . I love Fishing to its too bad we need to carry a gun , i got a 9 MM to & its loaded.

Let's not turn this into a political debate. It's verboten here, and this is definitely a political issue.
