Including tonight we will have had close to 40 hrs of subfreezing weather which should put beat down on the Gaint Salivina!!!
Hate that stuff!!!
That, and one more week, and it's half over.
The best thing about this winter? So far for me, "NOTHING"!!!!!

X2, and then some.
I went sledding for the first time in years, TWICE! It was fun, but unrelated to fishing.
I can think of only two good things about this, or any other winter.
1. I save about a hundred dollars per week on gasoline by not hauling the boat around to the various fishing holes. Fuel for the boat is minimal by comparison.
2. I get stuff done around the house which keeps my bride happy, and more importantly quiet during the fishing season.

Sorry bout this but I like the fact there are less anglers on the water by a long shot and I find the fishing great for the most part.
Just sayin!
Congratulations!

Everything is better!
In South Florida the relentless heat drops, the humidity drops, rains less, the water temps drop, the water levels drop, fish become concentrated is smaller areas, fish spawn, 200 fish days are a real possibility. I live for winter / spring!
I was having a good time on my snowmobile...until I broke a ski the other day. Almost wrecked lol

Kowing that each day brings me a little closer to SPRING!!
Ice out up north.
To be serious, the winter reminds me of how precious every moment I get to spend on the beautiful Minnesota lakes truly is. I vow to stop and smell the roses this summer. When I step into my boat and start up the Merc and run across the lake to throw some early morning poppers on my favorite lake point and see the LMB explode or when I pitch a frog into the lilies just to watch it disappear with a gulp from below, I will stop and thank the lord above for such a privilege.
IMHO, our fishing, as a whole, is much better up here because of the winter. We might not have as big of fish as Texas, Florida, etc.....but the numbers of 3-5lb fish is excellant. Plus we have smallmouth, and (while most bass guys hate them)....pike. I like them, except when they steal lures or bite my fingers off. Hook up with a big pike on bass gear and your in for a thrill, and there has been many a day when the bassin' was slow that the pike kept it fun and interesting.
I like the winter and i like the cold but cold is all relative My favorite thing is i go trout fishing more and it reminds me how much i like fly fishing even though i don't do it as much for largemouth as i should.
Best thing about winter.........living in Florida

The best thing about 'every' winter in Florida,
it constitutes the 'Pre-Spawn' season that ushers in the Hippos
Roger
Best thing about winter is... watching it on TV from California (saw that on a Facebook page lol) but seriously its been in the 60-70s here but we need rain soooo bad.
Doing all my bass classroom work and anticipating all the field work ill be doing soon. Lol

Paul Elias 2008 Falcon Lake
20 bass 132+ lbs
Google Paul Elias Record, awesome video, he was throwing back 6 1/2-7 lb bass cause they were too small. When he caught a hawg he called it Nadean!

Yes, and if I'm not mistaken the old boy retired after that event, only to throw his hat back in the ring.
This also takes us back to January 17, 2001 on Florida's West Tohopekaliga (affectionately known as 'Lake Toho").
Dean Rojas broke and still holds the all-time B.A.S.S one-day stringer record: 45-lb 2-oz
The frogmaster also set the 4-day stringer record on Toho weighing 108-lb 12-oz (Bested by Elias on Falcon)

I'm hoping this really cold and snowy winter will bring a normal spring and summer and fall later in the year.
Have to say that speeding up my Master's program and landing a ton of side-work is keeping me from thinking about not being able to fish right now. With any luck I'll make some time to ski too.
Luckily, for those late nights after the family's asleep and at the Firehouse, there's still Bassresource.com
best thing about this winter for me is i dont feel the need to buy anymore new gear or tackle. eventually i probably will end up with a few new lures, but i havent been actively looking for anything specific. normally around mid-february i will make a trip to BPS, so i will probably end up with a few things then provided i make the trip this year to Anne Arundel Mills BPS in Hanover, MD. Otherwise i got plenty of plastics and line to get me through the year, may get a few extra bags of plastics i use a lot but dont really need to.
also, the urge to go fishing hasnt really hit me yet, im sure it will soon enough though. i was thinking about it pretty good while laying around sick last week, but that has since passed...

Good point. I don't have a boat, but point 2 is spot on.
Saw that you guys up in the Northern states had a Polar vortex or something.... Being at 30 deg South on the Indian Ocean we have very mild weather in Winter. This allows us to fish all year round. I read the thread one member posted about ice fishing for perch, very interesting and something very foreign to us.
Hunting season is the only good thing about winter.
More snow and cold weather came in last night. Nuts.
cold weather is killin me. hasn't been much above 20 degrees at its warmest. ive resorted to pitching across my living room to the bucket we put our Christmas tree in. more snow is predicted in the coming days
Making enough baits to choke a horse. I just made a mold of the "unappealing otter" it's not ugly by any means. But it sure looks that way.
Whenever it ends...
Only good thing about winter is being able to have the time to clean your gear and perfect everything for next season. My boat has been gone through top to bottom.
Oh and every cold day means the bass will be that much hungrier come spring
Two more days of sleet, snow, & freezing rain!
Bye Bye Giant Salvinia!!!
Fly Fishing on a limestone trout stream in 25 degree air temperatures with snow falling all around you and no one else in sight is one of the true joys in all of fishing. I welcome winter every year (as well as Spring (Smallmouth), Summer (Musky), Fall (Smallmouth & Musky))
Ice fishing for walleye when it's not rediculously cold out here in WI. It's the only way I can make it through winter.
Best thing about this winter is my boy got a boat!!
