fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

Was announced by Newell last Friday...

fishing user avatarBassWhole! reply :

They are going to do the private equity two step with it. Because of the size and position of the company in the industry, and the major brands it owns, it's not going to be pretty.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

Johnny Morris can't buy these companies up either?

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Pure Fishing includes the following brands;

Abu Garcia

All Star

Berkley

Chub

Fenwick

Greys

Hardy

Hodgeman

Johnson

JRC

Mitchell

Penn

Plfueger

Sebile

Shakespeare

Spider Wire

Stren

If you use any of these products the sale of Pure Fishing will affect you.

Would you want BPS/Johnny Mooris to raise prices on products widely used?

Well I hope whoever buys them doesn't talk quality or jack prices. I happen to use a lot of Berkley line and I like Plunger reels as well.

I got one ugly stick, one pack of Trilene 100%, and one revo. Doesn’t really apply to me so much ????

Well, he already knocks off everything they make in some way.

fishing user avatarratherbfishin1 reply :

You have to be kidding me spiderwire and stren... those are the only two lines I use.  I guess I'll just have to stop fishing.????????

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

0% effect on me.  I can't think of a single product I use from any of those companies.  Not even PowerBait anymore.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

Ha, I was being facetious with the Johnny Morris comment, I hope he doesn't.  The way he bought and consolidated so many of the bass boat companies makes me think of him as Vince McMahon who decided the best way to be the only wrestling show in town was to just buy up all of the competing brands.

I do hope Pure Fishing goes to a better owner.  Last time they were sold which was just a few years back, I hear they got rid of pretty much all of their sales reps.

I only own some of the Abu/Berkley/Sebile stuff, and of those three Berkley is the only brand I buy heavily (for trout fishing it's PowerBait or bust, and I'm a big fan of their Havoc line).

fishing user avatarthinkingredneck reply :

Always some sort of buying and selling.  Only so many places to put money, I guess.Maybe Warren Buffet will buy it.

ABU GARCIA, ALL STAR, FENWICK, JOHNSON, MITCHELL, PLFUEGER, SHAKESPEARE, SPIDER WIRE, BERKLEY & STREN  AT ONE TIME...BOUGHT AND OWNED FROM RODS & REELS TO PLASTICS...

SOME MAY NOT SURVIVE...

That was going on before he did it though. During good economic times, people from established boat mfg's would branch out and start companies. If timing was bad, they'd eventually fold or get bought at a bargain by the big boys. If timing was good, they would prosper and often get bought up by the established companies at a decent profit to either be dissolved or maintained. I remember when I was a teen, OMC Group bought up several manufacturers and many disappeared. During economic downturns, only the big boys can afford to keep going and even buy up the competition.

fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

Baits and line companies would make a sensible acquisition for Northland Tackle or Rapala...

Berkley baits and Pfleuger reels are the only ones I'd miss here. And I doubt they'll simply disappear. I think Pfleuger's spinning reels are one of the best bargains on the market.

Who knows?...have to wait and see what the Big Boys do...own two Pfleuger Supreme baitcasters over 15 yrs. old... still use 'em from time to time...excellent reels...good fishing...

I walk through pawn shops all the time hoping for some little gem I can get a deal on. I ran across this one about a week ago, still sealed in the original package, at my local pawn shop. Note the price. $20. That's half the Cabela's, BPS and Academy price. It took me 47 years, but I finally scored a good pawn shop deal on a reel. I already had one in the 40 size, but this one is much lighter and balanced on the rod. And I just completely wore out an old BPS Viper reel.

A couple months ago fisherman's factory outlet had the President reels discounted already and offered buy one get one 50% off as well.  My brother-in-law and I bought two and split the total.  Cost us each $27.  I didn't even need one but couldn't pass up the price.  It's still in it's packing in my basement.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

I'm with francho, no effect this way, don't use any if those products.

Sucks for the guys who do, maybe it'll work out for the better.

Maybe Amazon will buy it. They buying everything else

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

No real effect on me that I can tell, either.

I do have Gulp baits for saltwater, but I have yet

to experience success with them that will make me

want to buy again...

And I did buy one of my boys a Pflueger President

spinning reel for Christmas, the previous model,

which I got at BPS for like $30 or $40...

So no real loss there, either.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I forgot about Gulp! products, but it's been a few years since I used any.  I doubt they'd phase them out anyway.  Too popular.

fishing user avatarLoochy88 reply :

I buy a log of Berkley Havoc plastics and Abu rods and reels.

In fact the local walmart just clearanced out their Vengeance MH baitcast rods @ 20 bucks and i bought out their entire inventory! (haha!)
