Most money lost during a single trip.... 2024

fishing user avatarBranuss04 reply :

I'm just curious as to what is the most money (In baits) you guys have lost in a single trip?  And also, about how much you guys loose during an average trip?

Me and 4bizz just got back from a trip where the fishing gods hated us.  What should have been a great trip (5 bites and 1 dumped 5-7#er within the first 30 minutes), ended with almost $300 worth of lost baits and one good fish.  It was absolutely horrible, we were loosing baits left and right.  We lost them anywhere from breaking them off on the cast, to breaking them off on a fish, to breaking the off on a hook set, to breaking them off on timber.  At one point, 4bizz even jumped in the lake (56 degrees) and dove down 9 feet to rip a stump out the the ground that had taken his bait (2 hours later he ended up loosing the same bait  ;D)  It was one of those trips where we shoulda stopped at noon and said "Lets cut our losses and go home and drink beer".  I think we lost around 5 swimbaits and at least a dozen jigs.  >:(.  It's time to go stockpile my swimbait collection again.  :'(

fishing user avatarSkilletSizeBass. reply :

I use a lure retriever to attempt to retrieve my lures, most of the time it works.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Going one day to a lake I happened to fall on a frigging canyon deep hole in the middle of the road while driving my mom 's CRV, wheel ---> kaput, tire ----> caput, all the right rear suspension ----> kaput. If I hadn 't insurance the cost would have been around $4,000, I paid "only" $400.

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Breaking off on casts and with fish on sounds like bad line.

fishing user avatarBranuss04 reply :

It was all brand new line.  I was using 20# P-Line CXX and 30# CXX.  I don't know what he was using.

We were using a bait knocker.  Up until this trip, the knocker recovered 100% of the lures I used it on.  This time it failed us twice.  That is why jay had to swim for a lure.

All in all, I think the fishing gods just hated us.  Oh well, you gotta pay to play right  ::)

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Sometimes you get them and sometimes they get you. You just had a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad day.

fishing user avatarrfunfarm reply :

I lost a little over $400.00 on the last trip to Bass Pro on baits. :o :o

fishing user avatarMuddy reply :

Mine happened over 2 trips a few weeks apart;

Trip One: I had a brand new Cabela's Prodigy/Fish EagleII combo, which I cat out for the first time with a jig on it. I put it down to get my depth finder right , a fish hit the jig>>>ROD AND REEL to the bottom of the lake 129.00

Trip Two, a couple of weeks later, same spot my friend Mark and I are on fish , he gets the birds nest from hell, so I let him use the twin brother to the rod in the lake. His hands were wet, long story made short That rod and reel to the bottom of the lake as it flew out of his hands

another 129.00 on the bottom of the lake >:(

fishing user avatarCJ reply :

Since you stated lures, I wont mention the lower unit deal.

I remember a day I lost over a dozen jigs and 3 LC crankbaits. I do loose a lot of money in lures annually. During tournaments if I hang up, I break it off and retie. I don't have time to try getting it loose. This year I have added some swimbaits to my collection and I expect I'll be loosing a few.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

I would be changing brands of line and purchasing a lure retriever. Get the one with the chains on it.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

We had a lure retriever. I would bet that Im better at knocking swimbaits loose with one than just about anyone.

Baits were broken off on 3 different brands of line. 25lb Big Game, 30lb Pline CXX, and 26lb Siglon Flourocarbon.

The Pline was spooled that morning, and the Sunline is about 3 weeks old on that reel.

Sometimes karma/fishing gods just take a dump on you.

fishing user avatarfishinfiend reply :

$300 in a day :o     You guys are high rollers.

The most I lost is $30. I lost a jackall giron and a spro frog. What ticks me off the most is I lost them before I caught a fish with either of them.  :'(

I knew I should have made the giron into a keychain.

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

I don't think I've lost more than 10 bucks worth of lures in a day.

fishing user avatarNitroMan reply :

I don't usually loose too much money in lures/poles or anything on any outing. The most I have ever lost was about $20.00 worth in lures, however this year already I have broken 3 poles all in seperate outings but they were junk anyway.

fishing user avatarcwen reply :

I alomst had a horrific loss. I a box of jerkbiats on top of my engine because my wife was talking to me. I left the house and got on the highway when it hit me because I saw the box still on the engine while driving 50 MPH plus. The box had easily 25-30 jerkbaits in it, and I only own lucky craft jerkbaits.

fishing user avatarSuskyDude reply :

Live had a few ice rod/reels get dragged in at 30$ a pop.

Thats the most I've lost at one time, I think.

I did lose a LC Pointer, on the first cast once. I vowed to never do that again. >:(

fishing user avatarprincecraft papa reply :

ok so we are not going to talk about loosing O/B motors!

my brother & I went out Musky fishing one day, I had just bought a hand crafted, custom painted mega lure. $58, so I was sitting there tying on & shooting the s@@t with my bro, checked my knot,,,, nice looking knot... threw the lure in the water.... picked up my pole.....that is when I realized....I had tied on to  a scap piece of line, I thuew a $58 lure overboard without ever even casting it!!!

well thats my dumba$$ story, hope you all have a great day.

X2 and that was tungsten weights that got hung up in the rocks on Ray Hubbard.

fishing user avatarTucson reply :

I don't count things like hooks or plastics but it galls me to lose a crank or spinnerbait.  Overall, I've recovered  more lures from brush then I've lost.  Last week I lost a Rapala Husky Jerk but I recovered someone else's Rapala jointed shad rap and two spinnerbaits with trailers.  It's especially good hunting on a Monday following a tournament!

When you fish tungsten you better count them. At todays price they are as pricy as some lures. Academy price for three 5/8 oz. is 6.12.

fishing user avatarbass wrangler569 reply :

about $50, lost three lucky craft jerkbaits. was using a pointer 128 in chartreuse shad and crushing bass but musky broke that off, moved down to a 100 in chartreuse shad, broke that off. Moved down to my final charteuse shad pointer, a size 78, lost that on a fish. I fished the rest of the day using pointers in different colors but I couldn't get a bite. Now I buy duplicates of everything. I can't fathom breaking off $300 worth of stuff in a day, I think I would have cried!

fishing user avatarilovefooffur reply :

I think the most I ever lost in baits is about $30 on a trip, but then again my most expensive bait is a $10 Terminatur Tungsten spinnerbait.

fishing user avatarbigfruits reply :

i lost two avids and a fenwick hmg with symetre reels in about 3 secs when my canoe flipped on some rapids. and my stash got wet!

fishing user avatarbassin_man reply :

A citica/crucial crankbait combo.

fishing user avatarnjnitrobasser reply :

my biggest losses have been cell phones.first one was hitting a stump and falling off the front of the boat.second was kicking a rod off the front deck and jumping in after it.the third and last time was a new i phone.I was in a tournament, had the i phone in my tackle bag, took it out to check the time on  the way in,and fell off of the back of the boat while trying to prevent my boater from hitting the check in boat.I now have a water proof box that I put my phones in whenever I get around a boat or water.ps:my new I phone cost me 500.00,ouch!!!!!!!!

fishing user avatarhjerk24 reply :

$250-300. Had a new Quantum Bait Caster ($159.00) and a new rod ($100+)...and on the third cast I caught my belt and over it went...only in 13'. I wen't down with no goggles to no avail. I came back the next day with goggles, and NADA!!!!! That one hurt...but it's a fishing story I can now share to the masses!!!!

Fishing Tip----HOLD ON to your rod when casting!!!!

I know where my Rod is.....

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

We were fishing from the bank one day and my partner got a topwater hung up about 10' from the bank in about 8 or 9 feet of water. Over the next 1/2 hour he lost four more baits trying to snag the first one and get it back. I don't know what types they were but it sure was a weird sight seeing all of those cranks and topwaters floating around the stick up.

fishing user avatarBig Tom reply :

I have been pretty fortunate.  I estimate I have only lost at most, approx. 15 bucks in a single trip.

fishing user avatarretiredbosn reply :

I'm not sure if I dumped my tackle boxes in the lake that I would loose three hundred bucks!!!  Most I've lost in a day would be around 15 bucks, I lost two deep divers and several jigs.

fishing user avatardrmnbig reply :

I can safely say I don't think I've ever lost more than 10-15 dollars worth in lure.  As someone else stated, if my whole tacklebox went over I doubt I'd be out much more than a couple hundred bucks.

fishing user avatarNYfishwow reply :

lost over $300 but that was because i'm was sloppy with fishing stuff sometimes.

fishing user avatarbigmountaineer reply :

Yeah one day we were fishing at Bank Lake down in deep south of Georgia and my friend was driving and he hit a huge stump, they are all over that lake by the way, and one complete backpack full of plastics and stuff fell overboard.

He didnt' lose it all but by the time we made it back around the baits were trash.

Other than that I lose stuff all the time, i bought three or four topwaters and have lose them all. Oh well, time to restock.

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

Last year's roadtrip at Lake Guntersville. My prescription sun shades did not have the bi-focal feature my regular glasses have, so I had to take them off to re-tie, or do any close work. I took them off to tie on a jig and stuck them in my vest pocket. A minute later I bent down to untie the boat from a limb and they fell in the lake. I waved bye bye to $400 worth of shades. BTW my new shades are bi-focals with the strap that wraps around your head.

I also threw my new custom swimbait rod and a Shimano Calcutta 400 in Lake Guntersville on the same trip. The 14" cork handle floated long enough for me to retrieve it. Almost had a heart attack though. LOL

fishing user avatarPitchinkid reply :

About 1.5 million in eakins jigs and flappin hogs

fishing user avatarTRYTOFISH reply :

last oct, tablerock; broke transducer on 1 fish finder, broke mount on the other, co pilot broke, dropped new maui jims in lake, threw an 6500 reel on a hmg rod into lake, solenoid stuck on heater in truck on the way back to kansas, 95 degrees in truck all the way home with windows down. never did add up how much it cost. 100's. good thing was we caught fish, truck was under warranty, my uncle went to the spot were i lost the poll in 30' of water, draged it out ofthe lake, cleaned up and gave it back to me for xmas this year.  WHAT A GREAT TRIP!

fishing user avatarfarmpond1 reply :

I was starting to think, "You've gotta be kiddin' me!" when I suddenly remembered the time I went wading after a grasshopper pattern fly snagged on a lilly pad. Unfortunately, my cell phone was in my back pocket. So I guess I lost about 140.00 on that trip. All for a $2.50 fly!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The biggest loss that I have heard of is 4 compete bass rigs, including tow vehicles, to Mexican bandits.

Aaron Martens forgetting to check in, lost a Classic.

How many rod/reel combo's have been kick overboard or blew out of the boat, can't recall. A few cell phones and complete tackle bags and boxes that were left on the back deck.

Yes bass fishing can get expensive when we get a careless.

i did something like this. i had too many rods on the front of the boat, and kicked one in. without thinking i jumped in to save said rod. after getting the rod, handing it back to my father, i got back in the boat, proud i had saved my jerk bait rod. soon i noticed things looked different.........like i was no longer wearing my custom NIKE flex glasses.

long story short, i lost my $400 glasses for a $200 rod. the flip side is i knew my wife wouldnt say a word to replace the glasses.

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

Well, last weekend I only lost about $10 worth of baits, but I lost $150 Oakleys to the depths, My $200 Cell phone got soaked and is now useless.  Oh and a $20 hat went overboard too.  I think I lost my mind too, for fishing in the freezing cold and rain/snow mix.  I can't put a price on that though.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I spilled a tackle box about 45 years ago of what is now antique baits. I had the mechanical frogs that moved there legs when you jerked the line and much more. I still miss that old stuff to this day.

My most recent lure loss has been when i was rushed to fish in a over grown spot I lost about $40 worth of lures in the trees in a few minutes, really its about as fast as i could tie them on was about as fast as i was losing them. I lost a lot of stuff that year.

And some years i don't lose anything go figure....and i fish heavy too.  I even use a lure retreiver from shore too were i can.

My biggest loss so far has been to large snapping turtles that hide on the bottom and blend in with the rocks.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

My boat sank once. I can't count that though since technically we got the boat to shore as it was sinking, pumped the water out and went on our way.

I guess it would have to be the day my MK power drive trolling motor came off the front of the boat and sank in 40 feet of water.

OK, I can't count that either because I hated that thing and losing it was the best money overboard ever.

I lost 2 rods and reels once in a single day. I kicked one in that was laying on the deck and the second flew out of the boat when we were running down the lake in rough water.

fishing user avatarProCrafter reply :

I will tell you when I get back from the Kentucky Roadtrip!! :D

fishing user avatarTooth Dr reply :

I read your line was breaking when casting.  This certainly sounds like defective line, but you posted the line was new.  I have had similar problems.  My problem was knot tying.  I now use polomar or Triline knots and saliva to an excess.  I have read tying with dry line results in failure.  I now have no problems.  If you do not like the saliva solution, I have read that oil is good.

I have the above per a recent purchase; however, I have failed to catch a fish on them.  I have given them as a gift with warm acceptance.

Fishing Guntersville:  I work Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If you are coming to Guntersville, I am available to fish.  I do not smoke and I do not drink alcoholic beverages while fishing.  I am not a guide, nor do I do anything concerning money for fishing.  If you are headed this way, post a contact email.  I am more than happy to assist.  I suggest you buy a map of Lake Guntersville, and I can show you where we catch fish.  For a heads-up, Browns Creek, Minky Creek, Mink Creek & Goose Pond are great places to fish.  Memory tells me a 79 lb Big Head Asia Carp and a 14 Lb Large Mouth Bass were recently caught in Browns Creek.
