What a jerk! 2024

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

So I decided to decided to go fishing this morning in my little jon boat w/ only a trolling motor even though the wind was howling.  I found a quiet cove, close to the boat ramp, that was semi-protected from the wind, and fished for a while with no luck.  I was trying to learn to fish the jig-n-pig and I started to tell the difference between rocks and tree limbs.  Then about 12 o'clock another guy in his big ole' bass boat comes to my spot and pretty much forced me out of there.  He throws both of his anchors in literally 10 ft from my boat, and starts fishing the brush I am.  I don't understand!!!!  I could not believe he did that, Its a 14,000 acre reservoir!  I WANTED TO JUMP IN HIS BOAT AND KICK HIM IN THE STONES!

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

There will be idiot boaters anywhere you go. You just gotta ignore them and not loose your cool.

fishing user avatarRobbyZ5001 reply :

Odd today i fished and i anchored about ten feet from someone and fished the brush pile. What a coinsidence.... Just kidding but on the real.. I just had a bass tournament today on a 72 acre lake  :o with 9 boats and everything went well... suprisingly!

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Dont get violent, just start catching fish in front of him   8-)

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Man I hate when that happens.

I would summarize that the other boater knew of the brushpile and he was going to fish it no matter if anyone else was fishing it or not.

You did the right thing by moving away.

No telling if the guy had a gun or was just a nasty person.

Now the big question for you:  "After the adventure with the other boater running you off your spot, would you render him help if he needed it later that day?"

Easy question - difficult answer.

I would think my hearing and eyesight would have taken a rapid turn for the worse as I made distance between us.

What is your take?

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

That is a good question.  I guess I would save him if he was drowning, but I might let him squirm around in the water for a minute.  ;)

You are a better man than i am....that's for sure....

I think i'd something would happen to me like sam.

"what comes around goes around"

I live by that quote.

fishing user avatartntitans21399 reply :

I hate it when your in your spot, and it seems like no other boaters are in that area.  Then another boater comes not very far from you, you just think "most the lake is clear why come right where I am?"  Then I just think maybe this is a good spot, and i fish it even harder.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

My line for this situation ,...spoken in a very calm voice , is this

"Is it really necessary,...considering this is a 14,000 acre lake, for you to sit on my lap?  I mean, I know as a tax payer you have every right to anchor 10 feet from me in a spot I have been working for 2 hrs but there has to come a time when etiquette has to come into play., No?"

If he gives you crap,...just pull up and leave.  Find out which club he is in and be at the lake his next tourny is at.  I'm sure he'll appreciate the close company for 8 hrs. ;)

fishing user avatarBig T reply :

I had that samething earlier this year in the lower Cape Fear river near the ocean. I was anchored on a section that dropped from 10 to 35 ft deep. This drop off ran a good ways under water because I had fished in futher down the river. These idiots in a Deckboat kept pulling up right beside me a drifting down the ledge, must have been drifting for Flounder, anyways the last time they did it they got so close that I could have literally smacked them in the head with my 7ft pole. It aggrevatd me to no end. I mean this part of the river is close 2-3 miles across include the flats. Rather than get confrontational and get my wife upset I just moved. Besides I had been there an hour only caught a few small croakers, so it was not even a hot spot.

I think I would have rather stayed home and watched the Titans game,  I should have known it was a bad day by the amount of trucks towing their bass boats going the opposite way I was on I-65.

As funny as that is....i'll promise you he'll act like he don't remember doing that to you.

It's like driving in a car...no matter how many idiots are out there driving most of them don't even know they are doing anything wrong. When you do it to them, they'll swear they never do that to other people.

fishing user avatarNumpty reply :

I call people like that... OBLIVIOTS

They seem to be oblivious as to why or what they are doing.

fishing user avatarTriton9 reply :

i hate the people that pull up on where your fishing. it happens though, and always will, theres not much you can do about it, except if you see him again you can follow him all day, they really love it when you do that ;D ;D ::)

With him that close I may accidentally make a bad pitch with 1oz jig into the side of his pride and joy.Oh,sorry I didnt see you I forgot my glasses today.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Same thing happened to me fishing a tournament on Toledo Bend two weeks ago. I had a grass bed point that I was catching a few fish on and this idiot pulled right up on me. instead of causing a scene I invited him to the spot cranked up the big motor and gassed it. No idea if he stayed there or not. Just felt good to do it. Went and found enough fish to finish second. He actually did me a favor as the next spot had a better quality of fish and I would have never fished it if it hadnot been for this idiot. Go figure.

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

Just because the dude has a big boat doesn't necessarily mean he has a clue.  I was recently fishing in a club tournament.  There is a particular spot that is known, but not easy to find on this lake.  Last year my partner and I loaded the boat there in the first 15-20 minutes of the tourney.  Lots of people talked about it, but I had it GPS'd.  So I pull up on the spot, get the boat positioned and start throwing crank baits - after about the third cast, this other club member pulls in with his brand new Triton (he has only had for about 2 months) and drove right over the spot.  My partner and I had to stop casting or we would have thrown over the top of him.  He smiled and waived as he passed by - while I stood there with a I don't understand look on my face.  To this day, he doesn't know what he did.

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

Some people are just plain ignorant.  I know I had probably one of the only calm spots on the lake but still its not like im gonna be able to go very far in my 12'ft pelican boat.  There were 2-3 ft swells and whitecaps out in the channel.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

When that happens to me I take a picture of the person and the boat and put it on the forum for all to see.  That way others know to look out for the inconsiderate folks.

fishing user avatarmayassa reply :

Sometimes its better to just let it go.  Maybe he wanted some company to chit chat.

fishing user avatarDaniel My Brother reply :

Went to my favorite lake on Saturday, but only had a couple of hours of daylight when I arrived.

Good news, only 5 trailers in the lot!

I immediately headed for my new favorite rock pile, only to see another boat 30 yards away. I momentarily debated fishing the spot anyway, since I was running short on daylight, but I decided to give us both a little space and I headed to my second favorite spot.

On a crowded lake, you just have to squeeze in and try to be courteous, but on a big, wide open reservoir I don't see the point.

Part of what I like about fishing is just being alone in the wilderness. He took that away from you and that sucks.

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

I would have said "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!" and if he looked clueless I would have educated the man on manners.

If he ignored me, I would have jumped in his boat.  ;D

fishing user avatarbass109 reply :

I used to fish public waters acouple of years ago. I'm a bank fisherman, 99% of the fish i catch are from the bank. I remember having similar problems like you and all the stupid questions people asked. Now i am lucky to fish in private waters with no people. My advice to you is just leave the spot. If thats one of your favorite spots, you can come back later when that person done catching nothing. I remember fishing with a friend on a public lake. I caught a 12in bluegill then released it back in water. Then this guy shows up in his boat in front of spot where i released the fish, yelling in angry voice "DONT KEEP THAT BLUEGILL".  It just shows how stupid people can get, ::) getting angry for keeping a bluegill.

He can "act" however he chooses, but at the end of the day, he'll "know" that every time he tried to cast towards structure, a red john boat kept motoring into his target water. :)

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Last year I was fishing a recently large downed tree in a fairly good sized lake (for the area anyway).  Sort of the same thing happened when a big bass rig pulled up.  If the boat would have gone to the other side of the tree, it wouldn't have bothered me at all.  But they strategically pulled up right aside of me, edging me out to where I could not fish it other than a small area.  Rather than get mad, I made up a story and told them that they should have been here a little sooner.  That the fish were stacked up and I pulled about a half dozen bass out of the tree before the bite died off.  I then took a texas rigged worm and exposed the hook.  I threw it to the tree where I knew it would get caught.  I then moved the boat into the tree to retrieve it causing quite a commotion.  After I got the lure out and moved back out, they said a few choice words to each other, pulled the TM up and sped off.  Yeah the bite stopped which put a bitter taste in my mouth, but revenge sure did taste sweet.

fishing user avatarRWHusker. reply :

Im with Zel.  It its not going to be me it won t be much fun for them.  If that doesn't work, drop trough and take a dump in the water. :)

Go Big Red

fishing user avatarABC123 reply :

Oh no, make no mistake about it, they know EXACTLY what they are doing! People think they have more money than you, or just flat out think they are superior, which, in turn, allows them to think they can do what they want. Pure selfishness. You see it all the time on the road, on the lake, walking in a store, it's the direction Americans are heading, and it's only going to get worse.

fishing user avatartkite16 reply :

The other day We got off work early so we got there at 1:30 pm.  956 acre lake and theres only 1 trailer in the parking lot.   :).     So we fish around the marina  and make our way out to the main lake .   We get out on the main lake and fish this great point that i love .  And the other boat come by .  3 guys sking no big deal.  Couple of minutes later they  come within 50 feet of us again. And the just kept doing this .    956 acres and there  using the 10 acres  right around us.    It takes alot to get me mad but i was about ready to launch a zara spook at them. >:(

fishing user avatarGLADES reply :

Personally,

I would have put myself between the fishing spot and his boat and cussed him until he got froggy.

If that didnt work, I would pee in his boat.

Finally, if he still doesnt leave, and ive had enough, I will pull out my air horn and submerge it and let out a few blasts.

Im learning to control my temper fortunately.

The snag in the tree is a great one Zel that is hilarious! I will remember that.

If not that and I was in a boat with a motor I'd fire it up even if anchored I let it run ( hoping it was a 2 stroke no less). I would then just idle over between him and the submerged tree ( LBH style ).

You must keep the laws of nature in mind first though. The one that says the guy is twice my size or I am bigger than him LOL!

In his case the 12' Pelican might be a little risky too!

fishing user avatarnaturalnbama reply :

get a far away look in your eyes and start a little tic type jerk witn your head and just tell the guy that you have been doing really well since you got out on parole and that the doctors say they dont think you would ever do it again but that he really should move on. then start lookin around the boat muttering " where did i put that d**n hatchet". tell him he reminds you of a guy you knew in prison and tell him he has a pretty ***.

It works for me but Im 6'6'' and 307lbs with a shaved head and goatee and a couple of nice tats.

fishing user avatarFish Chris reply :

I was Striper fishing a couple weeks ago, anchored about 20 feet from the shore, and this idiot comes down the shoreline, and trolls "between" me and the bank ! I was more amazed at his cluellessness, than I was mad ! I just kind of stared at him with a I don't understand look.....

About an hour later I saw him coming down the bank again....so I bumped my trolling motor to swing over even closer. He got the message..... but went down the bank about 150 more feet "and thought" he was going to go between my buddies boat and the shore... Well, those 3 buddies {about 1000 lbs between the 3 of them} straight told him, "Dude, there's not enough space here... you need to go around us".... at which point the guy got all stuttery, and acted like he didn't realize......

Honestly, I can't imagine somebody could be born this stupid..... Ignorance at this level surely takes many years to perfect !

fishing user avatarFlatfish reply :

A couple of years back I was fishing the mouth of a cove and a pontoon boat came in and got very close and turned causing a good size wake, laughing all the time. Well they came back and anchored about 30' from me, a bunch of collage aged kids, and proceeded to start swiming. Well being the "get even type" and noticing earlier in the day that the water snakes were abundant  up the lake I went and sacked up a few, went back and pulled up close to the swimmers and pitched a net full of snakes right in the middle of them. They were laughing when they ran me off, well when I left the second time I was laughing, so hard that I almost couldn't operate the boat.

Not trying to get slaughtered here but if you were fishing a big event like an FLW or BASS event and you knew a spot where typically Big fish hold and you need a kicker, and once you make the run across the lake to get to your spot there is a jon boat sitting there fishing it what would you do?

That's simple.  First of all, it wouldn't matter if it were a jon boat, a bass rig, a pontoon boat or belly boat sitting on the spot that person was there first, and it's their spot.  They have as much right to be on the water as I do, and I'm absolutely no better than them.  Now for what I would do in the situation you mentioned, is first explain to the person what was going on and ask permission to take over the spot.  If that didn't work I'd offer them $20 to take it over.  If that still didn't work I'd ask them if I could fish the spot along with them.  And if nothing at all worked, I would leave and come back a little later.  I would never overtake the spot or crowd out the other boat that was there first, no matter what!  Decency carries a higher price tag for me than an ill-gotten check from FLW or BASS.

ALL PRAISE ZEL!!!

My previous replies are tongue in cheek.  I would never endanger myself or my fishing partner by pushing a strangers buttons, even they have already pushed mine.  Being the bigger person can feel better than catching a big bass and I'm a firm believer that what comes around, goes around.

I think the most inconsiderate and rude people in the water have to be the jet skiers, numerous times the just come flying by me and mess with me, or come around a corner where they can't see me and almost slam themselves on me. Other fisherman are usually nice and respectfull in my area.

fishing user avatarBrian_Reeves reply :

that happened to me when I had my whaler.  I trimmed the motor up to where the prop was half way in the water and and gunned it.  Nice rooster tail of 50 degree water just about flooded his boat.  I have a really, really, really bad temper though...and it was worse when I was younger :-/

Now this is funny. I have had the same thing happen to me several time on the shore and from a boat. I use to lose my cool but now all i do is get as close to them as i possibly can. I mean if I am on shore we will be rubbing shoulders and if on a boat we will take turns pushing each other off. Kill them with kindness. They usually get the picture. One big pet peeve of mine is when i fished from shore is when a boater would park right in front of me. You better believe he heard my lure coming. I tell you what since I have had those experiences i give as much space as possible even more to bank busters. ;)

fishing user avatar32251 reply :

You should have let him know very fast that you did not appreciate him boating so close to you. If jerks like this are not challenged, they will treat others the same way.  I would have verbally let him know that what he did was not safe, very unsportsmanlike and you did not like it and would he move on. Sometimes it is better to stand up for what you believe is right and be prepared to back it up if you have to.  It makes complaints more viable to take action on them.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

My friend with a boat encounters this all the time.  He has a road cut near his house, and always puts about ten large chunks of flat shale or slate rock in a cardboard box.  When some rude idiot gets on his fishing spot trying to edge him out of the way, he ruins the fishing spot for the next hour or so by depth charging the area with large chunks of rock...  He has gotten some angry words, but they never seem to try to muscle in on him after that.
