Dedicated most of my trip today throwing a small crankbait . I havent ever really focused on throwing one before, but decided to give it a try since I hooked up with a dink on the first cast of the day.
Ive heard different superstitions about hooking up on the first cast of the day.
Is it a good thing or a bad thing for everyone to catch a fish on the first cast you throw on an outing?
I want to catch fish on every cast...including the first. No superstitions here. It's all good.
Whets

Superstitions: a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation
It somewhat depends on the size of the fish - if it's a dink, it can be fun and let you know there are at least fish in the area that are willing to hit what you are throwing. If it's a hawg!! - it's time for celebration, but be careful of getting locked in to that technique and not adapting as the day goes on.
Just out of curiosity, what if someone/a few different people in the first few posts had told you...
"Yes, there has been a few different times now this year, that I have caught a bass on my first cast, and every time this happened I had bad luck the rest of the day."
Would you start quitting fishing every time you catch a fish on your first cast? That's completely illogical and silly, so stop even worrying about such stuff and start practicing, reading, studying, and fishing for as many hours as you can. This way you can learn from actual experience, and not urban myth, fear, superstition or old wives tales.
it's just a stupid superstition. I always make my first cast short and pull it out quickly so theres no chance of catching a fish, and then giving credence to the superstition if I don't catch anything the rest of the day.
It's good. I still don't understand why catching a fish would ever be considered a bad thing when you're fishing?
This one's always been a head scratcher for me.
I was on a business trip to La Grange, Ga. several years ago, and went fishing with one of the local guys on West Point lake. I caught a very nice bass on the first cast. The guy immediately told me we were in trouble, that I had ruined our day. ::)As luck would have it, that was the only fish we caught. He was absolutely convinced that we had upset the fishing gods...
Irrelevant.
I expect a strike on my first cast...and the ones that follow!
;D ;D ;D
After all that's been said, I'd be more concerned if I unbuttoned a big one on the first cast. :'(
Catching a bass on the first cast has always been great for me. Ups my confidence, and leads me to believe they are hungry and waiting for me to catch 'em!
That 's what it is, superstition, I don 't pay attention to them.
I think it just means your planning and lure selection were dead on, use it as momentum and confidence to build on
Superstitions may not be fact based or based on reason, however....
Catching a dink the first cast should tell you something; move.
Being around water and fishing most of my life, catching a bass the first cast is good, having bananas on the boat...well that is another story among anglers.
The only group of competitors more superstitious then anglers are racers; call it luck or karma, you want to be on the good side.

QuoteI think it just means your planning and lure selection were dead on, use it as momentum and confidence to build on
Or, it may just mean that you were at the right time at the right place for that particular fish, you can only determine that your planning and lure selection were dead on when you consistenly catch fish with that lure so don 't stick to that lure too much unless you see consistent results.
At three different places i have caught a fish on my first cast, and I have never caught a fish at any of those bodies of water since. Me and my father are convinced that the 1st cast curse is real.
Along with having good or bad joojoo on the way to the water.
I don't believe in superstition. But I find that if/when I catch a fish very soon in my day, it can lead me to sticking with a bait or technique for too long. My brain tells me it must be the right bait or I must be in the right place, etc. to catch a fish so quickly. Then I'm doomed to wasting too much time trying to reenact it.
I personally don't like first cast fish. I'm more of the above, waste a cast and get past it. Fished a tourney a month or so ago, and caught a solid fish first cast. Did not catch another fish for 3 hours, it was the ONLY fish caught on that bait, switched to one of my jigs later and ended up in second place for the night. So, more or less, the first fish hit something that was not the prime bait that night and sidetracked me for three hours. Other times it could go the other direction. That being said, I still do not like the first cast fish. Absolutely hate it.
I'll take a quality fish whenever it comes.
this thread makes me feel smart.

Haha I resemble that remark!. Actually I'm over this one and am just down the banana thing
why don't people want to believe that when they catch a bass first cast, that it's going to be a good day? :-?
i'm not one for superstition, but in the last few outtings, i've hooked up on the first cast and skunked the rest of the day.
Quotewhy don't people want to believe that when they catch a bass first cast, that it's going to be a good day? :-?
If it makes you happy ...
i dont think of it as a superstition but....... i have only had bad days when catching a fish on the first cast! if i do or dont catch on the first cast i still approach each day the same.
Quotewhy don't people want to believe that when they catch a bass first cast, that it's going to be a good day? :-?
Because when you catch a bass on the first cast, it never is a good day.
this is silly. i must be immune cause i've caught a bass on my first cast a few times and never had a bad day afterwards. logically....if you catch a bass the first cast, from experience it means they're bitin.
Ok here we go;
First cast first fish?? To me it means the fish are biting so try to remember what you did for the presentation on the first cast. Some get ansy and start to slam the lure in the water by casting faster and farther this is when failure kicks in. Stay calm and don't gun and run stay and fish it slow and quietly.
I also find myself exceited and rushing too after the first cast fish so stay calm. 8-)
I'm not superstitious, maybe a little stitious but not super. ;D

Because it's generally not. Also, don't bring any bananas in my boat.
1st cast=fish make me want to fish more
Oh that's BAD!!! LOL
its all good with me
if you THINK catching a fish on the first cast is bad, you will most likely have a different outlook after you catch a fish on the first cast... confidence down, and for whatever ridiculous reason you won't focus the same... Actually believing that catching a fish on the first cast means you can't catch a fish for the first day is the same as believing in magic, and wizards. It's little kid stuff imo.
I am glad you brought this up because more then once this year i have caught fish on my first cast crankin and then i dont get any action for the next 3+ hours
I am pretty happy if I catch one on the first cast cause it means I won't get completely skunked
QuoteSuperstitions: a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation
I agree completely. The only reason a fish on the first cast could be bad is, as others have posted, if it changes YOUR confidence and decision making for the rest of the day. The fish have no idea it was your first cast of the day.
As for me, a fish on the first cast means the rest of the day I can't get skunked... and that my friend is never a bad thing. 8-)
So if y'all believe in the superstition of catching on a bass the first cast, do y'all go home immediately after?
I mean face your day is done right
and then they could say they had a killer day, caught one every single cast! lol
your out on the lake to catch fish no matter if its the first or last cast at least you can polish off the day with one more fish under your belt.
I'm not very superstitious. The whole banana thing doesn't really bother me. It actually has some facts to it. Back in the 1800s, sailors did not want to be on ships carrying bananas from the jungles to America. They knew that a lot of people died on those voyages. However, the cause was from a very deadly spider that live in banana trees and sometimes came aboard these ships. Logic
