Dick's Sporting Goods what are they thinking 2024

fishing user avatarkjfishman reply :

Dick's Sporting Goods what are they thinking? First AR's now they quit selling fishing gear in retail stores! Ask an employee if that was just the Wentzville MO store and he said was the whole region. He went on to say well you can order online. I have no reason to go to any of their stores again.

fishing user avatarMAN reply :

Yeah our locations here in Texas pretty much clearanced out a majority of the fishing department. Looks like they plan on keeping just a handful of fishing essentials.  Of course here in Texas they are not making it....on a good day you may see 5-6 non- employee cars in the parking lot at the locations near me. Academy keeps them at bay.

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

I hope that doesn't happen here in MA.  If DSG stops selling fishing gear I'll be stuck with Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas, both of which don't have great selections and are 45 minutes, or more, away from me.

One local DSG was closing out their .40 S&W bulk ammo last week when I was there.  Hopefully that's not a sign of things to come.

There aren't any good mom & pop fishing stores near me.

fishing user avatarLonnieP reply :

Doesn't bother me. Ours doesn't have much selection and I'd rather support my local shop.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

Drying up here too. I assume that all the on-line business has taken them out. I would stop by to grab something quick, but it's much more efficient to research and order something online.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

They haven't been relevant in years, in this area.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

We had a large Dick's store pull out of the Stony Point Fashion Park as one of their anchor stores three years ago, leaving five other locations open in the greater Richmond, Virginia geographical area.

Since all I do is swim for exercise I don't buy anything from any of the Dick's outlets other than for goggles and ear plugs and stopping by to see what they have on sale at the store off Kroger Center Boulevard behind Chesterfield Towne Center.

With all of the Internet options to the fishing industry we can order on-line easier than driving to a retail outlet and have better selections. As for my plastics, I go to the Zoom distributor to purchase my plastics, other than for Missile Baits and YUM Dingers.

And to make matters worse for Dick's, the guys and gals working the fishing department do not know bass fishing so you are on your own, if you can find anyone in the fishing department in the first place.

fishing user avatarnascar2428 reply :

They still have their Field and Stream stores, so it makes sense to take fishing and hunting out of the DSG stores.

fishing user avatarHookInMouth reply :

Ugh. I can't stand DSG but they were my only option for a lot of stuff.

Now, Sportsman's Warehouse, locally, which is accross the parking lot from the DSG in the mall, touted as an "anchor store" along with JCPenny.  Anyone remember Galyon's?  That's what the DSG used to be, years ago.

fishing user avatarHewhospeaksmuchbull reply :

I thought Dick's was a clothing store, that dabbled in sporting goods.

fishing user avatarMAN reply :

When Dicks chose to take such a stark side with regards to firearms, they lost their outdoors customers..both hunting and fishing since both are heavily intertwined. When I mention our Dicks stores are not doing well in Texas I am referring to both Dicks and Field & Stream.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

I'm one of those supporters that refuse to step foot in another DSG. When they destroyed those AR's as political move that was the straw.

Hope they bankrupt. Good riddance

fishing user avatarHook2Jaw reply :

DSG is the K-Mart of sporting goods suppliers.

fishing user avatarskekoam reply :

Figures.  I was at  DSG store last night and you literally have to walk around for 10 minutes to find someone to help you there.  I only saw 2 guys working the register and 1 in the shoe dept.  This is at a huge store too.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

I buy 90% of my fishing needs online. But within 20 minutes of me for "quick need-it-right-now" purchases I have 2 DSG stores and 2 Walmarts. The DSG stores are not great but are hands down better than the Walmarts.

I will be a little sad if the DSG fishing departments start looking like my Walmarts.

fishing user avatarkdubracing reply :

I stopped by Dick's to kill some time waiting for a movie this past weekend. Same thing in Peoria, IL. All the fishing stuff was gone. The Gander Outdoors here already closed. There is a Bass Pro, and they are good. The Walmarts near me all have a pretty decent amount of fishing gear, but the color selection on lures/plastics is limited. I have no problem shopping online, but I hate paying shipping and don't always want to spend $50-100 to get free shipping. Amazon Prime gets a lot of my shopping if I'm not making a trip to Bass Pro.

fishing user avatarTizi reply :

If shopping at TW, you can use the $5 off code and shipping is only $1.75.  Pretty good deal.  The problem with TW is they charge sales tax now.  There are other online retailers not charging tax...yet.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Ours sucks. There's an Academy close by that kills them. If that's not bad enough, there's a Cabela's (BPS, Jr) a couple exits up the interstate. But the wife and daughter like to go into Ulta, which is next door to Dick's. So I will usually saunter in there to see what's on the clearance rack. There's always some stuff on clearance because they have no idea how to purchase for bass fishing. They stock up on the latest gimmicky stuff like bat and duck-looking lures and then they're on deep discount end of summer.

fishing user avatarGReb reply :

Not to mention shortly after removing the ARs they removed a product due to it having a Bible verse on the packaging. They went PC and lost.

fishing user avatargalyonj reply :

Last time I went to Dick's was because they had some deep discounts on Z-Man stuff at the one close to the office. Bought some chatterbaits. Meh.

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

Dicks is headquartered here in Pittsburgh and they're currently in the process of closing up (and clearancing out) their entire fishing and hunting section. My local Dicks up and packed their entire fishing section in one day and sent it over to the local Field and Stream store. They're clearancing out the hunting/guns section before they move whatever is left over to F&S as well. They've been doing that here since New Years.

From what the guys in the hunting section told me, they're going to put something else in all the stores that sells better than the hunting/fishing stuff. All the hunting sections should be gone in our region by spring from what the employees have been told.

fishing user avatarAlex from GA reply :

I went to my local DSG last week because I had some time to kill.  There was no gun or hunting section but the fishing section was quite complete.  As others said there weren't many people in the store or cars in the parking lot.  Ocala, FL.

X2.  We just lost Gander, and it looks like DSG isn't far behind.  Certainly not my first choice when buying tackle and gear but if I needed something in a pinch I could find something that would make due until my online order arrived.

The closest Field and Stream seemed to be taking all the DSG inventory and it is also now a Sportsman's Warehouse, although the only change was the sign on the building.  Either way I have to make arrangements to get there, or Cabela's.

90% of my purchases are from TW, but sometimes I just like to see something/have it in hand before buying.  Maybe that's just me.

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

I try to stay away from DSG, but if I need something now - a 20 minute drive is better than a 50 minute drive to get to the closest Cabelas. Closest F&S is 350 miles from me. I've noticed the local DSG is slimming down the fishing and hunting sections a bit...but nothing like what I'm hearing here.

fishing user avatarThe Bassman reply :

Dick's has always been a letdown to me here in Indy since they bought our local sg retailer, Galyans back in '03 or '04. Galyan's was an institution around here that really catered to the outdoorsman.

fishing user avatarCraig P reply :

My 2 local stores have been downsizing their fishing and hunting for a few months now. Sucks because the only other store we had (French Creek Outfitters if you’re in SE Pa) is closing their doors as well. Pretty much leaves me with a poor selection at Walmart or an hour trip to Cabelas.

fishing user avatarLog Catcher reply :

My wife and I stopped in a DSG yesterday since she was wanting a new exercise bike. We actually did have someone come over and try to help us. The only way to get one she wanted was to order it online. We then walked over to the fishing dept. Found out it has very little in it now. I have more stuff for fishing than they do. Looked like the hunting section was about gone too. I am about 10 minutes from Sportsmans Warehouse and Cabelas. I will still buy from our local tackle shop when I can.

You and I are from basically the same  neighbor hood. I hated to hear about French Creek Outfitters to some degree. But that place has been on a real slide for awhile. They have not had a good selection in a few years. Plenty of stuff guys didn’t want. Their selection of decent rods and reels has not been there for a couple of years.

They were good for Salty Spiders and SS components. But I’ll get around that. I Recently wanted them to order something for me and they sort of blew me off. Sort of glad I got blown off, better than getting stiffed out of $200.

I should have put two and two together when their Zoom selection went down to nothing A long time ago. Oh well nothing last forever.

fishing user avatarShimano_1 reply :

I'm with some of the above.  When they decided they were choosing sides and were so public with their opinions I decided I wont ever spend another dime at dicks. Used to go quite a bit for everything from clothes to ammo and fishing stuff. They're welcome to make their business decisions how they sit fit. In my opinion they basically spit on probably half of their customers with the decisions they made. Kinda seems like a weird deal tho for a sporting goods store to do what they've done.

Like most of you guys it is a bit of a hike to go to Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's. I use to enjoy going there. It's like they are overcharging for the name brand stuff knowing people will still buy it at a huge mark up and then offering their brand items at a slight discount over others normal price.  The problem is, they stay a few years behind the curve and allow other online retailers kick their prices butts.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

The DSG near me has always been pitiful when it comes to a decent fishing dept. This store has been catering to runners, joggers and fitness center members ever since they opened.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

fishing user avatarLuke Barnes reply :

I have a dicks within a mile, bass pro within a mile, walmart within 3, and academy within 10. I buy most stuff at academy. Bass pro has the best selection around here hands down but you pay for it. Dicks has the least selection, and you still pay for. Sometimes more than bass pro!! So I go to Walmart and what I cant find there I go to academy.

When they cleared out the gun section I asked if they are going to expand the fishing section now, the guy said yeah big time. Wrong. They made it smaller!!! The ONLY thing I've bought from dicks is a pack of bobbers for panfishing.

Also alot like others said, the place is always a ghost town. For customers and employees!

I went to DSG in Greenville for the first time a few months ago and I was surprised how small the fishing section was compared to my old, smaller DSG in Bluffton. I also went into Acedemy once or twice in Greenville, but was not impressed with the selection. So I guess Cabela's will be my go to store - or one of the 6 Wal Marts in the area,

Dick's is ridiculously overpriced for just about everything. About the only time I buy something there is when it's on sale.

fishing user avatarHookInMouth reply :

Cabelas is a 2 hour drive for me and Bass Pro Shops a 3 hour drive. There are a couple very small shops around here that I haven't checked out in a while because they were so small. Other than that, it's order online for me I guess.

I live close to 2 DSG (one has fishing stuff one doesn't), academy sports, too many wal marts to count, two locations of a mom and pop store called c and c outdoors, edgemoor outdoors, McKee outdoors, 4 live bait/tackle stores near 4 different dams and probably some  I'm forgetting and some I've never heard of. Brick and mortar is alive and well in East Tennessee. I think about the only thing I've bought from the internet is replacement worm gears for my round Abu Garcias and some vibrating jigs from @Bluebasser86 (that flat out catch em)

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

In some ways, online ordering has opened the door to niche B&M stores.  I've already seen it in some categories.  I could see the same with fishing gear.

Our Academy is about 20min from our house. They blow Dicks out of the water on prices, selection, and service.

fishing user avatarbillmac reply :

No DSGs near me but I was in one in Poughkeepsie NY and it seemed to have a full fishing section.  I have a Runnings near me and that has a very good fishing section, if a little pricey.

For an area that contains (according to Bassmaster) the best bass fishing water in the country, we have very few places besides Walmart to purchase fishing tackle.

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

Wow! My local stores do not have the greatest selection and has discontinued selling some of my favorite line as well, but I hope they don't stop carrying fishing gear altogether. That said, my local store seems to stock up every spring and buy late June the fishing section is cleared out for the year, even for basic things like hooks and weights.

I must admit, I am a TackleWarehouse fanboy, they have almost everything. There are a few local stores I can get things like hooks and whatnot at and the people who work there are also helpful should I have questions as well but they're not open at hours I can always get there.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

I used to love the dsg near me when it was new. The fishing and hunting area was great. It still is the only place I can find 4 inch senkos. I haven’t been there in a year or so now , and hadn’t heard about their gun stance until I read it on here. I had about quit going there anyway. When Academy opened up 15 -20 minutes Away , I started going there mostly. Love It ! The second closest wal mart also has a decent fishing section that is run by a friend that bass fishes, so it’s better than average. There are a few mom/pop stores left. The one I like best is Green Acres SG. It’s near my church around 1/2 hr  away. They have more hunting than fishing stuff, but they carry a LOT of zoom baits which I love. A little pricey but worth it for the selection.

We’ve heard for several years that BPS is supposed to be opening a store around 20- 25 minutes from me - not sure what’s taking so long.

fishing user avatartxchaser reply :

Our local shop is pretty good, guys in there actually know what they are talking about.

We have all of dicks/academy/cabelas (2)/bass pro.

I can't see any reason to ever go to bass pro or cabelas for fishing gear ever again. Frankly the in-store experience is about as bad as their web sites. Shopping online I don't wander three isles looking for something, I find it in a couple of clicks. And being able to cruise bestselling and new arrivals is really useful too. Likely to have every size and color. Five bucks for two-day shipping? That's less than the cost of the gas. And  if it is urgent I'd rather give it to the local guy anyway.

The only problem with online for me is that it's too easy. Monkey doesn't even have to get me out of the chair.

And yes I'd overpay on Amazon before I give the Dicks any money. You don't have to sell any particular category, that's fine by me, but I don't have to shop there when you make a scene about it either.

ps If you are in north texas, Academy's outlet is around here. I have no idea how they decide what goes there - I went there accidentally as it used to be a regular academy. Last time I went there were piles of owner hooks, larew baits, lake fork ring frys, zoom trick worms, and booyah frogs... in good colors. Much of it for less than a buck a bag. /shrug

I had gotten to Galyans on a few occasions when I'd get down to Virginia. Nothing like that was at my finger tips at home. Was able to pick up many things I couldn't get at home. Would shake my head and say this wasn't fair. I don't live in the bass mecca of the country. Things will be limited and only be what they are for me.

There is only one true mom and pop shop in my area, they've been there since the 50's, true family run since than. They are a pleasure to do business with. I use them as much as possible. My grandsons love it there. Hope they can keep it going for them.

There was a pop shop (not sure of any mom) in my area that many of the locals including myself did not patronize very much. Guy had an attitude and possessed no people skills what so ever. He sold out to a young guy who is giving it heck. He's doing good and turning that place around. It's a bit of a pleasure to go there now. Pick up a few things, share some fishing tips, order in what you want, share a few pics. Things are looking up there. Word on the street is locals are liking it a lot better.

Owning a tackle shop is a tough business. Location means everything. Internet doesn't help. Maybe have on-line ordering. Have a decent web site. Have to have good hours. Have to have hours that revolve around fishing. Have good live bait selection. This is what most guys complain about in my area. It doesn't really affect me but I can see where people are coming from. I grew up trout fishing at a pretty young age and hammered all the trout streams in the tri-county area. And still do. I remember being in quite a few bait and tackle shops that are no longer around. Different time, different way of life than.

fishing user avatarTlauz reply :

I have a Cabelas 15 minutes away. I always try to load up when I find a sale (clearance bins).  Since the merger with BPS they carry a lot more bass tackle. Since 95% of the people in this area fish for walleye, the selection does not really match the market. Last year it was KVD jerkbaits for $1.88 and Zman plastic worms for $.99

It's kind of sad.  The one at West County Mall used to have a pretty good sized fishing section at the top of the main escalator going to the 2nd floor.  Go up there and it was right in your face.  They had some pretty good deals from time to time and their selection was pretty good too.  Then they moved it over on the other side of the second floor opposite the escalator on the other side of the hunting stuff.  Went from about 5 aisles to 3, and I'm guessing, now to none.  Oh well.  Academy is just down the road and isn't in that horrible mall.

They've just recently expanded north into Missouri.  Prior to a couple years ago the closest ones were Springfield and Joplin MO.  Other than that, they were mainly spread throughout the southeast parts of the country.

fishing user avatarbillmac reply :

Looks like the nearest Academy is about 900 miles, so I guess I'm stuck with Runnings and Walmart.  And online.

You know, when it comes right down to it, other than looking through the bargain bins, I don't really find browsing a fishing section that productive.  I find it a little overwhelming sometimes.  I think I prefer just picking the stuff out online.  That is certainly true for rods and reels.  I find the brick and mortar stores seldom have exactly what I'm looking for.

I only shop Dicks online as they will have some deals on baits. Hate going into either of the stores around here. I do like Academy for online deals also, love their h2o cranks.

Dicks around here has always been limited and overpriced  for hunting and fishing supplies.

A lot of the workers were also rude.

occasionally you could get a good deal on closeout items.

Since the latest changes, I have no reason to visit.

This time of year I make a few tackle runs to Academy, Scheels,  and Bass pro/ Cabelas.

They can all have a few deals on closeouts.

I did notice Bass Pro and Cabelas are a little stingy this year on the deals.

Some of the old model reels are still at full price. and the pro qualifier sale is quite a bit more expensive compared to last year.

I saw a job listing once for a supervisor position at a Dicks warehouse near Indianapolis.  Number one job of the supervisor was to keep unions from forming.  Say what you want about about unions (support or don't), after I saw that I realized that store is nothing but a front for Chinese junk made in sweat shops.  Granted, most stores might be like that. But to say the main requirement of the job is to keep unions from forming, ugh.

I remember when they bought out Galyon's. They closed that store and moved to a new one at the mall. The first impression I had after wading through all the spandex and running shoes to get to the fishing and firearms section was the prices were high, no help, and the selection left a lot to be desired. Fast forward 18 years they are closing. I went back maybe 5 times and my impression didn't change.

We have 2 good independent gun and fishing stores that put Dick's to shame. Knowledgeable help great selection and as far as prices they are so close to TW it isn't funny shipping cost are more than the cost of gas.

Then the CEO runes his mouth and alienates a good part of his customer base. They are getting what they asked for.

This. They are expanding Field and Stream into more locations. Makes sense to take the Outdoors out of Dicks to drive more traffic to their F&S stores. I went to F&S for the first time in November as it is 3 hours from my house and I enjoyed their store and prices more than the bass pro that's 10 min from my house. I really hope that my area is one that gets a F&S with their expansion.

I wouldn't drive three hours just to shop at F&S especially since Fisherman's Central is only 2 but I do like the selection of products at F&S more than at my local BPS and Cabelas. I like that I can get some of the newer brands that most stores don't carry. And they price matched Tackle Warehouse sale and I got a 13 Fate Black rod for $60 after TW sold out.

Zero chance anything coming out of Dicks is from Chinese sweat shops. But with regards to "Made in China" in B&M retail stores, unfortunately they can no longer compete and survive without Chinese made products. Only change you can expect within the next couple years is to see more made in Vietnam, Cambodia and the Phillipines slowly replace China made products. (fishing gear and tackle).

fishing user avatarMrPeanut reply :

It's fairly difficult for stores to keep a large selection of fishing lures in stock in multiple colors/sizes and still be profitable, so I'm not shocked Dick's is failing to keep up a fishing dept in some areas.  Unless location wise they're by some good fisheries, they just won't have the product turnover needed.  It sucks for us as the consumer, but I'd imagine it's pretty difficult for a store manager to explain why the space is needed for all the packages of just the worm section - if you think about how much shelf space it takes up just to have a couple sizes in a small handful of colors - compared to other items/sports that may sell year around.  Particularly up here where the water is hard for several months.

Compared to fly shops, where their inventory is a lot smaller and can keep hundreds of flies in what is practically a dresser drawer.

I have never been a fan of DSG for fishing gear, even though there are two close to me.  An occasional diversion when I needed a long lunch break at work were about the most they ever offered.  Prices just not in line with what I can find online or at Academy, BP, Cabelas.

Having said that, now that the news came out about them removing fishing gear from their stores, and I see lots of people in other parts of the country getting 50% off or other good deals, I have been to both of my local DSGs in the last week to hunt for closeout sales.  One had absolutely no fishing gear on sale, zero, and the other had a small table where a few things were marked down maybe 10%.  Both stores still had shelves basically full of their fishing gear.

Good ole DSG.  Disappointing me even to the end.

fishing user avatarGrumpyOlPhartte reply :

Lots of interesting comments here regarding DSG.  Where I am located (far western MA) it’s either DSG or Walmart for fishing “stuff”.  Local store employees inform me that although they are no longer permitted to carry firearms, they are actually planning on expanding the fishing section.  It’s too early to know what that entails, I actually saw a small selection of Dobyns and St. Croix rods on the rack.  Neither of the Fury swimbait rods but some Mojo and, for the Dobyns, the 703, 705, and a few others. Will have to see ... The biggest thrill for me were the top three lures shown in the pic here. Never thought I’d see the day!!  Granted, they are actually provided through Catchco, but at least they are decent-looking swimbaits for $15.00 a pop. (The others were ordered from Tackle Warehouse.) I’m wondering what they’ll have when spring gets here.  Needless to say, they all bounce and slide across the ice really well. I got some great distance for my casts!  Anyway, I’m not ready to give up on DSG just yet.  But then again, when ya live two blocks from the ends of the earth, ya take what you can get.

That's the truth.  I used to have dozens of excellent mom and pop stores in my area and they've slowly closed their doors since online shopping became prominent.  The few that are still around now have largely empty shelves and seem to make most of their money off of live bait.

I don't shop at that Blue Place either...and that's all I'll say about that ...but as for the issue about M&P tackle shops surviving in MA, they are all over the place. Of course I imagine the ones doing the best are those strategically located either on the coast line for salt, or near a major body of water such as Wachusett Reservoir. I vowed to not raise my kids like that. They love to fish and know the names of the fish. But I do agree, I dont see many kids out in my neighborhood and I am a worried parent when it comes to going in the street. Although my kids are still very young. Oh the agony of it all...I'm of an age where we were expected to be outside the better part of the day, schools encouraged physical fitness (my grandsons are in middle school and have gym class only half the year, one day a week....ugh) and as mentioned, we had pick up games in our neighborhood.

My oldest grandson plays dek hockey, which I happily pay for, but the "rules" about how many minutes they can play makes me nuts. No player is allowed to be on the dek over 6 minutes. Poor things are tired, and must have a mandatory rest. Really?? Tired after 6 minutes? I can't ever remember feeling tired at 12-13 years old, except maybe by bedtime (another idea that appears to have faded into history) after being on the run all day out in the sun, rain, snow, heat, cold....you name it.

Anyway, I have a rule when the kids come fishing with me...no devices of any kind are allowed once the rods come out of the truck and in the truck, they can only use their phone if it rings.

As for the longevity of places like DSG, it's anybody's guess. I never find anything I want in their tiny in-store fishing department, their prices are a bit high (although they will price match, begrudgingly if you ask) and their staff (at least in my local DSG) are not very knowledgeable, nor are they very interested in helping folks.

Okay, off my soapbox...sorry for the rant.

Lot's of good brands like Megabass, Jackall, and other upscale baits can be found there. New offbeat or exotic stuff pops up often. Great terminal tackle selection too. They even sell Mend-it there. Between coupons, DSG cash, flash sales, price matching, and the fact that I get bombarded with gift cards during times of giving it's a good option.

This is sort of true.

I've found that there are still plenty of good private retail shops out there. There aren't any where I live and the closest decent places to me are a Cabala's and BPS about 35 miles away so I've had to buy online for quite a while now.

I realized a long time ago that the small shops doing good business are making it by doing business online. A large number of these smaller brick and mortar places are running stores on the Big Auction site, and there are as well as many small  non-brick and mortar shops that only exist online. Some others like Delaware here, and The Tackle Trap over at Tackle Tour attach themselves to forums like this one and provide excellent and personalized customer service this way.

No, it's not as good as being able to hold that Megabass rod before you buy it, but it is a whole lot better than being limited to Cheapo stuff at Wally World and once you develop a relationship with the on-line guys, you get a lot better advice and personalized service than you will get out the puddin' faced sales droids over at the BPS.

I'm an older guy and sure, I'd rather it like it was in 1970 when all the little shops were in high gear, but this is now and my advice is to stop looking to the accountants at the big corporations and find the fishing guys online who are just like the guys who used to run those little shops. After all, they still are the same kind of guys.

At least that is how I see it.

Exactly. That's what drives large chains; accounting.  They don't care what we want, they care what they can sell. If used toilet paper became the next overnight sensation, they would have no qualms about clearing out sporting goods (or anything else) and putting in several aisles of ...... well, y'know.

And what you or I buy isn't of any importance to them. It's what millions of people across the country buy that they look at. We used to say, "Can't see the forest for the trees."  For these guys, we should say, "Can't see the trees for the forest."

Legality enters into it, too, but only obliquely. If it wasn't illegal to sell nuclear weapons, they'd have them in stock and on sale.

Yep, If the weather was too bad to go fishing you could always drop by the tackle shop and argue about stuff with the regulars. Those shops would order just about anything you wanted and you got to check out the stuff that other people had ordered too. That's the way you got to check out a lot of gear that the shop might not be able to stock all the time.

One shop by me is still open, but the guy who ran it for 40 or so years passed away and his daughter is running it now, but not very well. I try to buy stuff there when I can, but there is never really anything there to buy. Some of the stuff hanging on the racks are left from 15-20 years ago. Sad.

I dropped into my local DSG in Hanover, MA.  The fishing department is now three isles and pricier rods are where rifles used to be.  I pressed the HELP button on the counter and the clerk that arrived told me this location is eliminating fishing/firearms due to lack of sales.

Hopefully Dedham, Plymouth, and Brockton keep SOME of their fishing gear.  Bass Pro isn't one of my favorites, is over priced, and is 45 minutes from home.  The same goes for my nearest Cabelas (which to me is a Bass Pro in a different color jacket) that's just over an hour away.

Here in SE Michigan our local DSG has an abysmal fishing section.   The few fishing aisles are half empty all the time and even the stock they do have is stacked up so that you have to sort through to see what they really have.     Besides that they have one clerk in that area that simply lies to sell stuff.    I've called him out on it a few times and he gets angry (oh well the customer he was scamming was thankful).

To be honest, if they fully close the fishing section then there is not much lost in my local DSG.

I just found out tonight one of Rochester’s four dicks store is moving into a empty Sears store building. This store will be huge.

As a former DSG Employee here in NY what this company is doing is a classic "shoot yourself in the foot situation" as I like to call it, I worked part time in Apparel from 2018 to early 2019 and they were already getting rid of the hunting area. They also moved the fishing area to the back part of the store.

I recently went in there to renew my fishing license and the fishing isle was completely gone. I personally don't see DSG lasting long into the new decade, as some other users said in this thread they did bad business when they took a political stance on the sales of AR-15s.

I really hope we continue to see the rise of Academy & Tackle Warehouse this decade in the fishing market. They know what we as anglers want and always deliver it.

Since the merger we now affectionately call both locations Bassela's ????

This will be terrible, if true. I live near a dicks and it’s the best fishing shop around. It will be a disaster if they eliminated the fishing section.

fishing user avatarSharon Calci reply :

Only 100 of the 720 stores are discontinuing fishing. They are only pulling it from the stores that had drastically dropped in sales over the last few years. All of the stores are going to be pulling hunting and guns now that the trial stores (who expanded fishing to replace hunting) had a big increase in sales. I work in lodge for the store with the biggest fishing/tackle dept and I’m shocked at how much product each store is transferring to us because they couldn’t sell it even on clearance! I can’t imagine any location not being able to sell enough tackle, there’s nowhere else to go.

Hahaha. DSG near me never had anything anyways.

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

DSG in Rockaway and Wayne NJ are stocked to the gills with fishing gear. Same for the one in Paramus but smaller scale.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I have a DSG just down the street from me in Indy and it's positioned close to Eagle Creek (one of the few places to fish in Indy).  A lot of guys use to go there for everything but when they stopped selling the stuff most fisherman buy and started carrying junk, everybody stopped going.  Also they raised their prices higher than most online stores.

I also feel sorry the guys that work there.  I can tell they care but Dicks Inc seems to be their own worst enemy when it comes to selling fishing gear.  My hope is that we get an Academy some place close by.
