Why Not Store Soft Plastics Out Of Their Bag? 2024

fishing user avatarPolarkraft05 reply :

Is there a reason people dont like to store their soft plastics, in say a plano tray?

it seems everyone wants to keep their soft plastics in the bag they come in but why?

it seems much easier to find the bait/color i want if they are in a tray. rather than sifting through each bag, whether they be in a binder, or ziplock bag or whatever.

what are the downfalls to storing in plastic trays, aside from them reacting in the tray, as most brand name trays will not do this anymore, atleast thats the impression im under from their advertising.

fishing user avatarTalmadge reply :

i always store mine in the bags because the scent and one time i saw this guy who had his all stored in a plano box and he had it in a backback layin on the ground while fishing and at the end of the day they were all melted so i just stick to keeping mine in the bags never had them melt so i guess thats why

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

You can keep most plastics in a box. I keep my zooms, sluggos, yum, robo worms and strike king plastics in a few 3700 boxes. Never had a problem with them in there, even the ragetail line.

Some you cannot. Gulp and Trigger X really stink, plus gulp will dry out and be useless.

Other brandss, like Chompers, Gambler and Lake Fork have a very strong Garlic scent that will certainly stink things up as well...

fishing user avatarDave P reply :

Keep mine in plano boxes. No problems at all.

I go both ways :wink2:

If it's something I stock up on I keep them in the packages and put multiple packs in a ziplock bag. If it's stuff I don't use often and only have a handful, but feel the need to have it on the boat...cause...well...you never know. it goes in a box.

i think im going to go opposite of this. put the go to baits, in the box so they can be on quick draw mode. put the extra baits, in a bag, for the times i want to dig them out and try them.

when im in the back of the boat, tournament fishing, ill just bring the confidence baits, that are in the box, so i dont have any extra clutter.

fishing user avatarSoCalFisher reply :

I store mine out the bag and have never had any problems. Just don't store plastics such as gulp out of the package because those dry up. Boxes are so much easier to organize, way faster to find the bait you want.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

If I had a boat I probably would store in their bags, for the reasons given already.

But as a tourn co-angler I use the tray's.

It took a while to find just the right bag [Flambeau AZ8] that can fit everything I bring, and have the right configuration but it works for me.

fishing user avatarQuitlimpin reply :

I keep mine in gallon zip lock baggies sorted by type, color, etc. and just take along what I think I will need for the day. This really helps me stay more organized and cuts down on the clutter.

fishing user avatarOsprey39 reply :

Used to be back in the old days the colors would bleed pretty badly and I have also seen the oil they were packed in wreak havoc on tackleboxes. I don't think that's much of an issue anymore but perhaps old habits remain.

fishing user avatarfowlskies reply :

I put my bags of plastics in gallon ziplocs. But when I change plastics and it is still useable I put them in a big tray in my tackle box to be used the next time I want that type of plastic. So basically I have a gallon bag full of bags of plastics and a tray with one or two of each bait in a large tray for quick access when I want to change the style of plastic. It works for me.

I haven't ever used Gulp but I've heard these have dried up on boat decks during the day, so if you use these I definatley would keep them in their bag or jar. Also, the Zman elastick baits have to be stored in their own packages because they react to other plastics. Other than that you should be fine.

X2, but I don't tournament fish.

fishing user avatarNCbassmaster4Life reply :

As long as the plastics are in an air tight compartment via a plastic bag, it will not matter, as long as the baits aren't exposed to a long spand of unwanted fragrences.

I haven't had too much of a problem with the plastics I've used. Some of my white grubs took on a little chartruse from one of my other baits but thats about it. I kind of like how a couple of my grubs are now white with hints of chartruse blotches, it gives them a different look. But i've mixed quite a few different baits, brands and colors as I mentioned in my above post without hardly any effect on them.

Yeah, I was referring to the ones made back in the late 80s early 90s. They bled like a stuck pig lol.

fishing user avatarMichael DiNardo reply :

I put garlic scent in most all my plastics so those stay in their bags.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Quality soft plastics are normally packaged in quality bags. These bags are much more durable, last much longer, do not leach the oil from the plastic baits like zip lock bags and cheaper bags do, will keep the bait more like new when stored in them. Quality bags along with utilizing hardshell clams like many of Rage Tail products is another step to maintain the best possible quality to the end user and adds even more longevity during storage while maintaining correct shape as well.

fishing user avatarJake P reply :

I have never stored mine outside of the original package. I have a plano box that is really more of a deep storage tub. forgot the number of the box but it holds all of my plastics that i keep on the boat. So i have them inside the original packages, inside the plano box, inside my tacklebag. Never had a problem doing it this way.

fishing user avatarOsprey39 reply :

I have two soft tacklebags and in one of those I keep all my plastics in 3 soft satchels where I keep most of them in the original bags. I have one for craws/creatures, one for finesse worms and one for worms with moving tails.

fishing user avatarfowlskies reply :

Packman I like that idea. is it big enough to hold a gallon bags worth? I might have to look for one that will hold that much but still fit in the bottom of my tackle box.

fishing user avatarSoCalFisher reply :

Sorry this is kind of off topic but kind of related. Is it okay to store worms with the tails folded or a craw bait with the claw folded or will this mess them up?

Some plastics do have a memory, just depends but I would try to avoid it.

fishing user avatarJellyMan reply :

I just like em in bags. Just less hassle that way to me. I have 2 hard boxes. One for lures and one for tackle. Then I have the rest of my soft plastics in the their bags filling the rest of the space in my Abu Garcia Veritas bag. I also put extra scent juice on all my plastics so I prefer them to be sealed.

fishing user avatarSoCalFisher reply :

Okay but lets say I took my paca chunks out of the package but after reading this I want to put them back in. How is there any way I will get them all back in there straight? Do you think I can just throw those in there anyway?

Yes easily. It is pretty big. I have probably 25 bags of various plastics in there.
fishing user avatarJake P reply :

Plano 3731 bulk storage Is what it is. I also have one that is double that size but it takes up most of my tacklebag so i dont use it. With the 3731 i can still fit 3 other standard size plano boxes in my bag comfortably.

About how many bags of plastics can you fit in there and in the bigger one which I assume is the 7080? I'm debating ordering the 3731 or the 7080.

fishing user avatarLgMouthGambler reply :

I keep mine all in their original bags, sometimes doubled up if there is enough room. Then I put them in tackle bags which are labeled to keep organized. I just find I can store more this way.

fishing user avatarBass Dude reply :

I used to take them out and put them into Plano boxes, but then everytime I would buy more stuff I would have to rearrange them. It got to be a pain, now I keep them in the original bags and store them in larger plastic bins by type.

fishing user avatarB@ssCrzy reply :

I keep mine in the bags. Biggest reason is why pay more money for something to store them in when you are already paying for something that they were made to be stored in. I am on a tight budget. So I can either pay $30 for something additional to store them in or keep them in the bags and buy $30 worth of new cranks, frogs, plastics, etc. I think that bait monkey knows what I will do....However, I can understand, after seeing pictures of some of the tackle collections you guys have, that organization is a big factor you have to deal with. So to each his own.

fishing user avatarSoCalFisher reply :

I from now on will store all my plastics in their bags. Over the weekend I went fishing and noticed all my black and blue senkos were gone but then I noticed all the black senkos had a tiny hint of blue still and realized all the black bled into the blue. Same thing happened will my black and chartreuse plastics.Only plastics I will store out of a package are ones that don't come in a package.

fishing user avatarNebraskaBasser reply :

I fish from a float-tube (don't own a boat), so to maximize the selection while minimizing the quantity, I'll store my plastics in Plano 3600's - that fit my tube's pockets.

ON THE OTHER-HAND, I found whee I had accidentally mixed a couple of Elaz-tech (Z-Man) plastics with some "regular" plastics = a big melted-together mess! <doh!!!>

So going forward, I'm either going to keep all Elaz-tech TYPE baits in their bag OR in their own box.

fishing user avatar(='_'=) reply :

im still learning, but from what i have seen, i decided to keep mine on their bags, and keep the bags in plano 3700 boxes... i can fit 8 bags per box, and fold them in a way that you can see all the colors... i also keep worms in a box, lizzards in another...

fishing user avatarwhitwolf reply :

I keep all my soft plastics In the original bags and store them In the two side (zippered) pockets on either side of my tackle bag.

I know some wouldn't like this because it can be a pain looking for a particular plastic but for the most part I take the time to store the baits I "think" I will use the most that day In the mesh pockets In front.

fishing user avatarKyle Mahaffey reply :

I keep them in the original bags then have a gallon size bag with the color and type of worm, so it is easier to get to when I need it.
