As the title says what lures have you bought that you didn't really think you could catch fish on but you bought anyways and did- I can't really think of anything though....
Zoom Trick worm in bubblegum (pink). I caught a ton of fish on these one day years ago. I have not caught anything with them since.

Same lure here.
Mann's Pogo shad, The small one

Fish, there are different ways to fish the pink trick worm.
One of the best is weightless as a topwater using a spinning rig setup with 6 or 8 pound mono.
You can add a "light weight" sinker or a red bead in front of your hook to have it go a little deeper.
Make it move like a snake in the water and fish it everywhere.
I have caught many bass on this weightless setup.
Please give it a try this summer and let us know if you are successful.
Lemon No-Flake five-inch Senko number 9-10-192.
Picked up a pack for fun and in a tournament on Buggs Island and nailed the first two we caught that morning by casting it to where the pier met the bank.
My partner laughed when I rigged it wacky style and then got bent out of shape when his presentation did not garner any bites and I had put two in the well.
Another one is the Arbogast metal crawfish. I have used it only once on Lake Anna and it is so "different" that I have never thrown them again for fear of losing one.

Never heard of this. Do you mean a metal lipped Mudbug ? They are great lures.
I accidentally bought a Bomber Long A Minnow with a propeller on the back called the Prop A. I went to fish it one day , saw the propeller and thought "What the heck ? " Anyway it has become one of my most productive Big Bass lures. I bought a dozen of them when they were discontinued . A lot of folks say they struggle with post spawn fish . The BomberProp A excels at catching the Post spawners .
When a buddy of mine told me to use a weightless fluke. I thought it would be a waste because I've rarely seen minnows or forage swimming just beneath the surface. Man was I wrong. That's pretty much one of my top producing lures in post spawn and summer. On warm summer nights I've grown accustomed to rigging it weedless and using it in place of a frog in moderately heavy cover/grass.
This won't be a surprise to the Midwest Finesse guys, but my I stifled a chuckle when my wife put on a bright orange and green marabou crappie jig one slow day a couple of years ago; she immediately started putting LMB in the boat. No hawgs, but it has been a consistent numbers lure for us when the bass get picky.
A Manns Waker Elite for me, I knew it was 3/8oz but when I got it you would have thought it was an ounce, it was big and I got it for prespawn smallmouth. I didn't even think of tying it on until we were on a good topwater bite but all smaller fish so I thought, why not, it is a big bait. I will admit I had no faith, but on the 4th cast I got a violent hit and landed a solid 18" smallie, a couple of cast later a 20" fish came to the boat, it was awesome! Now that bait is discontinued but I have a small stash, and last summer my buddy laughed when he saw me tie it on, he laughed until I had 3 fish weighing 13 lbs 11oz and then he wanted one and so I gave him one, now he no longer laughs.
I fish a small pond and when I started fishing I didn't think I could get bit on a 10 inch worm. Boy was I wrong. The only downside is overtime I tie one on now I have to listen to everyone and their mother tell me that their aren't fish big enough in the pond to eat that worm.
To be honest, I never thought the Rapala DT would catch fish because of how odd the shape is. Low and behold, it's probably my favorite crankbait to use.

This is actually my skunk repellent, I rig it weightless and toss it into the holes in lily fields... Look in the lower left in the net...Bubble gum!!

Ditto...
Back on point though, although Ive only caught pickerel on it, a argoblast buzz plug. I picked one up out of novelty and decided to toss it around one evening, had about a dozen pickerel in an hour...
Deps Buzzjet
honestly the hollow body frog was one i didn't expect to do much. then i fished it in the right situation a couple of times and it all made sense
Whenever I threw a jig for the first time, I thought there was no way that a fish would eat this... I was wrong.
Heddon Big Bud. Had it in the tackle box one day and put it on just to see how it would run. Couldn't believe when I caught a couple of bass on it. I should have taken a pic, but I didn't have a camera.

I use to have one of those , I never did use it and sold it in a yard sale .

Same here, last year around November me an my partner decided to try for one last bass trip on our favorite lake, got there and ice was starting to form in the shallows, knew the bite was going to be slow that day but maaaaannnnn was it. We threw everything we had and got nothing I was changing baits out a lot. Looking into one of my boxes I saw 3 jigs had no idea how to fish them or even why I had bought them in the first place (darn bait Monkey). Tied one on and a sweet beaver trailer and tossed it out in the middle of the lake and just let it sink. Right after my first pull I thought I felt a very lite tap, I let it sit and sure enough another lite tap, decided what the heck hook sets are free and I'm batting 0 so I let her rip and caught the only fish of the day a nice 16incher. Kept fishing it the rest of the day and getting taps so my buddied finally gave in and tied one on but couldn't seem to land one even though he was now finally getting some attention. It was all over after that I proceeded to buy a whole box full of jigs over the winter plus my first baitcaster setup. Spring came and I started to pitch them into cover. Needless to say I am in love its my favorite way to fish now and I am never out without a jig tied on.

Yes! I remembered their name after I posted.
If you say they are great lures I will give them another whack this summer.
Great reading that you like them.
Thanks.
Mudbug is my preferred Crankbait very early, when the water is still cold around 40 degrees but the sun is warming it up in the afternoon. . We reel them as slow as we can along steep banks and catch some real cows .
First Mann's Stretch 30+ I found while on the road. Bought a dozen of them on sale. Thought these will work for Stripers at Pickwick Dam. And i was right they did catch stripers when I could get one pass the Large Mouth and SmallMouth bass.
That has been many years ago, and still fish them at times.
Pete
Youcan make these yourself also with other brands ,id still like to find some of these anyhow ..now im gonna.go huntingOn 1/16/2015 at 7:16 PM, scaleface said:Never heard of this. Do you mean a metal lipped Mudbug ? They are great lures.

I didnt buy it technically...but i cut the bottom out of a can out and used it as the worlds worst spoon, caught a half pounder largemouth. This was about 8 months ago, havent tied another on since though heh
Bubblegum Trick worm is also on top for me.....especially when I was introduced to the weightless w/ swivel approach in the summer.....
As far as newer baits that I was sceptical of but love now is the Jackall Pompadour
Gitzits, Slug-gos & Senkos were all unseemly to me.
One time while bank fishing with some buddies we got some burgers for lunch, and like always I took the pickles off. So, I put the pickles on my hook (as a joke), and three seconds later my bobber goes down, and catch a nice bass. After that everybody started using pickles. I tried to trade for more, but they were like gold.
I still don't know why spinnerbaits work. I throw them a good bit and catch plenty of fish on them, but they are seriously the dumbest looking baits out there.
In New Jersey back in the 1970s, "Bunker-Dunking" was all the rage for giant striped bass.
Before sunup, I'd meet the work boats at the pound nets in Raritan Bay, and buy live bunkers for $1 apiece.
We drifted live foot-long menhaden (locally known as 'mossbunkers') on a dropper rig with a sliding egg-sinker.
Unfortunately, when drifting a live bunker your biggest nemesis were the schools of bluefish.
Blues are ravenous toothy fish that would begin at the tail of the live bunker and chop their way forward.
You could feel their sharp jabs like a school of piranhas, but by that time it was too late.
When you retrieved the rig you'd find nothing but the head of the bunker, which we promptly tossed into the ocean.
One day my friend told me that while cleaning a striped bass he found 3 bunker heads in a striper's stomach!
Since that day we never discarded another bunker head, and actually caught striped bass
by drifting a fish head on a big treble hook. Crazy but true.
Roger
Buzzbaits and spinnerbaits still, i dont get it but they work!

I too am invested heavy in Jigs.
In the late 70's - early 80's, I missed nearly all of the early buzz bait craze. I just didn't get how a sinking lure worked as a top water lure. My only experience with top water baits at the time was a Jitterbug slowly crawled on top of the water, often at night and it only worked when there wasn't any wind.
After reading some article in Bassmaster magazine about how great these lures were, I finally bought one and I've had occasional success with it over the years.
Jitterbug, and billed crank, safety pin spinnerbait, jig.
The senko.

Not surprise to Florida fisherman either. There are times when you can't buy a crappie jig, just sold out every where. It is one of the best lures for spanish mackerel, small jacks up to 2-3 #, snook are caught on them (while fishing for something else), they excel for peacock bass and blue tilapia. I've caught many bass with them, 5# not out of the question.
