Is the spray paint smell something that I should be concerned about....or do the fish not care?
No Worries.
Besides, once you Slather them up with Megastrike they will be ready to Rock & Roll . . .
A-Jay
I think it's more of a plasticy smell. Either way, a quick overnight soak in some scent should take care of it.
It's the release agent they use in the plastic injection machine so it doesn't stick to the mold in the die. Two shots of YUM covers it. It wears off anyway
Ok, my question was.....do I NEED to fix this? Meaning, are the fish deterred by this smell?
I always use a shot of scent anyways.
I don't think you will never catch a fish with them untreated, but I think you bite ratio will go down somewhat, but probably not by much.
I think it is apparent that you NEED to fix this.....whatever that means.
If you do NOT fix this, you will FOREVER wonder if you wouldn't have caught more bigger fish the day you used a spray-paint-smelling bait. You already have doubts...your mind is already toast about this and that's all that really matters.
ya don't let deep pondering on the role of artificial scent agents drive you to your last wit on your quest for the elusive bass.
You guys are no help.
Im gonna go with NO the fish are not deterred.
I've never felt like it did anything. Just fish it as it.
ive heard of guys using wd40 for scent. you should be fine

No. The baits that have the strongest chemical/spray paint in my whole box I also have the most success with.
That said, I always use Megastrike.

This is my philosophy with scents. You are scared that the "unnatural" smell of plastic will spook fish so you use scent to mask the "unnatural" smell. Since when is the smell of garlic, which is in almost all scents, found in nature. It is just as unnatural as is the smell of plastic. Scents really are just used to boost your confidence IMO.
I'm holding out for lasagna scent...

It blows my mind nobody has bacon scent. I'm borderline insulted haha
Just my opinion but yes, I think a strong paint smell can deter a fish from striking if the fish is following and is interested in the bait from a feeding perspective. On the other hand, if it's a reflexive reaction strike, then probably not. But only the bass know for sure and they aren't talking.

IIRC, we did discuss this with Bobby U. I had been seriously considering dipping some worms in the can of bacon grease on the counter. Pretty sure Bobby said that something scientific about the enzymes or amino something or other and convinced me that it would be a waste of time and bacon grease.

I think the science of that likely emanates from profit margins haha... I have no reason to believe that natural fats and smoke salts wouldn't activate receptors in a fashion similar to what the salts in every bait nowadays does. I'm not trying to say Megastrike isn't a great product (I use it every time I fish), I'm just saying that fish never went to science class, and bacon grease is both salty, fatty and greasy... Not to mention freakin' delicious.
If coffee and garlic seem to work, I can't imagine bacon at least not being worth a try, although I don't know if I would want to waste the bacon grease on anything other than my stomach
Ugh, fake garlic smell just hurts my insides. I love to cook with real garlic so the Lego garlic smell just strikes me as next-level gross. It's not at all like real garlic.
