So this is my first foray into the world of hard swimbaits. Spro BBZ-1 4" Shad in Killer Gill. The primary prey fish on this lake are Bluegill and Redear Sunfish. I've got to tell you, d**n this thing is fun to fish. Pulled 6 largemouth all in the 2-3 pound range along with three peacocks up to 3.5 pounds in about an hour. What a an absolutely fun bait to use. I was throwing the slow sink version over a point, letting it drop to the 5-7 foot range and slowly retrieving it with twitches every couple of cranks. I watched one Peacock hit it three times before he took it in after I dead sticked it. Just awesome watching that.
I'm certain I could have caught several more fish closer to the bottom. I'll be picking up the fast sink later today for that. A fluoro leader would probably have helped the sink rate a bit, but I really don't have any heavier leader material sitting around right now to use. I didn't want to accidentally break off a $20 dollar lure the first time out using it.
Highly recommend the lure. Good fun. I think I've found a new addiction....

Glad you caught some on the bait. For some reason, I can't catch a cold with the BBZ 4"
It looks great in the water and the swimming action is very fluid, but it just doesnt work for me. :-?
I have two distinct issues with the bait. First, casting this bait SUCKS as it will "helicopter" on numerous casts. Second, the addition of a second hook would be very nice.
Welcome to the SB world.
I didn't have much issue casting it. Although, there is a very, very strong wind today. So I may not be noticing it. Once the weather calms down I'll see then. A second hook would definitely be welcome. I may add one myself. I had several strikes earlier that probably would have been catches if there was a hook on the rear of the bait. I love how you can twitch this thing and it'll pull a 360.

I had the EXACT same experience with this bait. In fact, if it weren't for the fish I caught following it up with a Sebile Magic Swimmer, I probably would never ventured into the realm of real swimbaits.
ive always wondered about those smaller SB's and the peas. i kinda figured they would take it , but now we know for sure. the baby shad is looking nicer too..
good stuff.

You DONT need 2 hooks on a 4 inch bait unless you wanna kill fish.
My BBZ shad casted fine when i fished it. I dont fish baits that small anymore or i would be fishing it.
I was going to get the Sebile, but oupted out to get a storm swimbait. I think for $10 it swims great. But I haven't been able to use it to catch anything yet.

Weird I've never had any problems casting this bait. Actually its one of the farthest casting swimbaits I own because of its density.
Also, every single fish that takes this lure gets hooked. I'm not saying that it isn't possible to get short biters, but 99% of the time in my experience they hook themselves eagerly. Hardly a situation where a trailer hook is needed.
I also own this bait in Killer Gill and it caught me my PB in my home state. I also own the Blueback Herring color. Slow sink is my fav.
The 6 inch has two hooks on it with a longer body.
The 4 inch casts like a kite. I have two of them, and honestly they sit in the box all day. Will probably unload them this winter, pretty disappointed. The 6 inch on the other hand...
The slow sink shad is just 7/8 oz, and the fast sink 1 oz. That isn't very dense for a 4" bait. Most other similar sized baits are at least 1.5 oz, and heavier. Horrible in the wind, and wind is where you want to be with this bait. Gave all mine away.
Darn, I just got one from TW today. I'll give it a try and see for myself... :-?

Let me know how that goes if you will. I havn't touched anything as of yet with either the 4" or 6" version. Could just be me though :-/

Keep throwing that 6.
I wonder if I can't get the Pike to hit this thing?
It is a good looking bait. I probably need to give swimbaits more effort :

You definitely can.
I'm not a fan of the 4", but the 6" BBZ-1 has done well for me AND I plan on throwing the 8" next year. I suggest the 5" Tru Tungsten for those who didn't care for the SPRO.
I have tried the BBZ-1 4" shad for pike while in Canada and was disappointed with it. I did much better with hard jerkbaits like lc pointer 100's & 128'sQuoteRussBert wrote "I wonder if I can get the Pike to hit this thing?"

Mansfield Hollow, here we come!
I am a much bigger fan of the 6in bait. With that said the 4in bait has its place. As far as casting well... It soars through the air when it does not cartwheel. I takes some practice to prevent this. A deep cranking rod works well. It allows the bait to load the rod up when making a cast, aiding in a tail first flight. most people try to throw this bait on a rod that is to heavy. It is similar to casting a deep little N. Once you figure out the sweet spot it will fly.
Man all you guys keep saying bad things about the 4". I own both the 6" and the 4" and I've caught way more fish on the 4". That may just be a result of where I live and fish, but I'm going to try and fish that 6" a little more and see if I can get some bigguns.
Oh and I also own the Tru Tungsten 4" and again the Spro 4" beats it for me. But I do like the fact that I can change the sink rate on the Tru Tungsten.
Good luck out at Mansfield Hollow Russbert!

Sorry for the jack, but what kind of leader were you using with the Pointers?
fc and titanium.
Quotefc and titanium.
I concur. I'll add in Cortland Toothy Critter for jigging and t-rigging for pike.

Did you go over 50lb fluoro for the large bass baits?
Agreed, Cortland is the stuff for jigs and plastics.

Don't know what Dwight is doing, but I start at 60#. Go over 80#, and the strength is overshadowed by the negative effect on the action. Need more, go to titanium. The stuff is pricey, but really thin, flexible, and durable. Don't overlook the Bucher short wire jerkbait leaders. Some guys make them, but they're so cheap, I just buy a bunch.
