The Darkside ~ Deep Cranking :c) 2025

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Tried as I may, I could not hold out any longer.

I broke down and took the plunge.

Next season will undoubtedly include many stories centering around lost, damaged and out of tune baits. ~ And hopefully a few Fat Bass.

Though I do realize that this is barely a Started Kit,

I will Not be passing this information on to The Mrs.

Come on Spring !

WOW - that ought to get you started for sure!

I see a reel - do you have your deep crankin' rod yet?

fishing user avatarflippin and pitchin reply :

Very nice A-Jay. May I suggest a plug knocker ? Great selection of baits. You will love it. Get on the right ledge or hump and " Thwonnnngggggg." Then comes that big head shake and the surge...you gain some line and the rod tips bends and the surge is so strong you drop the tip to the water and then lift and gain a little more line. More surges, more line and then their she is, all 1.72 pounds of massive catfish. Deep crankin' baby...that's what i'm about.

I do - I have a couple, one is a Kistler Graphite Plus 7 footer

http://www.tackletou...rcrankbait.html

and the other one I just picked up is a Quantum Paul Elias Signature series rod.

I have not fished it yet but it's advertised to have a very soft tip and forgiving action that's comparable to E-Glass, but with the light weight of graphite. It's specifically suited for fishing open-water structure using deep-diving crankbaits.

- Let the Kneeing & Reeling begin !

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

You got the good ones front and center, brother. If I could fish only one deep cranak, it would be a Little John DD in Spooky Nasty.

Oh, and you're boned. A friend I fish with a lot made a comment the other day that when he was looking through pictures the other day, he only found five or six that I didn't have a crank-stick in my hands.

fishing user avatartnbassfisher reply :

Good looking cranks! I love the Spros and I'm jealous of the LCs

That actually sounds pretty good! A quick story of my last deep-crankin' fish before I put the boat up for the season. Little lake had me stumped - couldn't find the fish shallow, nor at mid-depth. Couldn't find them on the points. I go out to the middle of the lake - about 20 fow where I was and see on the sonar a little hump about 2 feet higher than the surrounding water. I tie on a Mann's 20+ and crank it down and promptly hang it up on the 18 ft hump - out comes the plug knocker and I get the Mann's back. Then I keep cranking around that hump and, finally, FISH ON ! The fish is no match for my 7'6"MH cranking rod - get that baby up to the surface and it's a genuine largemouth bass.........all 12" of it !

That's funny stuff right there! I did almost exactly that this last summer. I found a hump that topped out at 9' out of 18' with a rockpile and some brush on top, perfect cranking spot. I'd never tried deep cranking this lake so I thought that would be the perfect place to start. First cast I hit bottom, paused, and got hammered! After a pretty lengthy fight that included some drag peeling I finally swung my 2 pound channel cat into the boat. I had one other bite all day deep cranking, and it was a dink.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Wow, even I don't carry that much deep cranking gear. All of what you have there gets bit. Have fun with it man!

Heh, we emptied my rig before a tournament on Wheeler last year and decided to weigh what I had in there. I had 65 pounds of deep cranks, compared to a total of 120 pounds of everything else including plastics, spoons, and spinnerbaits.

fishing user avatarVinny Chase reply :

Hooligan, that is exactly how I am! Haha I have so many DD22's it is just sick.

A-Jay, you are going to like the darkside ;)

I'm pretty much on a three color kick. Since I only fish certain baits, it keeps my boat inventory down. I also fish in partners tournaments in the back of my buddy's boat, so I have a couple more 3700's packed to the gills. And then there's the man cave inventory....some of those baits might never see daylight, unless the price is right.

The beauty of cranking, unless some slimy gator steals it, you can catch and catch and catch on the same crank. As long as you have a dupe of your favorite pattern, you should be good. With less expensive baits, that might mean buying a few to get a couple that work exactly the same.

When I was a kid, I loathed spending my $3/hour minimum wages on plastics. One $5 crank could last me the whole summer, but a $3 bag Culprits might only last the morning.

fishing user avatarbigbassctchr101 reply :

I love the Spro's as well. Way better than the Lucky Craft's. But they LC's do have your time and place. I just wish the Spro's came in a couple of the DD22 colors. They are awesome baits.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Nice!! JMHO.....if it's not too late take the LC's back and get more Spros and Strike Kings. They catch the heck out of them for a lot less $$. There are a couple of colors in those Strike King XD's your going to want duplicates of.....trust me.

Yea, not really not going to return the LCs.

We all have our favorites.

I noticed the photo in your avatar. It looks like a solitary mind in deep contemplation. It's almost spiritual. A mere being asking one of two life changing questions. What is the center of the universe ??? What color of DD22 do I order first? Oh and what the heck is a plug knocker ? Sorry A-jay, i'm overdosed on Nyquil.

OK - hope you feel better.

If you must know - That was a very good but long day - I may have actually nodded off right there . . .

A-Jay you might want to add a travel case to the rest of the new gear. The darkside must be mobile.

fishing user avatarKevinator1 reply :

oh man, deep cranking is my favorite topic. Here in Indiana my 2 biggest bass came off of deep cranks. Bomber FF Shad and a Bandit 700 series. I have just about every brand and color of deep cranks. Way too many to ever use them all. I guess we all love the bait monkey.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

Oh, man, that reminds me- You gotta get your hands on some of the new Bomber Deep Fat Frees. They're a 22' bait at only 3/4 ounce. I'm very, very impressed with them.

fishing user avatarlmoore reply :

Well, I've been thinking I needed to get back to more cranking this coming summer and debating on ordering some new deep cranks. I tookone look at that collection and noticed my hand was no longer in my control as I brough up another IE window and started typing "www.bassp..." I blame you guys for what happens next :P

fishing user avatarzip pow reply :

I love fishing crankbaits and the deeper the better most folks go ripping down the river looking over at you in the middle of the river wondering what in the world your fishing that's what I love

fishing user avatarNoBassPro reply :

I like throwing them but usually go about 50/50 bass to pike on them around here
