I'm familiar with it but I've never tried it. Rumor is several big pro tournaments have been won in the US over the past 5 years using that technique but they never let the cat out of the bag. It sounds like a good technique to try, something the fish probably haven't ever seen.

I thought it was interesting that he suggested to fish it on 4-5 lb floro and said 6lb was too heavy. 6 lb is as light as I have ever thrown !

Of course they don't. The tips we get now work but have been used exclusively up until now. They are very hush hush on a lot of their techniques. I read that Ish will go to Japan in his off season and spend $1500 on gear you can't get over here. All I hear him talk about are frogs and D-bombing.

Try Yo-Zuri Hybrid #4, .009 diameter, 8.5 lb breaking strength.
I brlieve the line is MUCH stronger. The fish in my avatar were
caught on #4 Hybrid as well as this fish on the RoadTrip last year:

I'm guess this guy is fishing in Japan. I've read a couple of articles that said Japans bass fishing pressure is like 10x the amount we have in America which forces them to fish with finesse type baits and very low pound test line which may be the reason why they suggested 4-6lb test.

Primus, the Japanese are famous for using light line.
They will go to 2-pound test for a drop shot.
I have some 2-pound and 4-pound test to use one day on a drop shot rig.
Right now I have one spinning rig with 4-pound test for a special presentation that I am trying to see how it works.
So to read that the technique calls for 4-pound test is understandable coming from the Asians.

I have heard that as well, that said it still blows my mind that they would fish a 3/8 oz hardbait with 4lb test.

So what exactly is the definition of spybaiting? Is that the slow rolling of bait bit off from the bottom? If so I do that with other baits like hollow berries.

Most of those in the southern U.S. will not have a use for that technique because it is a clear water technique only. I look at it as a super finesse type of jerkbait approach but even jerkbaits have more vibration and sound so while it does require clear water it doesn't have to be crystal clear like this seems to require. If you saw the lures used for that in videos it is quickly realized why the clear water is essential to it, sort or reminds me of the "I-motion" thing Jackall brought over here that hasn't taken off as it too requires clear water the likes of which we don't often and when we do other techniques like suspending jerkbaits, work much better. In places like Minnesota, Vermont, Maine, and North Dakota it will be something to use but for a lot of us our waters are too stained, I'm betting the spy-baiting technique would be killer in the Great Lakes.

I had one of the Realis Spinbaits, the one in the video. It is such a small bait, it doesnt fit into what I like to throw. It's literally the size of 2 toothpicks in width.

This is a pretty fun technique, I just got to try it for the first time this weekend and caught a nice on on it. I did a video on my experiences and thoughts on it if you are interested.

Fluorocarbon line is generally equal to premium mono or copolymer line in diameter and line diameter is what the fish see, they can't read labels.
The following are Sunline FC line diameters that I use for comparison to other brands.
2# = .0050
4#= .0065
6#= .0075
8#= .0093
10#=.0102
12#=..0112
14#=. 0122
16#= .0130
20#= .0148
When making comparisons to line strength verses advertised or label # test, compare apples to apples.
Line makers who label their line 4# test that have a diameter greater than 6# test is common practice today because they can claim the line is stronger and it should be because it is 6+# test labeled 4#.

Sorry I didn't post sooner but I'm catching up a little. If I may ask what type of line along with rod/reel combo did you use and do you agree with the light (4 lb ) line recommendation that the japanese fisherman apparantly use ? Thanks

I was using a 15lb braid main line with 8lb Seaguar Tatsu leader. Like WRB said above, it all comes down to diameter. The 8lb Tatsu has a diameter of .009, while a few other leading brands 6lb test is larger at .010. Take a look at the diameters sometime, it's pretty shocking how different they are. I use a 25ft-30ft fluoro leader to keep the braid from floating too high and impacting the bait's action. I'm planning on trying it with straight 6lb fluoro as well to see how it performs.
I found that a 7' ML is about perfect for this technique and you can cast it very, very far when you have a rod that light matched with braid. The bait itself is a little rocket, even in the wind. I use a Shimano Sustain reel but really any reel with a good drag will suffice. With that line and chance at big fish, the drag is crucial.
I'm still learning it and have only used it one trip, so I'm sure I will learn the intricacies more each time out.

Thanks for sharing your set-up info and lure observations, I've also have become a fan of braided line with floro leaders when fishing with spinning rods.

I am trying to come up with something different for our summertime clear water bass. Alot of this makes sense to me as I generally drop line size or lure size when the bite gets tough. How would this tactic work with a weighted jerkbait or weighed senko?
