Swivel On A whopper Plopper? 2025

fishing user avatarghost reply :

Don't recall where I read this on this site, but does this help that it keeps the WP from spinning while reeled in?

Any idea if this will help with the 90 from submerging?

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

If anything I would think the slightly extra weight at the nose of the 90 would make it submerge more. A swivel is going to rotate with the bait, so it probably wouldn't help that. Just a snap might help the cause.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I may be misunderstanding...does your entire Whopper Popper spin?  And it goes under water?  If so, I suspect your going to need more than a swivel.  Each of those conditions are a long, long way from anything I've seen mine do.

fishing user avatarghost reply :

I read that it has a tendency to spin when reeled in and adding a swivel helps with line twist. I've only used my 90 ad 130 at night so far, so I really can't see if it spins even some when reeled in.

The 90 is do notice submerge when I start reeling. I have the rod tip high and I have to pop it at times to bring it to the surface. I think that's I he rent with the 90.

The 130 should not be spinning at all unless something is caught between the main body and the tail, causing interference to the tail rotating by itself, the 90's body tends to spin if reeled too fast. A swivel will help with line twist, but that is just because the swivel is rotating instead of your line, it does not actually stop the rotation of the lure from happening. You could try stepping down a hook/split ring size to make it sit a tiny bit higher in the water but I'm not sure how much that will realistically help.

fishing user avatarking fisher reply :

I bought two 90.s.  One sank and the other didn't.  Caught lots of fish on the one that didn't sink.  Threw the one that sank away.  Only time mine would spin was when I fished it very fast.  Was catching more fish with a slower retrieve, so I didn't have a problem.  I did try a small swivel, and it worked fine.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

The 90 size trend to submerger more than 130 size. Normally I either use mono/hybrid or braid line for this type of lure, no FC needed. Also when reel back I will lift the rod high at first to help lifting the line out of water or reel as fast as possible to get rid of slack line when lure hit water.

Only time the body of 90 size spin for me is when the tail hook snack on something.

I do use snap (not the whole swivel with snap) sometime when I know Im gonna change different type of lure on the same reel, but never with 130 size(I trust my knot more than those little snap I got).

fishing user avatarTheRodFather reply :

I have been having good success by pointing the rod tip right at the bait just before it hits the water, then when it hits, raising the rod to get it up on the surface and start reeling if I need to get back to 10 o'clock to be ready for the blowup.

I fish it on 12lb mono.

fishing user avatarj bab reply :

Ghost are you using fluoro?

fishing user avatarOnvacation reply :

Are you maybe thinking of some people adding a split ring?

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

I've fished size 90 Whopper Ploppers with and without swivels.  I find the swivel weighs down the nose and causes the WP to submerge unless my  rod tip is high.

fishing user avatarghost reply :

I used 40lb braid, gonna drop down to 30lb braid, see if that helps keep the nose up on the 90

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

Had to modify both my 90's  There is a way to correct the spin and have it run a little better.

#1 Use the smallest swivel you can on the nose attached to the splitring of the bait.  This will help line twist for sure.

#2 Replace the back hook and forward hooks.  I used a #6 on the back and a #4 on the front.  This lets the bait rise faster as it makes the back a bit lighter.  Also the #4 hook and also have added a small split ring to help "Keel" the bait and keep it running correct. These small things have helped me cure the issues you are having.  BTW, the hooks on the bait are Mustad Ultrapoint KVD 1X Short 2X Strong hooks.

Does anyone even catch fish with this lure?  I threw mine away after a few tries.

Looking around in my tackle bin, looks like they were Berkley McManhon swivel in a size 10 which is a 40lb swivel.  Might have even been the next size down, but definately not the next size up.

I just bought my first WP 90. Went to a 5 acre reservoir I've never fished before. 1/2 lily pads and matted grass and 1/2 submerged grass. Fished 2 hrs. Without a nibble.  Unpacked the WP 90 and tied directly to my 50 lb. braid. Made a fifty foot cast and reeled it in. 3 ft. From me the water exploded on the first cast. WP 90 got SWALLOWED!!!  They work.

Nice! Have you tried the 75 size? Or the 110? Both much better than the 90 IMO.

fishing user avatartoadhead reply :

I have purchased several Whopper Ploppers, mainly the larger ones but hadn't had real success until recently. Ironically I found a Whopper Plopper that someone lost in some brush.  I was able to retrieve it and surprisingly it's been the most productive lure I have owned for topwater.  Not sure if it's the size, the color (Blue Blood) or what the fish just eat this thing up.  I caught 16 largemouth bass on it in about a 4 hour span including this double catch using this lure...so I just placed an order for several versions of the 90 including a couple of the Blue Blood

Also noting that I was casting along brushline and tree stumps, water temp was 73 degrees, water was clear to slightly stained with slight chop; slightly overcast (morning); I added a split ring (not a swivel) and tie directly to the split ring; I have 15 lb. fluorocarbon line but may opt for braid especially if I am working with larger WP's.

what makes the 75/110 better?  I know the 75 shape is a different.

I have a loon 90 i was considering a bone color and now wondering if it should be a 75.

I use 90 in bone and works amazing. Caught mid 20 pike lots of SM and LM.

Same.

My 75 (loon and Shad) does not get nearly the amount of bites my 90 (bone) does. I found a WP 130 (bone) while fishing a week ago it's a huge bait! going to give it a try when the top water bite looks right again.

fishing user avatarPickle_Power reply :

Never fear the size of the 130.  I've gotten several medium sized bass on it.  I bought mine so I could "cross fish" for bass and muskie in my local lake.

Pike too!!

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

I've not tried it (switched to braid outfit when using "the plopper") but If I WAS confined to just mono, I'd use a swivel.  It DID cause line twist with my mono.

They have stocked muskies pretty aggressively in this lake but I don't think it could sustain pike.  Sorry that this is not on the topic.

That's awesome!

75 is my favorite followed by the 110.
