im about to place my order this friday and im completely amped!!!!!!!
definetley purchasing a mattlures hard gill (among other things)....but im torn on colors......(floating model)
male bluegill......or red ear sunfish....
honestly, they all look so amazing im sure it wont matter...but thats the dilemma im in....
what are your thoughts...............
i will go with the consensus!!!!!
well does the lake you fish have blue gill or red ear sunfish? If both, which species is dominant?
ive seen both in my "main" fishing spot.....
but bluegill seem to be more common for the all around....although my other spots have good populations of sunfish, so......
its a hard choice.......their sooooooooo perfect..... i wish i had money for both!!!!
Personaly i'd shop around look for cheaper swimbaits that look just as good @ 1/2 the price, their out there.I'd check swimbaitnation.com or tackleunderground.com.They always got guys on both sites willing to offer sellers or make baits for you personaly.
you wont find a bluegill bait that looks better than matts or swims better it is well worth the money. be sure to look on matts site he has some colors not offered on other sites like tw.
-ebby-
good tip......i was looking at TW....
i didnt know that there were more varieties directly from mattlures...
i might have more of a problem now.....
(but the mattlures hard gill is my only choice in hard swimbaits, by far..)
i just saw the mattlures site.......
there are more varieties by far.....
but im still torn on the original two :-/

I would definitely be willing to pay more to a guy who is a contributing member of this site than someone else.
i hear you dan and can agree, just pointing out that there are options out there for ppl who are on a budget or cant afford certain things thats all.

matts don't just look good they perform and catch fish, customs are options to but i haven't seen any that look as good as his for the same price or less there are some good ones and yes i have seen many customs that are great but nothing compares. If you have found some that are close i would like to see them because im always looking for a good lure.
Why not the female bg..?
Quotemale bluegill.problem solved. your welcome ;D
Thanks for the kind words fellas. Any time I choose a color for using a swimbait I try to think about where I will be fishing it the most and which forage species is the most common or which ones the bass feed on more. Choosing betwwen sunfish species where both are present can make it a tough choice.
Fishdontlikeme can you post a picture of this bait ?
Matt, please check your PM's..
no digi camera sorry, but check these out, they look promising and cheap

the orange breast.
I will say this, I think those Castaic rock hard shad look realy good. and I have played with them at Icast. I think they will beat all the little hard shad baits.
those baits are truely spectacular to say the least , the female and male are my choices , yeah i'm gonna get both , in floating AND sinking models !!!! but i think bass have the tendancy to be more aggressive towards the males . i some times fish with bluegills (live) and i always try to catch big males and they seem to really try to crush them .
Ordering mine tomorrow..
i don't know about that tail hook placement , looks kinda iffy to me . i couldn't imagine haulin a double digit bass to the shore or boat by that hook.Quoteno digi camera sorry, but check these out, they look promising and cheaphttp://www.castaicswimbait.com/Products/Rock-Hard-Swimbaits/
I'm sure Randall will be along shortly to share some recent stories about all the blowups he gets fishing the male bluegill floater
Bluegill pattern.

My vote goes for tilapia. Not only is this a killer looking bait our lakes are also chock full of them. They are a very high protein food.
Definately see the dilema here.I am in the same boat. The bluegill baits will have their time and place as will the crappie color during the spawn. I say you spin a wheel and buy it.
8-)

Now that is funny.
This
(what's the deal with that little treble coming off the tail?)
looks nothing like this
well.......thanx to all.....
MALE BLUEGILL it is........... i cant wait... gonna put the order in tomorrow night(1 day ahead of schedule)......
now the agony of anticipation begins....
My floaters are all male bluegills since I fish the floaters during the spawn and warmer months and from what I have seen there are more male bluegills shallow during this time. When the crappie were spawning I did much better on the crappie bait and I did throw the female bluegill and shellcracker as well during this time but they didn't do as well as the crappie. So, if you see crappie throw the crappie. Just from what I have seen as far as throwing the male vs. the female bluegill is the fish think both are a live bluegill and will eat either.
Where I fish most bluegills are the number one diet item when stomach samples are taken by our DNR. Bluegills are my number one swimbait choice most of the year. I could buy any bluegill swimbaits on the market and am always searching for something that does something a little different or better and have fished most of what's out there at one time or another. I have a lot of my guide service clients who don't want to spend a lot of money on swimbaits and try to substitute another lower price bait when I suggest they buy one of Matts before the trip if they are serious about catching a big bass. After seeing both in the water and watching the bass react to both baits they soon realize they should have just spent the money on Matt's baits. If I am trying to catch one of the biggest bass in the lake or trying to get bites in tough conditions I want the best swimbait I can get. A price difference to me don't really matter anymore after you see a giant bass turn away from your bait because something don't look right.
