Spro BBZ1 Rat Lure color? 2025

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Okay, think I've decided to splurge a little and get one of these rat lures in the 40 size (1oz.), now my question is what color should I get...Brown/White, Grey/White or Morning Dawn? My initial instinct says either Brow or Grey with a slight preference towards Brown as that's what color most mice are where i live BUT...I've seen many reviews with people raving about the Morning Dawn color, it doesn't make sense to me as I've never seen a purple mouse with bright yellow tail before but it's not just one or two reviews saying this color slays them but several reviews. I tend to do more evening fishing than morning fishing. Which color would you/do you prefer and why?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I'd get a Mini Slammer in Black.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

Use whatever gives you the most confidence.  If you look up at a bait from underwater all you see is a black silhouette since the light source is behind it.  Maybe in clear water you can differentiate a black vs white belly, but anything on top above the water, the fish will never see.

fishing user avatarWestBranch reply :

I haveit in dawn and brown.

I catch the most with the dawn, by a wide margin

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

I don't mean to sound disrespectful but gosh, those mini slammers look like a toy made for children. I mean they have no features other than the swivel part, tail and eyes, it certainly doesn't look like a rat or mouse. The Spro rat really looks like a mouse/rat. I could be way off on this and I'm sure that the slammer catches fish and I'm probably not making the right choice but I can't bring myself to pay over $30 for two little pieces of wood with a hinge in the middle. Now if it didn't cost $30 and was like $10 than I'd give it a try. This may be a case of the looks of the lure catching the fisherman and not necessarily the fish. If I could find a used mini slammer and try it out maybe I'd be sold by the results.

I wish more thought like this, lol.  More big fish for me.  Slammer is legit.  I sold a few this past year for around $25.  You can save your pennies, and keep a look out for some on the cheap, or buy plastic rat.  You'll catch some, it's a good bait, but it isn't even in the same league.

I got the grey ghost, but I have yet to get a bite on the thing.

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I like the brown, if I had to get another it would be black, but some people also swear by morning dawn.

Why not Google search MS Slammer fish? The rat looks more like a toy to me and I own 2 rats and 2 Slammers. The Slammer gets bit way better than the rat for me even though they both do relatively the same thing. I've got dozens of pictures of Slammer fish I've caught from the many well known big bass lakes in Kansas (heavy sarcasm). If they catch fish here they'll catch them anywhere.

Yes the slammer is the real deal. I've caught fish on the rat, but the slammer seems to get me the big girls more often. I know it doesn't look like much, but then again I caught 18 on a methiolate (orange) colored trick worm in an hour and a half this morning and I have no clue what it's supposed to look like

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Okay, I have put the Mini Slammer on the list for next season...maybe a Christmas present as I've called about it and Mike is running almost 2 months behind schedule filling orders but for this upcoming Fall season which will be starting in a couple of weeks for us here in the North the Spro Rat is going to be the choice so now I just need to get a consensus on which color would work best for me in my area where the mice found are generally a dark gray-ish brown (mostly brown though)...Brown, Gray or Dawn?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Black Beauty and Black and Yellow are the two I throw.  BTW, the tail is easily replaceable with some glue and a trick worm.  Sometimes I put a pink tail on the Black Beauty, other times a blue/black tail.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Hippie rat (morning dawn), has caught all my rat fish but 2.

But when do you fish it? I do most of my fishing in the evenings, wouldn't a darker color like the brown be better (it also matches the local forage as our mice are brown) than a brighter color like the purple/yellow?

All times of day. It's the commotion and vibration that attracts them the most.

So if that's the case why does the Morning Dawn color seem to catch more fish than the other colors? I always thought matching the forage was the best choice but I've never seen a bright purple mouse before :hahaha-024:.

I live by the rule that the only stupid question is the one not asked ;). I'm trying to be a sponge and soak up some knowledge from people who have been doing this a lot longer than me...most of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't but I'll never know if I don't ask!!!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Unless you have the tackle for the original size BBZ rat (50) I wouldn't bother with the smaller sizes. The black color rat works good.

Tom

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

I decided to go with the Brown color and I actually went with the size 30 instead as they are much closer to the size of our mice so it'll be a natural looking bait to the fish. Thanks to all who replied!!!

I actually lol'd at this.

The slammer is a proven hand made bait verse some injection molded piece of plastic. I think my 9" slammer had a date of 04 on it.  That was $55 well spent if you divide it by 4,380 days.

fishing user avatarbigbassin' reply :

I do pretty good on the brown, it's actually my top producing number and size lure this year, and I throw it way less than jigs and trigs so it's not a confirmation bias thing.

On a side note, the bait monkey may get a new slammer with how much hype y'all have put into it.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

I'm guessing the Morning Dawn is being reported as getting more strikes because it's being thrown more often.  Compared to all of the Spro rats it's definitely the prettiest, and most likely the one fisherman will keep throwing hoping to get a fish on.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Same reason "watermelon" is the most useful color.  I don't think I've ever thrown that color, lol.

My black rat has way more hours on it, and way fewer fish.

fishing user avataronetime reply :

I use the brown in a size 40, I'll get the morning dawn since it looks cool lol

fishing user avatarCrankinstein reply :

I guess I'm the minority here but I like the white one. Then again white or bone has just been a solid color for my local lake whether its a rat/walker/popper style topwater. I would go for whatever gives you the most confidence though because as mentioned before color isn't as big of a deal for topwater baits as it is for others. I think the action more than anything is the key.
