"senko" or knockoff setup 2025

fishing user avatarBassin 24-7 reply :

I want to know EXACTLY what you guys and/or gals use for senkos. I use a 6'6" medium casting rod with 8lb mono. I am currently using a 3/0 Owner® Down Shot Offset Hook - Model 5133 with good success. I am looking at other alternatives. I bought a bulk set of  Gamakatsu® EWG Worm Hooks but I found that they were to heavy for the senko. I need a relitavly  cheap alternative to the Owners. Im looking for a good quality light wire hook at a good price and also an alternate setup to the one I am using.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

I use a 6'6" MH spinning rod and 12lb SilverThread line.  Hook is a Gammy G-Lok.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The GYCB Senko has been my #1 bait for most of the last ten years. I quit fishing the 5" version a few years ago, experimented with 7" and have settled on the 6" model. I fish all soft plastics almost exclusively on spinning tackle, specifically:

St. Croix Legend Elite ES70MF

Shimano Stella 2500FB

Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #4 & #6

Gamakatsu or X-Point 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks

A 7 Foot B&R Outlaw rod Medium power with a shimano chronarch MG50 is a match made in heaven for throwing weightless senkos.  I use 8 lb Seaguar Carbon Pro.

I use circle hooks for senkos if I'm wacky rigging.

If I'm texas rigging I'll use a 1/0 Owner EWG.

6ft 10in All Star American Classic MH and Shimano Curado Bantam Cu-200 6:2:1 with 17lb test Sufix Siege with a 3/0 or 4/0 Gammy G-lock. I am not real crazy about the Gary Yamamoto Senko so I use the Strike King 3X Zero. Usually the Yamamoto Senko will only last for like one fish but with the 3X stuf I can catch 10-20 bass on one bait.

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

7' BPS Extreme Medium

Shimano Stradic 2500

Yo Zuri Ultra Soft 6#

Gamakatsu 2/0 wide gap finese hooks

and three bags of *** 5" ***!  :D

fishing user avatarAAA reply :

I use BPS Stik-O's 5" with G-Loomis MH 6' Curado 201B Ande backcountry 12#, BPS XPS SuperLock hook 4/0. For finesse fishing I use BPS Stik-O 4" with St. Croix spinning rod M fast action and Sahara 2500 8# Berkley Vanish, BPS XPS Superlock hook 2/0.

Senkos are good but more expensive, Stik-O works fine, the only difference with Senko is the price. Bass doesn't check the brand of the lures!!!

fishing user avatarRattlinrogue reply :

I use a 6'6 Lightning rod(spinning),a Shimano spinning reel,10 lb Berkley Vanish fishing line,and a 3'0 Lazer Sharp hook.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

If I fish them weigthless I use a Quantum Energy Pti-a 20 on a St. Croix Avid ML 6' or a M 6'6'' with 6lb YoZuri or 6lb P-line Floroclear and a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG.

If I fish them weighted I use a Shimano Calcutta 251 with a G. loomis MBR803, 14lb Gamma Copolymer, 3/16oz bullet weight and a 4/0 Gamakastu EWG.

Occasionally when I'm in heavy cover, I will use a Shimano Calais 201A on a G. Loomis MBR783 with 50lb PowerPro, 1/4oz bullet weight and again the 4/0 EWG.

Do you not find the 4/0 gammy EWG a little too heavy and thick for a weightless senko presentation?

No, not really. I fish a pond that is the overflow of the local waste treatment plant and the water is absolutely pure and clear. You can watch a senko fall and twitch back and forth on a retrieve. There seems to be no problem with the the fall and action that the 4/0 EWG causes. It is, IMHO, the perfect fit for a 5in or 6in senko, dinger or whatever cigar plastic you use.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Different size hooks control different fall rates.  smaller-slower, heavier-faster

For wacky rigging, we use 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0 depending on how fast you want it to drop.

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

7' MH Johnny Morris rod, Energy PT 7:1 reel, 12lb test Transition line and a 5/0 Gammy EWG hook for both 5" and 6" Senkos. I'll go down to as small as a 3/0 EWG for a slower fall rate.

For 4" senkos, I use a 6'9" ML BPS Pro Finesse rod , Johhny Morris reel, 10lb test XL and a 2/0 Gammy EWG hook. The 4" senko is a completely different bait than the 5" or 6". It's more like a Fluke than a Senko. Very little of the trademark wiggle, and a lot more glide. I 've almost quit fishing a Fluke since I started using the 4" senko.

I find myself moving away from the Gammy's and more toward the Owner hooks. I like the Sugoi's also, but they can be hard to find around here. I have to order them.

Cheers,

GK

7ft. Quest IM 7 MH fast (don't laugh about Quest i have 2 GLommis customs but the Quest is the best rod I have ever fished with light and very sensitive)

Curado 200

17 lb fluorocarbon ( p line or vanish )

Gammy # 4  skip gap hooks

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

Based on an article by Gary Yamamoto that I read two years ago I switched from medium baitcasting and mono to spinning gear with braided line for Senko fishing.

My dedicated Senko rig is a 6'6" MH spinning rod with a Shimano Symetre 4000 reel; the line is 20# Power Pro braid (6# diameter) with a swivel and a mono or fluro leader about 18" long and a 3/0 Gammy EWG hook. The hooksets are great and I can't remember the last time I lost a fish.

I hardly ever use any size other than 5" Senkos, and my favorite colors, in order, are watermelon with black and red flake, watermelon with black flake (watermelon pepper), smoke pearl blue, junebug (purple with emerald flake) and black.

I fish in clear natural lakes in northern Indiana.

fishing user avatarfivesixone reply :

4/0 Gamakatsu EWG worm hooks are where it's at! I've found these to be THE best hooks for a 5" senko. Watermelon/black flake catches fish anywhere. I also prefer spinning gear fishing most soft plastics.

fishing user avatarfathom reply :

bcr803 glx

steez 103

15# trilene 100%

3/0 gammie ewg superline on the 4", 6/0 gammie ewg superline on the 5".

fishing user avatarjimmieO reply :

pinnacle solene reel-relatively cheap (50 brand new, 15-20 on ebay)and I have found it to be awesome for light lures

6'6" quantum tenacity M action rod

Instead of senko, I use Kinami, made by the same folks, but cheaper

I wouldn't use anything but an owner or gamakatsu 2/0 or 3/0 straight shank worm hook. I've bought some cheaper hooks and have had big problems with them bending

I fish these almost exclusively on a drop shot rig, and i use different weighted split shots so that if the weight gets hung up, it can slide off without losing the entire rig

fishing user avatarwisturkeyhunter reply :

7' mh st.croix legend elite

I can't believe the amount of guys using spinning tackle and light line. I throw senkos and other plastics tight against cover and when a 6 pounder grabs hold I want to tail walk her arse right outta that cover.

The Kanami baits aren't cheaper, you just get less per bag for less money.

I use a Curado E7, G Loomis MBR783 GLX, and 12 lb. Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon. I'm going to try out Sunline Sniper FC this year and see if I like it.

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

I use a 7'MH BPS Extreme, Pflueger President 6740, 12lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid, and usually a 2/0-4/0 EWG.  I fish 5'' Wave Tiki Sticks, SK Zero's, ***, Kinami Flash, and Yum Dingers.  I only have one pack of Senkos and they are the 7''

fishing user avatarkms399 reply :

6'6 med-hvy st. croix avid spinning with a shimano symetry reel spooled with 14# suffix braid. 5 or 6 inch senko knockoffs with a 3/0-4/0 wide gap braid hook. run them texas rigged then when they get beat up i turn them around then i wacky rig them. you can really get some mileage out of them that way

fishing user avatarBassinBoy reply :

I use 7' St. Croix rod with a Revo SX and 12 Gamma Coplymeyer Line

For a hook I use a Gamakatsu G-Lock for my Yum Dinger

fishing user avatarsupreme reply :

older version Daiwa Capriciorn spinning reel with 10 lb. PowerPro braid no leader.

Eagle Claw or Gamakatsu circle Octopus hooks 3/0...4/0 (so they don't swallow them!!!)

I use *** 5" stick baits without a doubt.....

I have used GY, Kinami, Tiki stick, and Shaw Grigsby by SK, as well as "others". I went through them all last year and the best for value and catching power is ***......no joke.
