Anybody throw these? They look interesting. I love putting a grub on the scrounger heads, but havent tried the swim jig that Luck 'e' strike makes. I was thinking about getting one to fish at Kentucky lake and my local ponds in st louis, but dont know what size or color to start off with. Any suggestions? first thought was getting a 1/4 oz. chartreuse white, white, or sexy shad color and put a white rage craw on it for my trailer, but not sure. What do yall think?
i too have not thrown these yet but saw them in bass pro catalog and gotta say im thinkinkin bout pickin up a couple too for the price its a deal and offers an alternative to the chatterbait same action but no flash i like the watermelon and the purple pumpkin but as for your color selection ataris i guess it depends on what color the fish want where ur throwin cant go wrong with watermelon or pumpkin though as for a trailer yeah a rage craw would be nice or try a big bites cane thumper cut in half( senko with swimbait tail) regardless good luck and keep me posted on results
Used one the other day for the first time with a 4" curly tail grub. Generates alot of wobble! The hooks are sorta weak but still a nice addition to the arsenal!
Scrounger head type baits are a different animal. The action they provide is pretty subtle. My experience with using a jig skirt and bulky trailer was not good. Too much bulk would over ride the rocking motion of the head (1/2 oz. ). But run a fluke or swimbait and watch it shine. Longer slender style trailers seem to allow the head to rock back and forth and do what it is intended to do. With that, it has great potential and produced some great action last year.
Been fishin a scrounger head with a baby fluke for about a year now.
I finally got a hold of two packs the other day. Now if it would only warm up... More snow this weekend.
The whole point of a scrounger is to impart a rocking, swimbait-like action on a bait, so your trailer really doesn't need to have any of its own. Often times if the cadence of the wobble of the scrounger is different from that of its trailer (like a paddle-tail swimbait trailer) they will just interfere with each other's actions.
Try threading on a 4" or 5" KVD Caffeine Shad or Elaztech Fluke and just watch what it does in the water on the retrieve. They swim like a wounded minnow even though the trailer itself doesn't have any kicking/flapping appendages.
Scroungers are high on my list of "need to try" baits for this season! Saw a show last weekend on them - I think it was North American Fisherman. Got me very interested.
So do yall suggest to just get the scrounger heads and put the fluke or senko type bodies on them or should i go with the skirted one with the fluke or senko? Thanks for all the information!

Excatly what the guys and I suggest, get scrounger heads and put on whatever trailer you want.

This totally surprises me, I thought you would have been fishing these for years.. 8-)
BTW, be careful on which brand scrounger heads you buy, not all are created equal..Arron Martens for me..
Bass Univeristy last week had a show on the skirted scrounger . looked very interesting. Nice action.

What weight and bill size for baby fluke?

3/16, you could get away with a 1/4 oz though, long bill. I finally wound losing it yesterday.. Not bad for fishing it for a year in weeds, tree limbs, ect..
Great little bait that can flat put fish in the boat. Glad to see the new Elite Series arrive!! http://www.basstackledepot.com/davis-baits-elite-scrounger.aspx
So just so im clear, are you all just using the blank scrounger head with a plastic trailer or are y'all throwing the skirted witha trailer? Thanks again!
How would you fish those, like a swimming straight retrieve, or would you work it along the bottom?
You can fish them with a skirt & trailer, or just a trailer, I prefer a baby fluke, it's up to you.
As for the retrieve, you can do a steady cadence, you can bottom bounce them, twitch em, slow roll em..The fish will dictate which retrieve you need.
A bunch of brands make them now and I'd like to know which brand do you all use? When I first got them two years ago, they were incredible! The bill was stiff and gave a superfluke an awesome swimming action, then they started making the bill out of a different material and it didn't give a fluke any action, I called the company and they sent me new bills but they still didn't work (What gives?!!) So, which brand do you use and does it make your fluke swim like a snake(without spinning)?!
I like the Arron Martens brand. I tried 2 other brands, they totally sucked, and I don't recall which brands they were.. :-[
Either TW, or BTW should have them.
How are you rigging flukes on there? With an exposed hook coming out of the back?

Yup, the bill makes it fairly weedless, well until you hit a decent sized tree..LOL

Lucky Strike and Kalins. Kalins has a Gammi hook. The lucky Strike a bit more movement. Put a Basstrix or similar swimbait on one and watch it work. I'm sold on that combo! I fish heavier heads than most I guess, 3/8 and 1/2.
I've found that using a snap of some sort improves the side to side wiggling action of the scroungers. Same concept behind tying to a split ring on a crank.

$6.99 ea. Really?
Sometimes the flash of chatterbaits do seem to be too much, and the scrounger/small fluke worked well for me last year. Just picked up 2- 5 pks. (unpainted) for 4.59 each. Have to use glue on their "keeper" though...
I dont really wanna give this one up, but the scrounger jighead, no skirt, with a berkely havoc devil spear rigged sideways is absolute dynamite. Been fishing it for a couple weeks in st. louis area and catchin em when nothing else seems to be working.
an Iconelli trick has been killing them for me lately..
try a strike king baby rodent rigged on its side....great swimming action and something they haven't seen...
J&S 1/2 oz longbill. 14lb floro. 7'3" MH moderate action rod. Zoom superfluke in disco violet with the tail dipped chartreuse. Points and breaks. Graph bait and fish, count it down and swim it thru with steady retrieve and small twitches. It's gonna be like a crankbait bite. Don't forget to set the hook but most times you are going to be amazed at the vicious bites!!
