I've been fishing a Mattlures Bluegill in a bass loaded 2-4 acre pond. We have cought 6lb+ bass from here and seen bigger. So I know there are big bass in there and I have fished my bluegill there for countless hours. I have had several hits over the months, and a few weeks ago I accualy had a hook up but lost it. Fourbizzle told me to bend my hook back a little, which I did.
The pond is stained/murky, deep part is around 5feet deep. The only structure is fallen trees, but their are alot of them. There is alot of surface alege and the bottom is muck/leaves. This pond has been basicly unfished for +10 years, so the fishing pressure is almost non-existant. Me and my friends are the only people who fish it reguarly exept for some beer-can-littering guy that doesnt know the difference between a bass and a mackerel. (lol) We have been catching loads of 4+lb bass on jigs (one yesterday) and other lures, so I'm kinda wondering why I havn't gotten one on my mattlures yet. I fish it the intire pond with it close to the surface, probaly 1-2 feet below. I run it as slow as I can and streight retrieve it. What am I doing wrong? How should I run it? Should I fish it deeper? Any help would be awsome.
Thanks a ton
Matt
PS
My friend is intrested in getting a ML Baby Bass. It weighs 1.3oz, do you think he could throw it on a 6'6" meduim-heavy? (rated for 1oz)
Matt, you've had several hits over the last months. That's swimbait fishing. If your in honest pursuit of that state record, then you should be thrilled about the hits you have gotten, because one day your gonna hook up with one and you will have your new pb and possible state record. Also realize that you have been fishing it at the coldest months, and the fish were sluggish. Now that you are starting to get warmer weather, the fish can have a little more aggression in them when they lock onto your bait. Just keep chunkin and even though I love mattlures, why not throw some different swimbaits like the ABT wagtail or the Mattlures Babybass or the New California Swimbabes Hot Momma?
Also, the Baby Bass can definately be thrown on a 6'6" MH. I throw the Mattlures Gill on the 7' MH and the rod barely has a bow in it when I cast. Just make sure he uses 17lb or higher line
Also, have you been lubing up your baits when your throwing them?
LOL when I get a hit saying it is a "thrill" is a understatement. I almost crap myself everytime I feel a bump. ;D
I'm going to get some Baby Bass before too long. I'm kinda on a tight budget.
And no, I dont use any sents/lubes. Think it will make a difference?
It makes all the diference. Not the smell the LUBE. When a bass hits a bigg rubber bait, its little teath dig into the bait. They get a real good grip. So you swing and the hook doeas not penatrate. Then they open thier mouths and out pops the bait. If the bait is lubed they dont have a good grip and the bait will slide when you swing causing the hook to burry itself into the fish.
VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was going to say Lube is the key but the Mattlures beat me to it... one other idea I had was slow down even more. I notices the bluegill will try to roll a litttle sideways on me unless I concentrate on slowing it down... just a factor of it's shape. Often times I'll just quit reeling for just a second, to break the pace a little.
I think megastrike is the best (of the ones I've used) for lube and also it lasts a bit longer than most others.
Keep throwing the swimbait.... it will pay off in time. I think you'd get more bites on the baby bass but you'll also catch some smaller fish.
ok what kinda lube do you recommend mattlures and what way do youll fish the bluegill bait just a slow steady retreive in shallow water or what? thanks guys

I believe Matt recommends Megastrike and it's what I use. Yes, just a slow, steady retrieve at any depth you wish to fish it. I've had better luck with his Baby Bass but all his baits catch Bass, BIG Bass!

About how long will one tube last?
Thanks
Matt
One tube will last a long time. The stuff stays on the bait for a while. I also like Pro Cure scents in thier butter formulas.
One of the biggest mistakes I see beginners doing is reeling in the bait to fast. 90% of my bites come from a slow steady retreive. I might throw in a fall or jerk when I hit something or swim past something. When I say slow I mean just fast enought to make the tail swim.
Fast techniques are for small fish.
My hookups have improved on the gill if you give it just a split second before you set. I don't do this with any other baits, but it seems to work on the gill. Alot like a spook. After the hit, just a second for the rod to load and then swing.
Secondly, a big fish that wants that bait, will get it and it won't be hard to hook her. I feel that the gill gets a good number of little fish that just slap at it. So everytime you feel a bite, swing like its a ten, but if you miss, assume it wasn't
A tube of megastrike will probably last about 2.79684684 years. Try as I might, I can't ever seem to use one all the way up. They either go bad in the 110degree sun, or i lose it....or my punk buddies jack 'em. I use a different scent alot of the time. I think that our fish are starting to realize that the prickly trout that yank you out of the water always smell like garlic. Probably more of a confidence thing anyway. Whatever you get, get something very sticky and slimy. Those water thin spray on ones won't do you a lick of good.
Keep at it dude, it will happen.
What about vaseline?
I would use vasaline over nothing at all but that is basicaly what the base in megastrike or the procure butters are. I would rather use the stuff that smells like prey but if all you got is vasaline, well its better than nothing
Maybe vaseline and garlic powder.
I've got Megastrike, but it is the crawfish formula.
Hmmm.... Burley gave me a idea. I wonder if I could mix up somthing to use while I wait for the Megastrike. Vaseline, garlic powder, and maybe a few other things. Anyone else every try this?
Thanks for the great idea! I'm heading to my test lab right now! (the kitchen sink)
OK attept #1 failed. All I had was garlic salt and it made the vasaline too grainy to stick and discolored it to a light brown color. Garlic powder would probaly be the better choice.
Attept #2 underway.....
Garlic powder will discolor it a bit.
I was semi-joking when I posted that. :-?
One would really need an extract or oil.
Maybe I could just catch a couple of bluegills, chop them up and soak them in some sort of solvent for a day or two, then strain and reduce the solvent. Mix that with a little vaseline and BAM you've got bluegill supermegafabulousstrike®
Actualy Burley you just stumbled onto one of my tricks. Alright I'll give it up because I am such a nice guy.
Disclamer: this might not be legal
So hypotheicly if you want to make a GREAT gill scent you would catch a halfdozzen gills and scrape off all thier slime and scales and put that in a babyfood jar. Next you would add a couple heaping tablespoons of petrolium jelly(vasaline) add about a teaspoon or 2 of salt and mix really well. This lube scent will stay on for a long time and smell just like a gill. The salt will keep it from spoiling.
No need to chop up the gills becuase thats a difernt smell than the outer slime. The scales will fall off in the water especialy when you get a bite and this is one trick that turnes followers into biters.
Plus you can eat the gills when your done
DONT add any kind of solvent. you will never get rid of that smell and your scent would probably repell the bass
Or use them for catfish bait.
I guess that gives me a reason to catch a few bluegills. ;D

I have never heard of that before! If that is truly your secret, I am amazed you shared it here! That was really nice of you! Thanks!

Thanks alot I'll have to try that! I copied and pasted it, so hurry and delete that post before anyone else reads it! ;D
Question: Is there anyway to do this to a blue gill and release it?
In all honesty this is one of my tricks and I am suprised I shared it. I like to help but I do like to keep a few secrets to my self. I do have alterior motives though. The scent thing does work and it works well so it should help you guys get more fish on my baits wich helps me. Right now I am almost regretting giving it up but I dont hardley fish anymore so sombody else might be able to catch them.
No you cant release the bluegill after you deslime and scale them. They will die almost instantly.
We used to make it with Vaseline and Real Baitfish Oil brand attractant. Thin the Vaseline in the microwave just long enough to liquefy and stir it up and then a few minutes in the freezer to set back up. Works well, lasts a long time but once you get married, your wife will make you buy something pre-mixed. ...lol I had a little 2 oz tupperware cup (looked like a big shot glass with a snap on lid) which was perfect.
Matt, your tip is greatly appreciated.
I just received one of your baits in the mail Matt. Wow great looking bait. I got the 5in female BG. I was wondering exactly what size treble hook do you recommend using on this? My intuition calls for a big EWG Gamakatsu #2. let me know if Im right. Thanks.
I think I am using a size 4 2x owner with a heavy splitring. Gammies will bend out on big fish. I dont trust them. I also dont like a big oll hook on the bottom. It gets snagged more and it takes away from the realism. I also embed on of the trebles into the belly so the hook is not hanging
After carefully considering this whole swim bait idea I've came to the conclusion that the bluegill is the bait for me to try on Toledo since they are an abundant food source. Matt thanks for the tip about the treble hood since I have been concerned with it just hanging out there for every snag around. I have a strong aversion to throwing an exposed hook in the areas I fish.

Thanks for the great tip Matt! And for those of us who depend on your tilapia, I guess the same will work with tilapia as the source! Time to get the fly rod out!
I think I need to let the water warm up around here to have this lure work properly for me. I was throwing it in around 50-55°F water. The tail was moving but I had to reel faster than I would think. The bait close to the boat would break the surface of the water. I think it was a little cold out for that plastic to move. You were able to see your breath at 3pm in the afternoon. I was fishing it with 17lb Pline on a 7 '6[ch733] flipping stick. Any ideas?
