Snaps? Anyone use them? 2025

fishing user avatarAPK62 reply :

Does anyone use snaps to attached their lure (Cranks, Jerks,Swim, Etc) If so what are your opinions on using them? Do they change the affect the way the lure performs or does it help the lure perform better?

Thanks,

Andy

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

Dont like the snap swivells they can break and often become tangled in your lure. I only use them if i am fishing on particular lure a swimming worm; and the reason i use it in that case is because the ball bearing swivell gives it a better action.

fishing user avatarring fry reply :

Snaps on crank baits, jerk baits, and some topwater.  I think it gives them a little more action.  Snap/swivels, never.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I use snaps for cranks and lipless.  Everything else gets tied on.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

I use snaps on all swimbaits. No swivel/snaps, though.  Theoretically, snaps will give you lure more action. A simple test is to put a snap on a swimbait, hold the snap in one hand, and the swimbait in the other. Now, move the swimbait from side to side. Now do the exact thing without the snap.

fishing user avatarMarty reply :

I've used the 1/2" duolock snaps for years. Not everyone agrees, but I don't think there's enough change in action (if any at all) to affect your success.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

I use the DuoLocks all the time with all hard baits. Improves the action and makes switching baits much quicker.

I would never use a snap-swivel combo however. Just a bit too much hardware for my liking.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

Never used em, never saw a need for them.. ;)

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Recommended by every guide or charter captain I've been with is a loop knot, which I used for years until about 8 months ago.  As of late I have been using 3/4 duolocks for both freshwater and inshore fishing with zero reduction in lure action and strength to land medium size fish in the 20-30# range.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

i use Norman speed clips in the magnum size for jointed swimbaits , work very well !!!  ;)

fishing user avatarfishEguy reply :

If improved action is your goal, learn to tie a good loop knot and get rid of the swivels.

fishing user avatarGamec0cks5 reply :

I have been using the Berkley Tru Locks and have liked them and caught a few fish on them. I like them

fishing user avatarChris W. reply :

THe only good thing i see of snaps is not having to keey retying. I use a rapala knot for a loop knot though. I don't use snaps anymore.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Though it would be nice, the "most" lure action does not automagically equate to the "best" lure action.

The best lure action hinges on seasonal period, temperature trend, local weather, et al.

In any case, I try to keep a snap on one of my fishing outfits at all times

to satisfy the emergent need for quick-change and to encourage lure experimentation.

fishing user avatarDave P reply :

I use them on any rod that I might be casting cranks, jerkbaits, or swimbaits on.

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

I prefer the Breakway clips.

fishing user avatarbmadd reply :

Berkley Cross-lok snaps have worked great for me. I have yet to have one fail in over 2 years of using them.

fishing user avatarCAdeltaLipRipper reply :

I use snaps on my main baitcasting set up. Use them on jigs swimbaits, crankbaits, and i use them for topwater on my topwater set up. They make things less stressful since you can switch that fast, plus they can enhance the lures action

x2. I would like to know the answer to this question as well.

fishing user avatarPantera61 reply :

snaps on cranks and jerkbaits, never a snap swivel

fishing user avatarbassmaster85 reply :

occasionally.

fishing user avatarAdam Harbuck reply :

I use DuoLock snaps on my "plug" rods, and yes I do remove the split-rings, EXCEPT on Pop-Rs, simply because I can't get the snap through the eye down deep inside the cupped face of the Pop-R. I used to tie a loop knot, but once in a catching frenzie, I didn't retie my loop knot and the loop broke on the cast, chunking a trap about 100yards. It had simply fatigued the mono in the loop.

fishing user avatarGone_Phishin reply :

Has anyone used the Excalibur Hold-Tite snaps?  I'd like to hear some feedback on these before I start chucking custom balsas.  Thanks.

fishing user avatarflippin and pitchin reply :

I started using Mustad quick snaps for crank baits, lipless baits  and jerkbaits.  I always remove the split ring.  Everything else gets tied on.

fishing user avatartimothy_spain reply :

i use snaps to help change lures quickly, but stopped using them after a snap broke when i accidentally hit the pier railing.  no swivel snaps.
