I was wondering if any one uses chatter baits. If you do what are some tips on fishing a chatter bait and what are some of the best trailers for chatter baits that you have use. What kind of weather or water conditions are best for using chatter baits?

I fish chatter baits some, and I have learned a few things that I will share with you. The first is buy a quality product, and one of the most well known brands for this type of bait are way down on the list IMO. Get one with a good sharp hook, and a good quality blade that does not bend easily. I prefer a bait that uses a 1/2oz head, lighter than that and they tend to rise in the water column as they are worked. I like to throw them on a MH/F rod with either FC or Copoly line, I like a reel that has a little higher IPT but nothing to crazy. The way I work the bait is to cast it and let it sink to what ever depth I want to cover, I then begin a steady retrieve until I can feel the bait begin to "chatter" I don't reel any faster than it takes to impart this action on the bait. I often fish them with no trailer, it's my preference as I feel like they already have a lot going on. My favorite areas to throw them in are contour breaks and sandy points that have either emergent or dyeing grass.
They are a great bait and have the potential to catch a lot of nice fish. Good Luck

thank you for the tips I didn't know that chatter baits would work with out trailers but ill try the next time im out in the water and nice catches. good luck with your fishing too.

I would agree with not reeling the bait any faster that it takes to impart vibration. I also feel like it will give you a better feel of your bait as well.

One of the best things I learned to do in the spring and fall is to completely remove the skirt and add a keitech swing impact 4" trailer.

Buy the D&M Piranha 2 if u want a high quality chatter bait. Those things are amazing. You won't ever look Z Man's or Booyah's way again after D&M's baits.

I'm a bit of an addict when it comes to bladed jigs. I agree with aavery, fish them as slow as you can while keeping the blade moving. They'll work on a faster retrieve, but when they really shine is during a slow retrieve. I've had very good luck as of late with a lift, drop retrieve, sometimes really ripping it off the bottom. The odd thing is versus most baits that they hit on the drop they seem to strike on the upswing a lot of the time. I can't stress the importance of buying a quality bait enough either. I had lots of problems with hooks and skirts falling apart and poor quality hooks and components, so I started making my own. Lots of other good quality baits out there but I like being able to build them exactly to my specifications. I use about anything for a trailer, lately it's been a Pit Boss or Rage Menace, both rigged sideways. Havoc Subwoofers and beat shad are both good, 2/3 of a 5" stickworm is one I use a lot that I doubt fish ever see.
My biggest bladed jig fish to date hit a black and blue 3/8oz with 2/3 of a BPS Stick O.

Ive been useing Z Mans for a while and really like them but I've heard the same as you about the D & M.
Heard the same about Pure Poison.

I just picked up 4 D & M chatterbaits earlier this year and I can verify that they are indeed very high quality lures. They are my current favorite by a wide margin.

And don't be afraid to mis-match the trailer and skirt by far my most productive color combo is black and blue skirt with a dirty sanchez little dipper on the back.

I have both D&M and Z-Man chatterbaits. Both are awesome. This time of year, I agree with the posters above about reeling as slow as you can with the blade still moving. I use Optimum Double Diamond 3.75" or 4" swimbaits as trailers. Other times I will use Netbait Chunks or even the Z-Man trailers if they want a little less body mass. I use 1/2 oz to 5/8 oz ones this time of year. In the late spring I will use 3/8 oz ones and keep them up high and fast in really shallow grass and that works as well.

i've had mild success on white z-man chatterbaits, using a tennessee shad super fluke as a trailer.

D&M Chatterbaits are my current go to - but I have have been buying the old Phenix baits Chatterbaits whenever I can find them, they are rare, and no longer made, but of great quality as well from what I have found. For trailers I sometimes use trick works for a really weird and erratic action, otherwise Keitech Swing Impact Fats, single tail grubs of whatever variety I have available, or even Zoom Ultra Vibe Chunks have all had success.
As for actually fishing it, as most of the guys have mentioned, fishing it a speed just above what is necessary that gives me the blade or "chatter" action usually works well. I have had success kind of hopping it through grass, and popping it during straight retrieves as well.
Definitely a fun bait to fish, I enjoy them.

This is how I fish them. I put them to more work this summer. I fish them in dirtier water and the best advice I can give is to fish them with a medium retrieve in dirty water until you catch some fish. Catching that first fish is usually enough to gain some confidence in the bait.

I use them when the fish are most active - lowlight conditions or windy days. I love to throw them my cover and hop them off the bottom. If I don’t get bit right then, I’ll steadily and slowly retrieve. Love using swim senkos for trailers. They look ridiculous but they simply work.

I want to hate them, and I do, but sometimes the stupid things just catch the heck out of fish better than other things, and that's my main criteria. I do some things with them that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere that catch me some pigs every year, so yeah.

A tip I picked up from the tacticalbassin Youtube channel was to target large fish, use a 4.3" Keitech or a 3.8" for slightly smaller fish. To catch fish in quantities however try a soft plastic craw or a 4" fluke.

Love fishing them- at this time of year, they work best for me fished like a blade bait off the bottom. In the summer I like to jump them around by twitching the rod tip during a straight retrieve.

I use the D&M and Omega. I prefer the Omega one for faster retrieve as it takes more to get their blades going. However I do like the Omega for the "stop and drop" technique where I burn it and kill it all the way to the bottom then pop it up and start again. As for the D&M I use these with more traditional chatterbait retrieves of slow and steady for slow pause continue.
