We had some equipment come in from England and inside was huge packs of Silica. 100g each packet. Ive heard it's good to prevent moisture buildup and rust hooks. Since these are obviously too big for plano boxes in the current packaging, could I make small pouches to put into the boxes?
Yeah, I have done it before.........I used panty hose.
If you don't want to use that, cut the heads off of q-tips and drop them in every other spot in your box. The cotton will absorb the moisture. I've been doing it for years and never had any rusty hooks in my boxes.
I use silica packs also for the last several years. Seems to work well.

My question would be: does 1 pack (say the small ones that come in shoe boxes) work for an entire Plano box? Or because of the divisions in the box, do you need more than one (like the Q-tips Mark uses)?
I haven't had an issue with moisture since I started using the planos with holes in them. Works so well, I put holes in all my old boxes.
My OCD would require me to measure all holes out perfectly!! Lol

Holes in the lids, or all around?

I'm assuming he meant in the bottom like the hydro boxes so any excess water will trickle out.

Guess I need to check them out online. Wasn't sure if it was a draining hole, or an evaporative hole (top)...
Thanks.

All over. It's about air flow, and not trapping water in the boxes. Aaron Martens gave me the idea a few years ago. Most guys that see them think I'm nuts. They say that it lets the rain water in. That's not the point....your baits get wet anyway.

Thanks, John. I'll look these up on the web. Do you have a pic handy of the one you did yourself?
Is there a specific size drill bit that is best for this DIY project - i.e., to keep smaller hooks from finding their way out?
I actually used my solder gun to make the holes - less mess. I'll try to get a pic up.
One more thing. It is extremely important not to put wet lures/hooks back into to the tackle box. This is one thing I have done for the last couple years and I believe it has saved a lot of rust or corrosion issues.
I toss them on the deck until Im done for the day.
With the holes, I don't worry whether the baits are wet or not. Haven't had a single rust issue since I put them there.
John,
Did you dig up pics of your boxes?

I do the same or throw them in the cup holder.

I'll have to take new ones.
Pics up?
Started using these this fall after discovering a couple of trebles with rust.
I have been using the extra blue anti-rust dividers from Flambeau boxes.

Me too, I didn’t figure they would actually do much but since I started putting 1 to 2 per 3600 box I haven’t noticed a single instance of rust.

I put them in each section of the box. Has worked great for me throughout the years.
