The Brush Hog 2025

Picked up a pack in watermelon with red flake to try around the lillies and downed trees at my home lake. Never really fished creature baits or many soft baits before. My wheelhouse is cranking, jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits. I usually do well on topwater when the time is right. Looking at expanding my capabilites into Soft Plastics and Jigs. Someone explain to me how to be successful with these Brush Hogs around this type of cover.

Pretty sure that I've never gotten a bite on a brush hog....baby brush hogs, absolutely.....but not the full size.

It could be the way I fish them due to lack of confidence....I don't know.

But, I have had similar results with other large creature baits, other than lizards....like RI Kinky's or other 5+ beavers and hogs. Good luck.

Just re-read your post and my reply....wasn't much help, I'm afraid...take a look at some of the articles on this site. There's good info to get you started. At its simplest, its a matter of building confidence in dropping your plastic into the thick of those downed trees - quietly, vertically, and with laser-like focus on your line (with your eyes and your hands.)

I use either a 1/8, 3/16, or 3/8 Brass bullet weight with a glass bead. 90% of the time, it's the 3/16. I lift the rod up to about a 45 angle in one motion. One cast will be a slow lift (drag), next cast same motion but faster (hopping). Anytime I hit good cover (laydowns included) I just stop and shake it for as long as I can stay interested before continuing the retrieve. I actually like the baby brush hog a little better. Great lure....dip that tail in Chartreuse and hold on. Good luck.

I use the full size brush hog on a twist lock keel weighted hook to drop through lily pads and get hammered almost every cast in one of the private ponds I fish. It is one of my favorite lures to use in pads.

I walk it up over pads and let it drop between them and BAM!

Make sure and use some strong braid to fight the fish out.

This is the route I was thinking. Do you use the garlic/chartreuse dip too?

I like a solid black full sized brush hog with a 5/0 EWG and a 1/4oz bullet weight, pitched around all kinds of cover. It's a big fish bait but it will get the little guys too.

I've never used dip on it, I just fish it plain. I might try it in the future, but it isn't necessary where I fish most of the time.

I've had days on the lake when the bass really like them and I've had days where they preferred something else. Hmmm...seems like I've been here before.

I use them on my punch gear, 8' Heavy rod, 80lb braid, punch hook, punch skirt, 3/8oz lead, bobber stop and flip it straight into wood. I mean like right into the heart of a tree.

Great bait in wood. Around pads pretty much anything will work. Make some jig rigs with bass cast weights. The way they drop and clang around in there are deadly.

I use the baby brush hog on shaky heads, jika rigs, and t-rigged. I think the jika is my favorite way to fish them. Like others, I have not had great luck on the full size brush hog.

The Zoom Super Hog is another great variant of the baby brush hog. I fish them mostly the same way, but sometimes I fish the superhog weightless because it has a neat glide to the bottom. It is a good skipping bait.

I have had some success with them. I usually t-rig them. Drag/pull them along the bottom close/through some brush, downed tree limbs.

I have used the regular and the smaller ones. Have had better luck with other baits, but won't throw them out. I give them a shot every now and then.

I use them a lot on a c-rig. Also drag them on a wobble head.

Well I tried one out yesterday evening Texas rig style. Dipped the bottom half of it in chartreuse garlic dip. Flipped it over the lillies and dragged it over the top and let it fall in the gaps. Caught one fish with it about a pound or so he drilled it while it was falling. Never got another bite on it. Fished one area of heavy laydows thought for sure I'd get a strike but didn't.

Personally, I think the Brush Hog was too big of a profile for the gaps in the Lilly Pads. It had a hard time reaching the bottom because it would get stuck on the way down.

I stopped at Walmart on the way home last night and bought a pack of Baby Brush Hogs in the same color pattern and went with a 3/8 Tungsten bullet weight instead of my 1/4 lead. I think the heavier weight and the smaller profile will fall a little better. Gonna give it another try on the same water after work this evening. I can see where this bait takes practice but can be a deadly thing to use when the timing is right.

My Dad threw a spinner bait all evening and kicked my butt.

I do the exact same thing with a 3/8oz bullet tungsten weight and a Eagle 4/0 or 5/0 flipping hook.

^^^ Yup sometimes I peg and sometimes I dont. Same with the skirt sometimes and sometimes not.

Baby brush hog is probably my favorite plastic right now. I like to put it on a light bullet weight and 3/0 hook, then cast it into holes in the lilly pads. Don't be afraid to throw it where it is 'too shallow' for bass. I also make long casts down a bank, then fish slowly but steadily all the way back. They go crazy over it some days

This is pretty much exactly how I use them. I use a PB&J Brush Hog made by a little guy here in MO and they just kill. Big bait but it gets hammered.

They aren't a very big bait. It looks like its barely even a snack in a 3lb largie's mouth.

I caught 1 4 lbder on a watermelon candy brush hog.It was under an isolated algae patch.Thats the only fish I've ever caught on one.

Now,baby brush hogs are a whole different story.Its actually in what I call my "circle of trust " baits,Which are my best 5 go- to baits.Watermelon red or seed.

I got a pack to try and really like them. I just throw them weightless and hop them slowly along the bottom.

Tried the baby brush today weightless with 2/0 and it was pulling them out the weeds.
