Scents Don't They Just Wash Off? 2024

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

A lot ofm he yum and gambler baits I fish are scented already. But I've been looking into megastrike, hog tonic, and berkley. I get covering up our scent after we touch it but doesn't it just wash off after the first cast? Is it ok to mix a scent with pre scented baits?

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

That's why I like a scent with a paste-like carrier or an oil based scent. I feel those will cling better and stay on longer. And yes on adding Megastrike to pre-scented brands of plastic.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Oh ok very cool thanks for the reply. I've never messed with any kind of scents im a newbie to that.

fishing user avatarMatthew2000 reply :

Mega strike will stick for a long time basically until you don't want it on anymore.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

We aren't talking about hunting big game here

( whitetail, elk, moose, ) scent control IS vital when big game hunting.. As far as washing hands are concerned, ( as it apply's to a fish smelling )

Is far fetched IMO. A cooked in scent doesn't hurt,

( Garlic, Power bait ) a goo applied to a plastic bait like megastrike won't hurt.. How much does it really help? I cannot say, but I do quite well with scented & unscented baits. I loath the smell of elaztech plastic, however the fish couldn't care less...

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Lol I hear Ya I get we aren't hunting big game.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

They don't wash off your hands, clothing or boat carpet!

Reapply as needed, never put scent into a full bag of worms unless you plan on using all them that day, do it one at a time.

Don't add additional scents to Berkely a Gulp or Power baits, it may cause a unwanted chemical reaction, stiffing the soft plastic.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

I won't usually start out using a scent but if the bite is slow or they aren't really eating a bait well (just pecking at it, spitting it out before hookset, not holding a bait long) then I will use a scent. And I typically use Megastrike which technically isn't a scent but an amino acid paste which I feel helps fish hold onto a bait longer so you can get a good hookset on him.

fishing user avatarBruce424 reply :

I usually use it as a scent cover up. If I go straight to the lake after work usually use garlic powder or some other bait fish or craw scent. rub it on my hands so when I touch the lure or jig it doesn't get "contaminated". Hah

Tooth paste is a good hand cleaner, wash and rinse go touch any lure.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

JJ's magic definitely doesn't wash off.... That stuff is on there for good!

fishing user avatarzeth reply :

I use scent to make fish hold on longer not to attract them.

You can mix and match scents.

I do and have no problems.

JJ's magic is great.  It penetrates and stays put.  I am using it less and less however because I've had one to many methiolate explosions.

Also don't necessarily believe the hype about any particular scent. They all have differences and they all work in their own way. The newest craze amino acid. I guarantee almost every single scent on the market has amino acids in it.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

The OP asked if it washed off - Seems that although some does, depending on which product you use, there is always a residue let behind; even after some time.

Also, I've mixed up to three scents together, there was no smoking or bad reactions and I even still managed to catch a few fish.

Whether they "work" or not - can't say for sure.  But they definitely don't hurt your chances, meaning I do not believe a scent is preventing me from getting bit.

Megastrike seems like one of the best I've tried and it goes onto just about everything I throw.

So that's how you are putting a whoopin on me!

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Have used atlas mikes and rage gel scent. Personally have had rage last 50 minutes on a Crankbait and both Alta's mikes and rage last more than 30 casts on soft plastics. While I don't believe I get more strikes because of scent, I feel they hold the bait longer and appear to hit it a second or third time if I miss them when scent is applied.

Gel scents are where it's at, have two more brands I will be trying this spring.

Perhaps - but what might be of particular interest to you is - I'm using your Megastrike . . . .

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

I stopped putting megastrike on my hard baits. It's very difficult to remove, especially if you apply it in the heat. I soak some of my soft baits in smelly jelly, but that's about the extent of it.

fishing user avatarBrian-S reply :

Another vote for megastrike

fishing user avatarwytstang reply :

Two I use is MegaStrikes original and BioEdge semi-solid wand in shad & craw fish scent as both stay on for many many cast.

JJ's gets my vote also! JJ's works into the plastic without hurting the plastic! I think it is the best long lasting sent on the market!!!!

fishing user avatarRanndomUndead reply :

i dont use scents very often, like 2-3 times a year really...but when i do i like to mix Mend-It and the scent in a container, apply it to the top of the bait, and then close it in a bag for however long. Pretty much marinates and impregnates at the same time

fishing user avatarBobby Uhrig reply :

Hmm if you look over the past years you will find new scents in the market stating amino acids I have gone to many shows including ICAST. Where I was in a shirt and tie and asked the manufactures and inventors of these scents/attractants which Aminos are in there and what was their significance. I would say 99% of them had no clue So I call bs on them. If you look at our history I would have to say Megastrike is the first to proclaim the "Amino Acid" concept. I know what's in there and I know specifically why each one of them are for. I learned how to develope the "carrier" and make them water soluble. So basically you are attracting them by olfaction / smell. Chemo/gustation = taste =retention So Berkley makes a great product and I always give credit when due but always look at science and options.

Ask anyone that watched me at the Bassmasters Classic doing demonstratiins with it. It will make you a believer.

I'll tell you this Bobby, over the past several years, along with Braided line - I believe Megastrike  to be a most significant & positive contributor to my own fishing success.

So, I'm on board.

Well thank you for that compliment Believe me it's always in my boat and tackle bag. I see people that say when the bite is slow then they add an "attractant ". Why would you not use it all the time. You could be missing fish. Now why would you do that

I have been using "the goo" for as long as I can remember...Don't leave home without it!

I've always used "scents" since the invention of Fish Formula and I also use pure anise oil.

Both have been replaced by Megastrike ;)

fishing user avatarAdleyfishes reply :

I use Gulp Alive Spray just because I am a huge Berkley fan! It may wash off but all around its great. On my lures I sometimes use FishSticks too but they are less productive. Does anyone have a cheap scent to reccomend?

fishing user avatarbrgbassmaster reply :

Dip in jjs magic you wont have that problem. Ive had old plastics that smell all summer lol

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Megastrike not only helps get bites, it also helps hook fish!

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

Spike it also seems to last forever. Any bait I dipped the tails in to make chartreuse go in a bag together. They still smell like garlic and I don't know if it will ever go away. There is also a garlic spray can my stepfather uses sometimes that is super strong and last a long time. I think they sell that at Walmart. It is in a black can with red letters I thonk.
