I have probably caught the most fish on the original floater out of all of them but I also have fished it the longest.

This for sure. I haven't tied on an original in years (also the jointed floater).

Scatter rap crank has been great this year for me.

fishing user avatarRHuff reply :

I've caught a lot of bass on multiple bodies of water with the Shadow Rap and Shadow Rap Shad since they were released. This year though, The Rapala BX Minnow in silver/black has produced the biggest fish for me.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Trying to find out which one is the most productive by asking isn't going to take you very far for a very simple reason, it's not like all baits were released at the same time so there is no point for comparison, you want to know which one is the most productive for me the answer is pretty straighforward: Original Floating just because I've been fishing with it for more than 40 years, in second place are Countdown, Jointed and Husky Jerk even, I got a few deep HJ that I fish very ocassionally and a few X raps that also aren't fished much ( sometimes when it's windy and Trying to cast an original is a real pita ), as for the newer models I have no advice since I don't own any.

fishing user avatarrboat reply :

Sorry I forgot to add the X Rap to the list. It does seem to have a good track record for many anglers.

fishing user avatarKoz reply :

For years the Husky Jerk Yellow Perch was my go to bait and it never failed to land something until this year. Part of that reason is that I've become a bit more diverse in what I throw. While it comes out of my bag a lot less now I haven't caught anything on it in 6 months.

fishing user avatarsnake95 reply :

All work, they have a wide variety, for a variety of different actions, applications, and conditions.

You forgot one of the top bass producers of all time, and the lure that would rank along with the original as one of the top classics of bass fishing: the shad rap!

If I had to pick one for multi-purpose cranking, I would want to have a shad rap shallow size 09 in shad color, or an original in good old fashioned silver or gold, size 11.  The original is versatile because it can be used as a surface lure by twitching it in place, reeled with a start and stop and allowed to pause on surface, and reeled in at just about any speed (and it will maintain fairly stable action).

The jointed versions of the original work great, too.

I was using the original floater some 45 yrs ago and caught a ton of fish on it. The rest of the list, not so much.

Not to side track this thread but am I the only one that gets confused by all the different minnow type baits on the market today, Rapala and other brands. It seems like if I bought some of each of the above listed baits, I would need a manual to help me understand when and how to use them.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

This one is easy for me....Original Floating Rapala minnow in sizes F-9,F-11, or F-13 on the lightest line you can get away with. 6lb to 10lb mono seems to work the best or use 10lb braid with a leader but I still think I do better with straight mono.

The Flat Rap would be a close second because it is still balsa, but seems to cast easier due to its shape and I can sometimes get away with heavier line over weeds in the 14lb range.

At Night My main lure is the Jointed Original Rapala crawled on the surface. I learned that technique fishing with my brother on a golf course when I was maybe 10 years old, For some reason the J-9 is most productive but the J-11 gets bigger bites.

The only other Rapala lures I use during certain times of year are the shad rap #7, not having one in your box is criminal, then the shallow shad rap on lighter line will usually outfish any of my square bills but for some reason I don't use it as much as I used to. you can wake the shallow shad rap or fish it like a jerkbait, burn it, some days it just has something special the fish want.

I have yet to have a good day with any of the newer versions like BX series, Shadow Raps, I used to use countdowns as a young kid, same with husky jerks but I kind of retired them for most part.

For the floating Rapala, Silver/BLue back or silver black back, I guess its white and I dull the paint before fishing them to keep them subtle plus they get destoryed anyway. In Evening or stained water I use the Gold and black.

If you want to catch the biggest bass in your local pond, find a Original F-18 which is a big plug, but in places with shiners, I have caught some good fish on the gold and black back, you can throw that one on normal bass lb tests.

You can add suspend strips to them to get more distance on casts if needed, but I don't like messing with the Rapala, it is the best selling fish lure in the world of all time and still going for a reason. They catch fish in every country and every lake or ocean, Rapala doesn't market many lures for salt or fresh, or never used to...

fishing user avatarComfortably Numb reply :

I always liked the Husky Jerk and did well with it, until I discovered the LC Pointer. Never tried the Shadow rap yet.

fishing user avatarHookRz reply :

To me, the original floater in sizes 5 to 11 is the still the best finesse topwater lure ever made.

This right here.  I have also had good luck with the jointed minnow.

fishing user avatardavecon reply :

Bass - Shallow - original floater 7 or 9

Bass - deeper - DT 7 Flat

Snook - Flat Rap

Biggest problem for me is finding Flat Raps. They are very hard to find, both locally and on line. If anybody knows a good source I would appreciate the info.

Problem for me is the Snook tear them up. Went through 3 of them yesterday catching 20 Snook and playing with about 12 juvi tarpon. They get beat up so bad that the internal wire hook holder is exposed and the balsa core gets torn off. It makes for a somewhat expensive fishing trip but when you catch some pretty nice Snook (one yesterday was 33 inches and 10 1/2 pounds) you bite the bullet.

I have tried literally dozens of alternative lures seeking a substitute but nothing comes close to being as good. Must have something to do with the predominate baitfish.

It's actually harder to find the lure than it is to find the fish !

Again, if anybody knows of a source for Flat Raps I would appreciate the info.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

The only floating minnow lure I use is the Bomber Long A in silver flash . Its been a staple in my tackle box since the early 80's . It handles well with baitcasting gear and  the bass that I have caught with it probably average larger than on any other lure I've used including the jig n pig .

fishing user avatarUPSmallie reply :

All seem to work well, but I've had my best luck with x-raps and husky jerks.  X-rap in any color size 10 and husky jerk size 12 in a color that matches your local forage.

fishing user avatartimsford reply :

I've caught fish on all of them I've tried, but I've caught the most fish on the original floater in either silver or gold. I've caught largemouth, smallmouth, spots, stripers, hybrids, white bass, walleye, channel and flathead cats, rainbow and brown trout, gar, every local species if sunfish/panfish, and probably a few more I can't think of at the moment on the original floater. I use the f11 size the most.

fishing user avatarAttila reply :

For me it's been the Shadow Rap and Shadow Rap Shad followed by the original Shad Rap. The best colour pattern for me has been either yellow perch or the original, darker green perch pattern as they match the forage up here in Ontario very well.

I did pick up some Scatter Raps this year but because of the success I had with jerkbaits I never bothered fishing with them. I'm going to give them some dedicated time next season in hopes of seeing when and where they work best.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

This is a tough one, sooner or later they all catch fish. I purchased some discontinued rapala Shad raps and there is a shiney green one I caught fish on one day while we were pond hopping.

but my favs have been;

orginal floater f7

blue

perch

silver black

gold black.

Do you guys use the Rapala knot with floating minnows? Will a Palomar Knot work just as effectively?

I just used the improved clinch knot, never had any ill effects with it.

I tie the loop knot on the Rapala Minnows and never put a split ring. I truly believe the Rapala knot is best when fishing finesse lures like the Balsa Minnows. If you are just planning on twitching it on the surface it probably would not matter much, but I like to mix in slow sweeps & with a direct knot the lure always tends to pull to one side and does not look as natural.

I try not to leave the loop too big cause it seems to cause twisting and gets tangled. If I have to go with heavy line I usually just switch over to a Plastic Minnow bait like the Bomber Long A & the split ring does not change the action. If I need to keep my bait over weeds & only have a few inches and need maximum buoyancy, I will pull off the split ring on plastic floaters like the Red Fin, Long A etc. Usually I am fishing over heavy weeds so I have heavy line and not sure the fish really get a good look at it, so then I just tie direct figuring the CLinch Knot is the knot I trust most, or Double clinch on Braid...Just what I do, I fish Floating Minnow baits every trip, but I would argue a loop knot is best if you plan on letting it dive a little bit.

It's funny, In Saltwater I know lots of guys who tie loop knots to every bait or lure they tie on, one of the best guys in our area will use a loop knot even for stroking a Grub/Swim Shad on a jig head. A swinging Jig head is becoming popular now, essentially the exact same thing. Tie a loop knot and you have a swing jig. In reality, if your knot moves on the eye of a lure, it changes the action, can't happen with a loop knot.

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

I'd put the Husky Jerks on the top of that list. Around here you can't beat the ones with the metallic colored sides on a cloudy day. Green back and gold/copper side is a killer. Best thing about them is if you lose one to a musky/pike/large pickerel/poor knot tying/tree fish/large rock you aren't out $25.
