Light Swimbait rod? 2025

Not looking at getting over 2 oz but have been between the Dobyns Fury 735C ($110 ish)/ Dobyns Fury 795SB ($110ish)and GLOOMIS IMX PRo 905 SWBR($180ish).
I will most likely be pairing it with a curado k and will most likely use for Swaver/Gatarell Jr/ Hudd 68 all around 2oz.
I would like to use it for bigger crankbaits as well. Let me know if there is another rod that should go on my list to look for a deal on.

I have been throwing my 6" weedless huds on a Irod Gen II 738sb, which is rated 1 to 4 oz. I have a Tatula 200 on it, very pleased with both fit and finish, and the action, tosses a hud a good distance. They run 149.00, you can get them for 127.00 or something during TW's black Friday.

Can you throw a bit lighter on that rod? I would be interested in some cranks around 5/8

It would be iffy, although the Irod has a softer tip, I'm not sure how well it would work with a 5/8 oz lure. I've only used my rod for 6" huds. You could always call Matt @ Irod and ask him, they have Great customer service. Maybe next time out I'll give a 5/8 oz a try..

The action speed to set the jig hook on a 68 hud is very different than what most desire for crankbaits. The gold standard for many years was the dobyns 807. The standard 6" weighs more than 2oz so I think you will be underpowered going with a rod which also be good for cranking. Jmo

The ROF 5 is 2 oz which I have- Also planned on throwing a few lighter swim/glide baits as well. That is why I was leaning towards the

Any time you are considering a swimbait rod for Hudd 68's go up in power, this lure weighs over 2 1/4 oz with a heavy hook.
The IROD IRG783 Swimbait Jr would be it's high end limit using ROF 12 Hudd 68 IMO,
S-Waver 168 would be good, 200 too heavy.
5/8 oz crank bait will not load a swimbait rod enough to launch the lure effectively. The IRG 754F Freds Magic Stick works good for 168 S-wavers and 6" Hudds, not so good for 68's.
Error on the heavy side Dobyns FR806SB or IROD IRG794 and Okuma GSA Heavy are good choices for the Hudd 68, S-Wavers 168 and 200 plus a wider verity of swimbaits.

Not familiar with IMX series swimbait rods, Most Loomis rods are faster action then others and not sure about this rods ratings. High end price point.

I ended up choosing this @ 119. I will let you know how it feels (hopefully will get to cast it before the freeze)

I've got a 100% hook and land ratio on the Daiwa DXSB 8' HF. It has done well for my ROF5 was 12 Huddleston 68s.
It'll throw down to 3/4oz well, but the action on that rod is far too much for crankbaits unless they're some 1 1/2oz to 2oz monsters sporting some size 2 and up trebles.
I think you'd be better served getting a rod for both techniques, which is why I suggested my swimbait rod. It's a budget friendly offering and a quality piece of gear.

I use a 7’6 H Berkley shock rod.

I have a Daiwa DX extra heavy I use for Deps Bullshooters,Deps 175 slide swimmers, 8" hudds. It handles them great, rod loads well and makes for easy casting. Not as much as a broom stick. 20% off at TW and regular price is $109. Certainly a good bang for buck. I have it matched with a Curado K200 and it does great.

What line do you use and how much line is left on the K after casting? I am concerned that it will not be enough as I am in between 30-40lb braid (I don't like since most likely will backlash and cast one off) 20 lb invisx- not sure I have enough capacity- and purchased some Sunline Defier Armilo Nylon Line 19lb 165yd to try out as WRB suggested with the smaller diameter and other benefits. Especially since it was on closeout and then 20% off on top of that... Debating if I need to get a bigger reel in the Tat 200 with these line capacity issues. I just do not know how far I will be able to cast these things.

If your casting baits above 2 oz I prefer a round reel. I use a Luna 253, but the shimano reels work just as well. 20lb yhb and never have casted off a bait. I picked up my reel used for 100 bucks and it's ready to own anything in fresh water. The reel internals of a round reel are better up to the task of big bait fishing. There are some low profile options like the revo winch but there is nothing light and easy about big bait fishing.

Shimano Tranx is a low profile reel that works for swimbaits depending on the model and gear ration selected.

Daiwa Lexa 300 Type Winn
Berkley Big Game 20 lb mono
I will be testing it out this coming weekend.

I have the first generation 7-6 imx swimbait rod. It's rated from 1/2 to 3 oz. I used it heavily down in Mexico at Lake Baccarac. It flung a 3/4 lipless crank a country mile. The guy I was fishing with has the same rod in the imx pro series. He was super impressed with the casting distance & how it handled big fish. I can tell you it handles big cranks with no problems. I was using SK10 XD's & duo realis G87 20A's which pull pretty hard & that rod was very comfortable to use. I also used it for 1 oz underspins with large paddle tails & hudd 68 specials & bacca buritto 2oz swim baits. I think you will be impressed with how well it handles single hook & treble hook baits within it's lure rating. Very versatile rod.
I had it paired with a curado 200pg & suffix advance 17lb copoly.

15lb big game. I have never once been concerned of not having enough line on the spool. I'm not launching those pricey baits like I would a 5 inch hand pour. I'm target casting and staying within range where i feel comfortable. The only reel that I ever get concerned about spooling is my Tatula, that thing flat out slings it.
