I didn't find anything in a search for a comparison of these two jerk baits.
Which is preferred and why?
Do the live pointers out fish the solid body pointers? I know the live's have durability issues.
I would take a pointer over an xrap any day of the week. I can't tell you how many times I've been fishing with a friend who was using xraps while I was using a pointer. Whenever they see me pull out the pointer they usually start telling me how ridiculous it is to pay $15-20 for a lure and how an xrap works just as well. Almost every time this happens within an hour or two they're asking me if they can borrow one of my pointers. The finishes on pointers are so much more realistic than Xraps imo and in clear water situations the pointers really outshine xraps. And to answer your second question, I've seen absolutely no difference between the live pointers and regular pointers other than the fact that the live pointers fall apart much quicker than regular pointers.
Both are great baits.
The X-rap is a fantastic bait. The finish on the X-Rap may not be as realistic, but it is certainly realistic enough, and will way outlast the finish on most other baits. I've got X-Raps that are all chewed up that still flash.
They're pretty comparable. I've fished both with about equal success. Although i must admit i own 2x more xraps than pointers becuase they are half the price
They're both of really good quality, and i guess it becomes personal preference and a financial consideration
Pointers. It's hard to beat a Ghost Minnow Pointer 78 for clear water.
If you can pay $15-20, get the pointer. If not, get the X-Rap.
The X-Rap is very effective when the bass are active.
The Pointer is more consistant.

Smithwick Super Rogue's out fish them both.
QuoteSmithwick Super Rogue's out fish them both.
I have a nearly complete collection of Rogues. I have every
one of the three in ten that work. I doubt I will ever fish them
again. They are too light in general, foul consistently, break
easily and lose buoyancy over time.
Otherwise, great lures.
Yup, and only Yamamoto Senko's work....
I will have to go with the rogues also.Great baits and less expensive.
all of them have their time and place.
that said, in my hands the pointers consistently outproduce the rest.
I like the pointers in certain colors. And I like Xraps in certain colors
The pointers are sweet but it sucks to lose a $15-20 lure. Since i mostly fish from shore I tend to lose alot of lures due to me being a somewhat aggressive angler. That being said, I am going to order some higher end lures to use on special occasions (i.e. when bragging rights are on the line!)
Pointer. It catches alot of fish and it's just great!
Thats easy! Buy both.Add to your many colection of crankbaits to come.
I fish lakes & rivers that has a lot of toothy critters, so an X-Rap will do just fine.
If your have limited funds get some X raps & Husky jerks, if you can afford to add a few Pointer 78 & 100's, Flash Minnows along with some Ima Flits. The Live Pointer is one of the few Lucky Craft baits that I've been disapointed in. I think the Pointer is the most consistent but I've had days where some of my other jerks were the "hot" bait. I think that jerkbaits are like cranks in that if you can afford it you'll do better with a variety of baits & colors.
I have fished both, and I think the pointer has better action then the xrap. Like others have stated, if you can afford the pointer go with it, if not get the xrap.
They are both good baits all in all, but imo, the pointer is a little better. The xrap would definetly make a good substitute though..
I use Xraps when the water warms a little. It's a much more effective bait when the fish become more active.
Other wise, I'll toss Pointers, Rogues or Husky Jerks. I might have all 3 tied on 3 rods since it seems the fish can be particular at times.
I like them both but prefer the LC Pointer if I had to chose.
I've solved the problem...
Went to BPS today and spent a bunch of money on LC pointers, and Xraps. Now I just need some snow/ice to melt, and April to come to test em.
XRAP! Cheeper and more available for when you loose them!

Well done!
I just tried out my first Lucky Craft lure... Pointer 100 suspending model... Was out for about an hour and a half and got 3 nice fish on it! Runs beautiful and I think I'm already in love with LC. Gimme about 2 more nice fish and it'll be worth the price tag! ;D
I think it comes down to which one you have confidence in.
I get my Pointers on E-Bay and X-Raps there and when on sale at BPS.
Losing an X-rap hurts a little less than a Pointer. Pike and Musky love them.
Anyone else like Bomber Long A's? I've caught more fish on this than first 2 combined, but have been using it for 20+ years.
They just started selling Long A's at my local Wal-Mart and I picked up a few of 'em. They had Smithwick's as well... Very nice change since they haven't updated the fishing section in a long time!
Lost my Pointer already. :'( :'( :'(
QuoteLost my Pointer already. :'( :'( :'(
I feel your pain, I lost three brand new pointers the last tournament I fished, two to snapped line and one to a big muskie (swallowed my 128). The week before that I lost one at the boat when a 5.5lb smallie slipped out of my hand and broke my line (that one hurt the most :'()
i allways have fished xraps and loved them so i decided to try a pointer and i was very dissapionted i have yet to catch a fish on it
Quotei allways have fished xraps and loved them so i decided to try a pointer and i was very dissapionted i have yet to catch a fish on it
The Pointer is just like any other lure, you have to fish it when the situation calls for it. You can't just throw it out any time and expect to catch bass. Try fishing it in the same time of year that you have had success with X-Raps, then you can make a fair decision if you like them or not.
I quit counting after losing 7+ X-Raps/Husky Jerks to toothy critters last season. If they were pointers, I would have been too sick to fish. I just can't justify paying that much more money when they are all very similar.
The LC Pointers hands down! The bait suspends forever and is very durable. I don't mind paying more money for a quality bait such as these.
stick to x-raps and long a's
I fish Rogues and X-raps, and the Rogues are more consitent catchers for me.
Sorry, never tried a Pointer.
:-/
Pointer cannot be beat when the water temps are in the upper 30s and low 40s. I sometimes have leave the bait sit there for 1 min before twitching it. The pointer will suspend there perfectly. Xraps are great too when the fish are more active. Both have a spot in the tackle box.
I am surprised no one has mentioned the LC Staycee 95. That lure might be the best of them all.

The LC Pointers are often on sale at BPS. Usually they are unadvertised "in-store specials". You need to pick up a couple.

I fish both, and I can honestly say my X-Raps outfish the Pointers.

Agreed, you can also find some good deals on ebay from time to time.
Pointer hands down
I would rather use the Pointers, but I use X-Raps more. The reason: I would rather lose my $7 X-Rap to a Pike than my $15 Pointer. I think I mentioned this in another post of mine---I HATE PIKE >!!!
