Me and my fishing buddy went out on the ol' john boat tonight to do some fishing in one of our favorite ponds. My buddy caught two decent bass, but despite the success, it seemed like we lost more lures than we caught fish! It seems like we are bound to lose a lure or two during the course of a day on the water. I want to know if this is typical, or just plain bad luck on our part.
How many lures do you guys lose during the course of a day on the water? Do you lose more from a boat or from the shore?
depends on what lure im fishing i go through plastic the most then depend were im fishing if im fishing in a lot of junk a lot if clear water not too many
Crankbaits not that often but did lose one today.
Spinnerbaits maybe 3 or 4 a season.
I can mostly position the boat where I can retrieve most of them.
Jigs is another story.
In real heavy cover I can lose a few.
All depends, I fish a lot of jigs, so I lose 2-3 a week depending on where I am fishing. Mostly from getting lodged in rocks. I lose my favorite swim jig that has produced for me all year yesterday, broke my heart because they are back order till middle of july! Oh well, nature of the beast I guess.
If I am wacky wormin' I will usually get a few lose hooks as well.
Usually I average 1-3 a week if I fish everyday, sometimes 0, all depends. Once I get a kayak soon I hope, I am going to my local pond to get a few back that are in a easily reachable tree branch
Fishing out of a boat I rarely lose any, most of the time I can get them back.

Now, on the other hand, if I'm on a really good school of fish I may be tempted to break something off far more so I don't spook them.
I lose a lot of tackle. I also fish from shore so I don't have a lot of chances in recovery. I also took a long hiatus from fishing and haven't gotten my accuracy back yet so that is a lot of my problem.
In a boat you can just go to the other side of where the lure is stuck and it will usually pop right out. I think it's probably ture that if you aren't getting hung up every once in a while you aren't fishing the right spots.
This is one subject in bass fishing that I think I am past. I don't get very upset when I lose a lure and it happens every so often. Between the heavy plug knocker and a long pole I can get most cranks/jerkbaits back. Soft plastics/jigs I am much more likely to break off, more as a time saving move more than anything else.
Should I get stuck on braid or 20 lb Abrazx, I've cut my fingers a couple of times from trying to yank my bait out. Now when I get stuck on those lines, I make 3 or 4 wraps around a boat cleat and back it off with the trolling motor. Often I break the branch and get my whole rig back.

thats why i love braid sometimes. and sometimes there some goodies on the that branch you pulled up
It depends on the lure, cranks ---> it´s been years since I´ve lost a crank, spinnerbaits ---> the same, jigs ---> man, jig I tie seldomly returns safe and sound to the t-box for further use, heck, you got no idea how many jigs I´ve lost on the first cast, and yeah, brand new out of the package, it´s some kind of tax I have to pay, but if you don´t throw them where they can hang up and get lost you ain´t throwing them where the fish are.

Lol almost did that this afternoon! I tied on my new bitsy bug jig and got it stuck in a submerged tree branch on my first cast. Luckily, I was able to troll around to the other side of the branch and rip it out. Happend a few hours later with a senko as well. I'm happy to say that I didn't lose any tonight! Lucky me.
Any tackle shop would go out of business if they relied on me. I have not bought a freshwater lure in close to a year, and can think of only 1 I lost. Saltwater is another story, I lose something every time fish, which is daily, jigs are not counted, a fish or 2 and they are toast, not too mention snags. Lures get cut off, corroded and snagged almost daily. I just ordered 30 bucktails and 5 packs of DOA jerk shads.
I loose lures way too often Im afraid. I fish 99% from the bank and have been loosing lures relatively often, at $20 a pop, its a painful process. But like folks say, if your not getting hung up your not fishin in the right areas.

Since I spend 90% of my time flipping and pitching jigs and or punching grass mats I unfortunately lose a lot of tackle : ( I buy jigs in bulk now so I don't have I constantly buy them I probably lose at least 1-3 per trip. I just order them 50 ata time because I only use 2 colors, when punching though very rarely do I find something tougher than 65lb pp so I don't lose rigs often that way
I used to loose a lot when I first started, I was not sure what a bite felt like so I would automatically set the hook only to find it was a branch or something, fishing from a boat has helped but I still get hung from time to time and loose a lure or two about once a year.
There are times when I know I am going to loose one or two, especially if I find some heavy cover with a small pocket to fish, if I know there is a great chance of loosing it, the first thing I will toss will be a soft plastic of some sort to minimise the expence of replacing a lure, thats not to say I wont throw an expencive lure into cover like that but I will try to at least get em with the plastic first.
I usually lose one deep diving crank bait a week (3-4 tournaments-rodeos/week), depending on the type of fishing I'm doing can vary with other things. Lately a football head has been great, but I usually lose 3-4 per tournament same with a texas rig, several of them because I don't want to go over the fish and the other is just because these lakes are not close to being scarce of rocks of all kinds.
I haven't lost a topwater in a long time. And everything else is relatively the same...I don't lose them unless its a freak accident (squirrel fishing, don't retie, stuff like that)
I usually fish off shore. But sometimes on the boat. I'll get a few snags. Last weekend I lost my favorite worm( frankly, it was my last worm) , it must of got hooked something and I had to break the line. It sucks.
I go through texas rigs regularly, atleast 1-2 per hour whether its from the boat or bank. I tend to lose crankbaits even faster, but I recently purchased a plug knocker so hopefully that cuts the cost down dramatically. Rarely do I lose a topwater plug, but it has happened.
Now a days not to many. I learned the hard way not to throw cranks from the bank.
Since i started using braid i only lost two hardbaits to muskie, but i go through soft plastics like theres no tomorrow.
Man, I have used a bag of senko under 2 hours.
My avarage is probably 2-3 hard baits per trip, and half bag of plastics.
i agree with the theory that fishing in the heavy cover produces fish. but i think most fisherman use WAY too light of a line when trying to do so. i fish from shore 50% of the time and only use 12lb flouro, 20 lb braid and 65 lb braid depending on the application. All my reels are spooled with braid so I can tie direct (very convenient) or add a 6ft leader in finesse situations. I rarely lose lures OR break off fish. the other 50% of time i'm in my kayak or canoe. 99% of the time i can get a lure free by paddling over and/or using a homemade lure knocker. also from a boat i can get away with lighter line b/c its easier to fight them in open water. i've noticed the guys that brag about how light a line they can use are also the ones that spend a fortune on lures and always have stories about monster bass that broke their line. when really a 3lb girl wrapped them around a rock/timber and snapped their 6lb like a twig
Since I have bought a lure retreiver about 10 years ago I can count the number of cranks I have lost since then on one hand. One of the best purchases I have made. I remember seeing them things on the shelves chuckling to myself thinking they were a joke till one day I lost about $50 worth of cranks and bought one thinking what do I have to lose for a $6 dollar lure retreiver. I have literaly saved hundreds of dollars since. Also have caught way more fish because it took the fear of loosing cranks out of the picture. Jigs and other soft platics I still loose my share of but they cost no where near what cranks cost. So I'm OK dealing with that.
I am unfortunately bank bound. Having said that, I've only been bass fishing for 7 months now and, not counting the soft plastics the bass throws off as I'm bringing them in, I have lost:
1 Spook (in tree)
2 Topwater frogs Rebel Frog-R and Scum Frog (in tree)
1 Spinnerbait (bad tying)
2 Lipless Crankbaits (bad tying again)
1 Rapala DT 8'-11' (hung on some submerged object)
1 Bomber model A shallow (broke off on a bass but someone else caught the same bass a few minutes later so I got it back)
And a few soft plastics (in tree)
I don't think that's too bad. The one's in tree is because I'm just crazy enough to throw them near trees. Most times I can get them back and 50% of the time I land a bass. I've had 2 bass take off with my lure after I got the line hung over some bush limbs. I brought them in though.
I lose lots of jigs but crankbaits hardly ever get lost. Can rip those free most of the time. The ones I do lose get made up for the ones I find.
Since I bought a telescoping lure retriever I rarely lose a hardbait, jigs and plastics are another story. I lose lots of shakeyheads and jigs to rocks and trees but I make my own so they really don't hurt that bad to lose other than the time and effort I put into them. I fish a lot and the only hardbait I've lost this year was a popper that must have blown out of my boat off the console.
