I have never used these..have always opted to tie direct to the line tie or split ring that comes on the bait. Besides ease of changing baits what are the benefits of using a snap? What brands do you prefer? Sorry if this topic has been beat to death in the past

The other benefit is not having to concern yourself with your knot working its way into the split ring. I prefer oval split rings for crankbaits, but have gone the route of using snaps the last few seasons. I prefer duolock snaps. A number of companies offer them. As with any terminal connection, be sure that the snap is up to the force it may be placed under. A small, thin wire snap doesn't match up to a big, deep diving crank.

The other option you don't hear a lot about is tying directly with a loop, or double loop knot. They're easy and quick to tie and allow the bait plenty of free movement. The only downside to them is you'll want to retie more often, especially when using big cranks.

Use them on spinnerbaits, crankbaits, chatterbaits, jerkbaits, swimbaits, etc. Never had an issue with one failing. I have been hung up and broke the line before the snap broke. I actually got hung up with a chatterbait one time with 40lb braid and broke the chatterbait snap but not the Owner.

I use VMC Crankbait snaps in size 0 for treble hook baits up to 1/2oz, then go up to a size 1 for anything up to 1 oz. Decoy makes an excellent snap- you will find them on ZMan jackhammer chatterbaits.

I used to tie directly to the split ring but saw the light a few years back and started using snaps.

I since remove all the factory split rings from all my crankbaits and use a snap. I'm pretty sure I use VMC brand but don't remember the size.

I used VMC's forever, they're great. I got sick of them catching grass, though, and switched to tactical clips.

I still use VMC'S for some topwater baits, though.

I use them on crankbaits/rattle traps. I purchased mine on eBay, 100 pack under $5.00. I've never had an issue using them, I'll have enough of them for a couple decades.

I use fly snaps from Orvis. They come in two sizes and are very strong. Makes changing cranks really fast.

With my stubby arthritic fingers, I find it easier to tie a knot that manipulate a snap, so that's what I do.

Either the Micro 25 LB or the 50 LB size. They make it so fast to change baits and easy when your hands are cold.

Tactical Anglers is Alberto Knie's company. He is the guy who came up with the Alberto knot. I met him at a fishing show and he is a really cool guy and very generous about sharing his striper knowledge. He gave me some clips too.

I have used several brands of snaps over the years. The strongest lower cost snap is Berkley Cross Lock but not the easiest to close properly. The weakest being Dual Lock type snaps that tend to open occasionally if not properly closed.

Owner Hyper Weld size 1* /33lb are expensive, light weight and excellent snap for diving crankbaits. VMC snap tends to pop open hitting the rod tip.

I never use a snap swivel combination with bass lures.

I'm pretty sure either the small or medium ones. I bought a 100 piece bulk pack like 3 years ago, so I'm not positive. I think I still have like 90 of em, though????

Not at all considering they are used to catch very large trout....fierce fighters.

Actually the Owner size 2 is the 46 lb. I use the size 0(26 lb) most of the time but will sometimes use the 1's(33 lb) on larger swimbaits. Mainly because of ease of use and usually fishing open water so I am not as concerned with grass as I am with a squarebill or lipless.

Mustad Fastach for a while. You'll need to replace them regularly but they are very fast on/off. If they get bent out at all you'll need to replace.

Now, p-line tactical for midsize and tactical angler "micro" for small.

Using snaps helps you change baits fast and efficiently, especially in tournaments.

Easier to tie your favorite knot on a snap then a split ring.

I use a size that I can easily snap open and close.

Go to your local tackle shop and look a the selections and the sizes available and which ones you believe you can open and close, easily.

PRO SECRET: Buzzbaits and spinnerbaits have open ended places to tie your line. If you are using a snap for these two presentations I suggest you go to a lawn and garden center tractor repair shop and ask them to sell you a foot of yellow fuel line for riding mowers. Check the size of the hole to make sure it fits over the ends. Take a buzzbait and spinnerbait with you so you can figure out which size of fuel line is best.

Cut the yellow fuel line into a number of small 1/16 +/- sections and place them over the ends of the buzz baits and spinnerbaits. You can now use a snap when throwing these baits as the yellow tubing will hold your snap in place and not let it run up the wire and foul your presentation.

I keep my cut fuel line tubings in an old Rx pill container or on the buzzbaits and spinnerbaits in their tackle boxes.

Just a small suggestion to make life easier when fishing.

No, never and just think of the huge trout the fly guys have to land with them. Incredibly strong little snaps.

I fished for 20+ years thinking snaps where junk and direct tie was the only way to go. Then about 4 years ago I tried the Hyper Weld and it made me realize how much easier it is to change on the fly.

Now, that being said. Think about this. When you do change a lure you are cutting off line that could be damaged so in turn that is a good thing. Same thing applies with snaps, it is a good idea to check the snap often and retie as needed. I am guilty of using the same snap without checking it and retying and thus breaking off on either a fish or getting hung up. IMO that is the only downfall of using a snap is not retying it often enough.

im gonna try the small tactical angler clips for square bills and cranks, but im curious as to will this be noticeable to the fish ? everyone puts so much concern in line size and type and colors etc because of visibility etc... but a snap r clip is very noticeable... or maybe im over thinking this? but being able to change a crank bait quickly sure would be nice.

I almost never used snaps, with the mindset that fish would shy away from extra hardware. The fact that fish will bite a Tokyo rig has pretty much put that idea to rest, so I think I'll be using them more in the future. Anyone use them on non-finesse jigs?

Yea, we have to try to fool the fish with an invisible line but don't worry about the giant wire hooks lol

I have always used snaps. I am not brand loyal. Mine have come from ebay, as well as buying Bass Pro Shop branded snaps. As long as it's the right size, I'm good. I have never had them fail.

I saw the picture above where someone put a piece of rubber/nylon banding on a spinner bait in order to use a snap. I never thought of that! Holy crap! game changer. I'd probably be more inclined to use the spinnerbait now. Hate retying!
