Best Pliers Under $100 2025

fishing user avatarChris at Tech reply :

Anyone have a recommendation for a good set of pliers under $100?

i have a pair of the Browning pliers from Bass Pro but I am less impressed each time I use them. Looking for pliers that come with a sheath and lanyard, can cut braid and are saltwater approved.

fishing user avatarDiablos reply :

I use these in both saltwater and freshwater

fishing user avataraquaholic reply :

$400 dollars for pliers ??????????????????????????????????????????????????? Is that a joke? I could pay someone to take the hook out for a complete season for less than that most likely.

fishing user avatarCaylub reply :

I thought $100 dollars for pliers was a joke.

fishing user avatarChris at Tech reply :

I've gone through too many pairs of cheap pliers, but also not ready to fork over the coin for the Van Staals :)

I just buy new Rapalas every year.  Check this out.....

I have a buddy who has a pair of P-Line pliers.  He likes them a lot and they are holding up really well.  He doesn't use them in salt though.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

"fishermen's pliers" = needle nose pliers.........go to your local part house and buy a quality pair for under $20

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I use regular, cheap needle nose pliers too.  Although, I do see the benefit of well made, rust free, aluminum pliers with quality side cutters.  It would be hard for me to pay over $50 for them though.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I just purchased a split ring pliers and a hook remover pliers from the auction site. I also carry a wooden scent box that has a stainless operating pliers in it too.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I use these, they work well.

The line snips they sell are very good too.

fishing user avatarDiablos reply :

Saltwater fishermen know what the ocean can do to gear including cheap pliers. The Van Staal pliers are not for everyone but a online search will show that they are purchased and discussed more than you may think.

A 100% freshwater fisherman could easily buy a cheap pair of stain-free needle nose pliers and have them last a while. There is no denying that there is a market for everything in between.

another option is stainless forceps, surgery pliers or whatever they are called......you can probably pick them up at any medical supply store.

Those are split ring pliers.  I wouldn't want to use those for my every day pliers.   Plus, Texas Tackle makes the best split ring pliers on the market, IMO.

Try these

I use these, they go on sale down to $20 at times http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=GSX-Titanium-Plier&i=449487 they cut braid. Only problem I've had was the pocket hook came out but I wedged it back in so it's still good

I think you're referring to hemostats.

No problem.

I have them with me all the time, excellent for smaller and deeper hooked fish

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I have owned quite a few of the braid pliers and the cutters always seem to go bad after awhile, I don't care for the ones that are not rubberized.  I'm using a $12 pair now, been working fine for a couple of years.  One of my buddies buys his at Sears, gets a little rust and it's a no question return and exchange, he's been doing it for the last 15 years.  I buy Walmart pliers for $1.88, lasts 6 months and I pitch them, I did find an inexpensive pair pliers a few years ago freshwater fishing that have lasted real well.  I burn my braid, not hung up anymore about about the braid cutting pliers.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

The fly shop at the Bass Pro in Auburn sells these hemo - scissors with an orange coated handle. Probably the best tool I've found for removing hooks and cutting line, including braid.

You can sort of see them in this picture:

Sick.  Probably going to pick those up actually.

May it appease the gear monkey...

fishing user avatarplumworm reply :

Needle nose: $2.00 at Dollar store, I buy a half dozen at a time and they are all over the boat. Braid scissors $5 at BPS 2-3 pair in the boat. Side cutters, $2.00 at Dollar store, one pair on deck, one in tool box. Hemostat, 1 8" pair for deep hooked fish. don't remember what they cost but under $10.00. Give them a shot of WD40 couple of times a year and they last forever. Under $40.00 for all these tools and if I drop one over the side I don't loose $100.00 and I have a replacement close by.

fishing user avatarFrogFreak reply :

The day I spend $400 for pliers is the day I can't fish anymore because I'll be institutionalized.

fishing user avataraceman387 reply :

I usually go the dollar store quality when it comes to pliers.I pitch them at the end of the year and i buy a new pair in the spring.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I also looked at the Van Staal pliers for grins. Yes, they are more money than most of us would spend for pliers, but let's face it guys, most of us spend far more money on fishing than makes sense to most of the folks we know. I rarely fish salt water, but it does challenge equipment more...I have a couple of pairs of decent construction grade needle nose pliers with side cutters, and a cheap set of stainless cutters that have served me well. A little WD 40 occasionally and I'm good to go.

fishing user avatarBuckMaxx reply :

  • Rapala pliers and WD 40 I can buy a lot of them for 100!

Hemocuts!!  That's it!  Thanks.

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

X2 on the gander mountain GSX pliers, best pair I'veever owned.

fishing user avatarChris at Tech reply :

Are the Gander pliers well-constructed?  They look to be similar in concept to the Browning/BPS pliers I have, but the problem I see with the Browning is that they're not manufactured very well, as the tolerances appear rather poor.  The jaws and the cutters get to a point where they're no longer pinching totally closed, so obviously this makes cutting lines an issue.

fishing user avataraquaholic reply :

this is what i use to cut braid. http://www.rockynational.com/product/Gerber/Knives/22-41830/EAB-Pocket-Knife?gclid=CM60ovyj07kCFfBcMgodLEUAfg

when it goes dull i put another razor in.

Give these a spin. No cutting abilities, but nail-clippers will do that for you.

I've been buying Snap-On for about 25 years and often wonder why because some of their tools are excessively expensive, but after seeing $300+ for those Van Staals, I don't feel so bad. Add: I make money with my Snap-On tools too.
