Best Discontinued Lure 2024

fishing user avatarLucky Craft Man reply :

I love the Rapala Weedless Spoon and when I found out they were no longer being made, I stocked up wherever I could find them.  The Speed Shad is another good discontinued lure.

I was wondering what do you guys think is the best lure that was discontinued?

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

The Rapala Rattiling Fat Rap.....one of my favorite cranks of all time. I don't even have any more either. My last one swam away clenched in the jaws of a pike who bit me off a couple years ago :'(. I keep my eye out for them at flea markets and on e-bay but my god the last one I saw on e-bay sold for $32........I didn't like it that much ;D. I also used to really like the floating Rat-L-Traps that had a lip on them like a normal crank bait, they were deadly over submerged eel grass on my home lake in early spring. Don't have any more of those either. For soft plastics, most of my old favorites are still made, but in the pre-senko era I loved the little 4" Berkley power finesse worm, I still have a pack or two of them, but they have not been made in years.

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

Gene Larew old recipe 8" hooktail worm in  Tomatoe color.  This worm was a bright blood red, and was ridiculously soft...as soft as a Senko and tore just as easily.  It just slayed fish.  Gene Larew switched to a different 'recipe', and plastic is totally different, as is the color.  I'd gladly pay $20 a bag if I could find some.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Fred Arbogast Mudbug.

fishing user avatarPa Angler reply :

BPS 3.5" Hi-Back shiner in black & silver.

fishing user avatarcastaway reply :

The Cotton Cordell Minnow spot rattle traps. The Dalton special. I have picked up dozens of the minnow spots still new in the packs, but lost my last Dalton last summer and I haven't ran across any since. Ivan

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

IMHO, one of the greatest plastic worms of all time....the FLIPTAIL.  Bill Dance used to fish with these almost exclusively (his pre-infomercial days), and I cut my worm fishing teeth on them.  I still have a couple of bulk bags of the little Fliptail Flirts (6" with a small hooktail on them) in Motor Oil and Grape colors.  The originals were a 7" long straight tail.  I'd LOVE to see these come back.

fishing user avatar0119 reply :

Yo-zuri Tobimaru Jr. in gold olive with black back.  Also a 10" worm with a straight paddle ended tail called the Baby Huey.   BPS told me, available no more.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

A few.

Old Ditto Gatortail worms. Zoom is making a close replica called the G tail though.

Rebel Super R.  I've caught some big bass on these.

Norman jerk baits.  They only made them a year or so. All of them in their sunshine gelcoat finish.

Pre-Rapala Storm Wiggle Warts.  The Rapala "original" Wiggle Warts just don't cut the mustard.

Buzzin Rex spoon.  I've finally found out Rex is still in business and making the spoon.

fishing user avatarrocknfish9001 reply :

I caught my first 4lb. bass on one of those rapala spoons! I loved those lures. Anyways one that was pretty good for me that they dont make anymore was by renowsky lures, i think. It is a little rubber snake head that floats and you put your worm in front of it, makes it look like a snake swimming on top of the water. Great in slop/lillies. More strikes than frogs, but it seemed like less hookups.

Im a little young to see that many lures come and go, so that is all i can think of.

fishing user avatarTucson reply :

Ditto on the Rapala weedless spoon.  I just have one and kinda hate to throw it.  The Johnson Silver Minnow is my replacement, works pretty well if you don't mind spending an evening sharpening that clunky hook they come with.  ;)

fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

THE BOMBER "SQUARE A".  WHEN I FOUND OUT THEY WERE NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION I WENT TO BPS AND BOUGHT A BUNCH OF THEM.

fishing user avatarCrazedL.IFisherman reply :

Another for the bomber square a, rockin' daddy soft bait lure by bps, and lastly pogo minnow by tom mann

fishing user avatarMunkin reply :

Rapala OCW color! I know it is not a lure but I love that color especially for fat raps. That Rapala spoon that some of you posted about I have one that is firetiger if anyone wants it let me know what you have to trade?

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Like Lucky Craft man, the old Bomber Speed Shad is a great bait and I usually buy all I can get my hands on. The original Clark Water Scout or the older, wood, Spence Scout with metal hardware are my favorite shallow water design.

fishing user avatarrocknfish9001 reply :

Whittler, strike king is re-making the old spence scout, complete with metal hardware and everything. They kept the old vintage design.

Munkin, I found a website that still sells that color and the weedless spoons!

fishing user avatarrocknfish9001 reply :

never mind, they are selling the spoons with trebles. I didnt know rapala made spoons with trebles..... Anyways, you can get a bunch of discontinued colors if you want to pay $10 or more.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

The Rattling Fat Rap was good but the Shallow Running Fat Rap.........golllly molllly ! lethal is the best way to describe it.

Heddon 's Sonics and Super Sonics are still my favorite lipless cranks.

Ahhh...good old Rapala weedless spoon.  I have a tackle box full just of those (I went a little purchase crazy when I found out they weren't going to make them anymore).  I use them a lot and they work great especially dragging them over extremely thick weed mats where the a snagless softbody frog doesn't have enough weight to alert the bass it is there.  If anyone out there works for Rapala, could you tell me why you discontinued this lure?  I might start a campaign to bring back the Rapala weedless spoon (though I do have a lifetime supply already).

fishing user avatarZel... reply :

Bobby Garland's HARD TIMES GRUB.

They really did work when things were tough. When I heard they were going to stop making them I bought several 100 count bags (over 10 years ago). Now down to only around 50 or so left.... ARRHH!

fishing user avatartexasbass1 reply :

Rapala Risto Rap and Gator tail worms

fishing user avatarBud reply :

Lucky Craft Combat.  I try to buy every one that I find.

fishing user avatarThe_Bass_Whisperer reply :

I found a site that tells abuot the speed shad and why it was discontinued ;)

http://www.jimporter.org/articles/article88.shtml

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Bass-Whisperer, Porter's article on the Speed Shad is dead on, they are fish catching machines but they cast like a kite. You really have to see them at work in the water and feel them through your hands to fully appreceiate what they can do.

Thanks for the link.

John

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

Another one I'll add is the old Ozark Mountain Kingfisher.  I still have three.  They're at their best in the slop.  Kind of a cross between a spoon and a ????.  Even trying to describe them would be rather difficult.  I'll try and dig one of mine out and get a photo posted here.  Absolutely OUTSTANDING on matted weeds or coming through the thick stuff.

fishing user avatarThe_Bass_Whisperer reply :

Sory, I forgot to add the site with the lure Picture.

FYI: I have seen a lot if not most of the lures here mentioned on the site below

All lures I have seen there also have pictures

It is the best and most comprehensive site for old, used, or

DISCONTINUED LURES

*!1 Problem; Very Disorgnised So Look Around It is Probaly there and don't forgit the little Assorted box thingies, there is great stuff there if, and I mean IF, you know what you are looking for, because the names arn't alwayse written there and by some stuff there are question marks because they arn't sure. Over All VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY good

The discontinued Fat Raps are also my all time favorite. I still have 6 or so and still get all tense when one gets hung knowing I will probably not be able to replace it. Those cranks have bailed me out more times than I can remember...

That's the one!!  Wobble it over weeds/slop until it comes to an opening, then kill it and let it flutter down.
