fishing user avatarKsam1234 reply :

Some guys were out today in the lake just killing it with bedding bass .. I wasn’t able to see them but they could see them clear as day. With TW sale going on I’m wondering what is s good pair of glasses for specifically sight fishing. He mentioned costas but wasn’t sure what kind.. price Range is 150-175$

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

I have a pair of Costas and two pair of Oakleys. I like the Costas better. My Costas are Jose's with 580p green lenses.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

If you don't need prescription glasses you have more options to choose from. Polarized are essential and glass verses polycarbinate is another factor to consider along with color.

Most sight anglers prefer dark Amber color to highlite the greens in bass and lower light conditions. I prefer dark gray for normal or brighter sunlight conditions.

For prescriptions Maui Jim and Oakely are popular.

No I don’t need prescription. Just want a decent pair of polarized to see he smallmouth , should have stated I’m after smallmouth

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Medium Amber or copper is a good all around color, mirrored lens helps to cut glare in bright light.

Maybe some of the smallie anglers can give you some advice.

I have a pair of Costa 580G Rafael's in the green mirror.  I am amazed at how deep I can see with them in stained water.  I would suggest going to a nearby store that carries them and trying some on to find the ones you like, then get on eBay and buy them!  Got mine for $100 less than in the store.

I have Old Guys eyes and need 'readers' while fishing to rig and what not.

I have a few pairs of ONO's.  I really like them.

I have Blue (brightest days) and Grey (lower light or less sunny) lenses.

I do not bed fish - if I did, I'd wear amber.

 Good Luck

I wear amber lenses on $5-$15 glasses everywhere I fish. I'm not saying that is the way to go, but it works pretty well for me!

Because I have Amber and Blue in my Oakleys and wanted to try green. I also had Grey in a pair of Oakleys that are now at the bottom of Sardis Lake.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Nearly as important as polarized sunglasses is keeping glare out and the lens shape is very important to cover the sides  near the temples and a non reflective wide brim hat.

fishing user avatarwebertime reply :

In Costa the mirror green is an amber base.  Blue mirror is the grey base.  I run Costas in an Amber(green mirror) year round.  You can find good deals on Costas if you look, I got a pair of Permits (plastic lenses) for $66 last week brand new.

Plastic (polycarbonate) vs glass lenses...  polycarbonate doesn't shatter when a tungsten weight hits them.  Glass seems clearer.

The green mirror is an Amber base!  I find the green mirror helps me see through dirty water better.  May just be me!

costa green mirror in glass lens. get it. you are welcome. if you want one for lower light they make a silver for low light conditions. I have both and use accordingly. i do not fish salt or I would have some blue as well

Costa’s green mirror in 580 is copper based.  Not sure about the 400.  Straight from Costa’s website.

I forgot to mention that I own 3 different types of polarized glasses for fishing.  I would rank them in this order:

Costa Blackfin Green Mirror 580p (Copper) $120

Wiley X Twisted Emerald Mirror (Amber) $80

Nines Optics Havasu Green Mirror (Amber) $60

Did not need these last year, but I sure could have used these today. Where do you like to buy them from?

Dark grey for the sun and amber for low light conditions is what I use.

@Crankin4Bass

Amazon usually has the best prices.

I go to the website and check out styles & frames.

Pick out the ones I want and then get them on Amazon.

If not available there I just get them from ONOS.

I have a pair of Oakley Flak 2.0s with amber prizm lenses that work really well for sight fishing.  The fit is good at blocking glare from your cheek bones and temples.  Also the vibrance/contrast of the lenses is much better than my Ray-Ban Polarized glass lenses, even though they are a plastic lens.

I haven't tried Costas, although i'd like to.  But, the Oakleys do so well I don't see myself buying another pair of glasses soon.

I use a grey lense prescription pair of SPY polarized. Pretty hefty on the cost but my employer covers all cost of ANSI Z87.1 frames and lenses.

I have a couple pairs of Costa 580Gs, my fishing buddy has Wiley X. We were fishing last weekend and he was spotting every bedder, I couldnt see any. We swapped glasses, he raved how much better my Costa 580Gs were compared to his Wileys. I still couldnt see any bedders. lol.

So it’s safe to say you just  need eyeballs ? Lol jk

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

Had a bunch of different gray lens Oakley’s for years... tried on some green mirror Costas and it was game over.  No idea what I’d been missing all these years.  They work in all light conditions very well and the contrast to see in the water is so superior.  They warm everything up too - my wife steals them from me during our gloomy/endless winters in Minnesota and calls them “Prozac for the eyes...”

fishing user avatarzell_pop1 reply :

I had Costa 580Gs and Kaenons, I found no difference in visual quality. Both are better than the Wiley Xs I have. Kaenon and Smith Optics both have a Trivex lens, so do the Costa prescriptions. They are light and strong like Polycarbonates, but have visuals like glass, basically best of both worlds.

fishing user avatarjunyer357 reply :

I have 2 pairs of costas. One with 580g green mirror and one with 580p sunrise silver mirror.

I thought the green mirror was the ticket for sight fishing, til i tried the sunrise silver mirror. I could see much better with them. Its a yellow base with a siver mirror outer finish. Its a 30% light transmit compared to the 10ish% green mirror.  So it lets in much more light while still cutting glare from water, allowing me to see better under water

Its a specialty lens for me though, it will give you a sun headache if you rely on them alone all day on a bright full sun day, because the let in much more light. I only wear them sight fishing, on cloudy days, or early mornings and late evenings. I usually start with them at daylight and switch back to the green mirror after the sun gets up good. Great glasses for driving at blastoff too when its light out, but the sun isnt up over horizon yet.
