What is the best attractant out there?
Its one that has been around for years but you cant buy it. Its Called "CONFIDENCE". The second best well we call that MegaStrike. Confidence + Megastrike = More fish
Sorry but their is no such thing , it's all a matter of personal choice.
I agree with Bass-Brat. Its whatever one works for you. This site pushes megastrike. Just try a few of them and figure out which one you like.
I've been using Yum Garlic for years with good results but like others have said it's all a matter of personal preference. I like JJ's and Carolina Lunker sauce too but they are too high maintenance for me so I always resort back to Yum.
Nothing in this world can attract a bass to a bait and make it eat it just because it smells good. They may make a bass hold onto a bait a little longer after he strikes though.
I was a mate on a friends charter boat for about 5 years back in the 80's. We tried an experiment with different attractants. Half the lures had attractant, the other half did not. We used the same baits and colors during the season. The baits with attractants outfished the ones without 4 to 1. The brand didn't seem to make a difference. You be the judge.

What were you fishing For? Bass?
More likely trout and salmon, given location. Salmonoids have a much more developed olfactory system than bass, and scent plays a big part in getting bit, or driving biters away. Yes, oils from human skin will drive them away from lures.
Put one drop of lemon in a large pool of water and tell me if you can taste or smell it? I believe that theory...you probably won't taste/smell anything.Put it directly in your mouth then you will taste/smell it.
Same Theory applies for Bass.
best attracant is poo
Two of our sponsors offer great products:
JJ's Magic http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/bass-fishing-jjs-magic.html
MegaStrike http://www.megastrikefishingproducts.com/shop/Fish-Attractants/
Try them and see what you think!
I am not sure what to call it' but one thing for sure the action of your bait is the best attractant. Another thing I know for sure is that these products will make bass hold on longer. Maybe we should call it STICK EM.
Megastrike and smelly jelly are the only ones I've used that are worth a darn, and even they don't really trigger a lot of extra bites, but they will trigger a few, plus mask bad scents and help a bass hold onto a bait longer.
Up in the northeast here it seems Smelly Jelly and Bioedge seem to have a good amount of popularity.

I think that's the main reason for using an attractant. I figure if it buys me an extra second to set the hook, that's a good thing.
I use megastrike, my tournament partner uses Gulp! Alive and we both catch fish. IMO it's about NOT smelling like me and smelling like something that lives in the water. As far as a best one, the smelly stuff you have on your bait as you throw it in the water is the best (In otherwords, just use whatever, they all do the job). I forgot to mention, another thing I have done is use a Gulp! Alive minnow on the trailer hook of my spinners. Seemed to work really well for white perch, for some reason the bass weren't all that into it. Mayber it was time of year, who knows?
I have tried just about all them since the 80's and for me anyways, Megastrike just plain works period! Like Bobby says, Confidence plus Megastrike is the ticket.
Not only do I get more strikes, I believe it has helped my hookup ratio tremendously, especially when used on hollow body frogs and other topwater lures. They get a taste of that stuff and they don't want to let go.
Now its no more magic then a Spro Frog, you still have to be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing, but it is IMO something that ups the odds in getting that strike from those bass of whom ignore your offering even if your meeting the above requirements.
It;s like this, you could maybe make your dog respond to a toy hot dog, but wave a real hot dog in front of his face and he will go nuts trying to get it from you. Meagstrike is no toy, it's turns your lures into the real deal, at least from a bass's point of view. It looks real, it smells real, it taste real, BAM!
Everyone could promote there favorite one but the main thing is covering up human scent. Attractants dont work every time no matter what anyone says. The first attractant was Jacks Juice and not sure it was around in the 80s. Fish Formula was behind it I believe. Now there are new ones popping up everywhere. lol

You are correct,it was trout and salmon on lake michigan. The point was it didn't matter what brand of attractant. How it relates to other fish species would be just a guess. I feel that masking other scents on lures may be a big part of it.
I just dont use them

I agree and feel there are times when topical scents are right. I call it "Hit and Hold" or "Hit and Spit". Paying particular attn to any baits that have been below the deck rigged on a rod or set on the deck for an extended time or maybe still rigged from a past fishing trip...these are the ones I apply Megastrike or touch with JJ's as needed.
I'm OCD about some things and scent is one of them. Many of us have noticed that a fresh bait seems to draw more strikes and most of the manufactured baits today have scents added which work well straight out of the bag. But the scents mentioned, also work if you need to freshen up a bait for the hit and hold time. It's also extremely useful for kids and less experienced fishermen who have a hard time detecting strikes.
The additional lube that Megastrike provides is nice for sliding soft plastics thru thick grass and reeds too. I just squeeze some in a used re-sealable bait bag and massage rigged baits in it

In the world of bass fishing there is 2 words that I absolutely believe are the wrong nomenclatures, fish finder is one and attractant is the other.
I prefer depth finder & worm juice!
No substance known to man will "attract" bass when applied to your lure but there are many that will make the bass hold on longer. Salt cooked into the plastic and 100% anise oil (not essence) are at the top of my list of "best".
I use "worm juice" for two purposes first as a lubricant because I fish in grass a lot and the "worm juice" helps my plastic baits slide through easier. I use Fish Formula II or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of 100% pure anise oil added; this is to mast any odor my plastic may have pick up.
I've had very good success with Megastrike.

I think Big O and Catt have put this attractant issue into it's proper perspective as well as it can be said. I also do not think the word attractant is a proper description for what they do best.
When i first started bass fishing i purchased around 6 or more different scents to test out. My first one was the orginal baitmate bass and i been using it ever since. I been using Yum & Riverside crawfish scents too.
I did notice if i use baitmate bass scent and i change up sometimes to a garlic scent.
On my senko type baits i don't use a scent on my first cast. If i get a strike and a miss one shot of scent is a definite hook up on the next cast.
Becareful using scents from shore or with others closeby too because everyone around you will catch fish i proved that many times.
One shot of scent covers the human and tackle box oders. BB
Wow baitmate. Didnt think that stuff was still around. I like Jacks Juice, megastrike, and jjs or spike it dyes. Depends on the situation
Speaking of Baitmate, I have had some success with it and bass, but where it really shines for me is in Trout fishing.
Years ago when Baitmate first came out, I was at a fishing expo and Baitmate was handing out free samples. They had a kiddie Trout pond there and none of the kids where having any luck. I sprayed some on my kids setup and right away he got a trout. Since that day I have used it many times while out trout fishing and to this day it still produces trout when nothing else is working.
for me the best scent made is Pro-cure super gel . this is a must have scent when throwing swimbaits and using soft plastics , period !!!!

The best I have seen in my life is no longer made.Manns fs454 not an attractant, but I would show fishing partners how I could lead a bass around the boat without setting the hook. This was around 1980 or so.
