right now fish are super finicky up here and from what I've heard most northern states. Probably a good time to focus on smallmouth in deeper areas.
none of the above .

X2....C-Rig has been my ticket for the bigger ones lately.
I usually reach for a football jig, but I need to work on deep water in general, I'm terrible at it
None of the above. Deep for me is a jigging spoon.
Voted tube.
It depends on your definition of deep and the type of lake you fish. I fish some lowland reservoirs where 20 feet would be deep fishing. I fish some highland reservoirs where 50 - 60 feet is deep fishing.
For lowland reservoirs, I favor a football or brush jig depending on the bottom.
For highland reservoirs, I like a jigging spoon with a dropshot not far behind.
These aren't the only lures I fish deep but I seem to have the most success using them.

Drop shot or a jig.
What about a shaky head?

Rage Tail Thumper and MegaStrike MegaTube Craw
For 10 - 20 feet I would say crank. Deeper than that, carolina rig or football jig. If the crank fails to produce in the 10 - 20 range, out comes the latter two.
Don't overlook slow rolling a spinnerbait in deep either, it just has tremendous fish attraction power.
I fish mostly for bronze backs and spend most of my time throwing a drop shot
Drop shot.
Going deep means jigs in any dark color.
Unable to respond to poll as my favorite is whatever would be best for a given situation. If I had to choose though it would be a blade bait. Or maybe a drop shot. or maybe a c-rig or maybe a big heavy jig and swimbait combo. I can't decide. I mean I've caught bass in over 50' on a Keitech Salty Core in the middle of winter. A very slow way to fish for sure but it worked.
a drop shot is not a bait...
My deepest running bait is a "Jig-&-Craw", but not a football jig (not in Florida)

I need your help, I really want to know who manufactures dropshot and shakeyhead ? are the available in several sizes ? anybody got pics of dropshot or shakeyhead ?
Jig a lot of the time or a hudd
C-rig/mojo for deep, most flat structure. Texas and jigs for deep sloping structures

Ha-ha. Raul is one of our resident "wanna be comedians". I'm assuming he has another source of income.
I fish from shore only so don't get to really fish deep water but if I did I'd probably give some of the deep diving crankbaits and dropshotting first crack at it!
I posted this prior to a trip North to Maine. cobbessecanti? Spelling may be off lol well in deep water with smallies virtually non existent in that lake I was getting LMB in 30-40ft on shakey head with a finesse worm, couple on a drop shot with a shad style bait as well. Less than 20 ft C-Rig was the ticket with a lizard... I seriously pulled a fish off a bed in JULY!!!! Insane, it must of just got ready to spawn or just spawned its entire bottom and tail were red as hell. A game warden I spoke with said a year or so ago all the smallies came up to spawn during a warm week in April and then winter continued. They were in shallow water with no weeds for oxygen and didn't go back to deep water so a massive fish kill off happened. Any how great to see the feedback! Tight lines!
For our lakes it would be a football jig
I voted football jig, but I also like to use a heavy weighted t - rig.
I like a shakyhead/Ned or a drop shot. The thing I really like about drop shot (as n00b as I am at it) is that it brings the bite "right there" as in you might have a ton of line out, but you aren't line watching you're feeling it. I really like that, as sometimes the bite on a shaky or Ned feels like it's lightyears away and I'm struggling to make a good hookset because of how much line is out and slack for the shake.
Practice makes perfect though I guess.
I hear ya. Although when going for smallies most of the time they whack the living hell out of it. But yeah LMBs sometimes you're second guessing what you're feeling. On 7/30/2015 at 8:52 PM, Master Bait said:I like a shakyhead/Ned or a drop shot.
