Who Needs Expensive Rods 2024

fishing user avatar1201vilbig reply :

20 year old Bailey Boutries leads the FLW event on Grand Lake as of today. He is sponsored by and is using Profishiency rods. A quick check of their web site lists casting rod prices from $29.99 to $79.99....

you don't need to spend over 100 bucks for a nice rod ... that's a given ... still light, sensitive and strong ... if choose to ... that's ok with me ....

2 lengths of spinning rods, 3 of casting and only one power/action for each of those 5 rod selections.

Very slim pickings and there's plenty of rods by others in that price range that cover a wide range of length/power/action selections.

AND he's fishing on an older Ranger with a fortrex. That'll be changing quick if this kid places in the top 5 on Sunday haha. I'm rooting for him.

Man I hope he smokes 'em

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Nobody needs expensive rods. Amateurs are way more hung up on expensive gear than pros who do it for a living. A good portion of the top level pros use mid level gear.

That said, I like nice gear as much as anyone, nothing wrong with that but it doesn't make you a better fisherman.

fishing user avatarmrpao reply :

Most pros dont use expensive gear because to them it's just a tool. Its expendable to them. They are sponsored, so they get it for cheap or free.

I would never throw my rods down like they do. I paid too much money for my stuff.

fishing user avatarJohnbt reply :

I need expensive rods. They're lighter stronger and just generally feel good. I fished with cheap stuff my whole life - well, except for an 11' surf rod I had built by Red Drum tackle in Buxton NC 30 years ago.  A month ago I finally threw away the 2 freshwater rods I used as a child. I had kept them to remind me how bad they were.

One was a metal rod and one was some newfangled fiberglass rod that wasn't too good even 50 or 60 years ago. The round metal reels still worked. Sort of.

I love my 3 Shimano/Loomis  Conquest rods. I think I should buy another one. I need them.  :)

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

All that proves is if you're good enough you can catch em if you find em.

They are everything but stronger. Expensive rods made with high end graphite are much more brittle than the Ugly stick, I'll be you my house I can lift more with an ugly stick than you can with a conquest rod before it breaks. I'm not being smart, most of my rods are in the $120 to $400 range with my most used rods in the $150 to $200 range. The very reason high end rods are more sensitive also makes them more brittle, the lighter crisper actions are much more enjoyable to fish with but you aren't boat flipping a 10# channel cat with a medium power conquest without it snapping like a dead and rotted pine branch. You can take an ugly stick of medium power and boat flip a 17# carp with though and not suffer any ill effects, I saw that happen, I would even try  to do that with a good composite rod. Yes, the better rods are lighter, crisper, and more enjoyable to fish but they aren't stronger.

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

Nobody has ever said that you need expensive gear to catch fish. Aaron Martens is a fine example of that. He went from using some high dollar Megabass rods ($700 X7) to using Enigma rods that are $100. He still catches plenty of fish. Some of us just get enjoyment out of nice gear. Which is a relative term as it is. Some of us are enthusiasts and are okay with spending $400+ on a rod, or a reel. I know guys that have over $2,000 in a single combo. Some people think that’s just absurd and their idea of high end is a $300 combo. That’s perfectly okay too.  “Get in where you fit in”

I think it’s those cheap rods causing all his problems. Seems he needs some better rods!

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

No one needs to own guns.  No one needs to drive around in pickup trucks if they are not hauling something.  No one needs to own more than one vehicle.  No one needs live in a house bigger than 750 square feet.  No one needs to have that much land just to live on.  No one needs to drive when we have public transport and high speed rails.  No one needs to own vehicles with internal combustion engines when we have electric cars.  I can go on and on.

This "no one needs" is often a phrase used by those looking to infringe upon our rights, prosperity and liberty.  Need is a funny word.

(No, I'm not joking...my house is 850 finished sq-ft)

Always find these threads to be very comical......Do you really worry about what others think about your gear , if you are on the water and having fun then that is all that matters. Happen to be one of those who knows expensive gear is not required to catch fish however that is what I prefer and enjoy using.  Have a fishing buddy who loves his 10.00/20.00 clearance priced rods all the while catching his fair share of fish. Now our days on the water are full of laughter as balls get busted big time and especially when he snaps one of those rods and loses a 5lb. brown fish. What is important and always has been important is the enjoyment fishing brings not to mention the stress it relieves.....@J Francho aka The "Crass Angler" can certainly attest to the fun and laughter that is had on the boat along with the characters involved...

Must have been after he accepted a Kastking sponsorship.

I like to buy rods in the $100 or less category. I am rough on my rods. Bank fishing, car trips, low ceilings and doorways have cost me a rod or two or three.

As hard as I am on my rods, I would be harder on myself if I damaged a $150+ rod.

Who needs expensive rods?

Collectors in particular.  I "collect" technique specific rods and reels. I am in the process of converting

to all custom builds. This is for my own pleasure and entertainment. I like fishing with other guys whether

they share my passion or not. I don't care what anyone fishes with and would not recommend my gear to

most of them.  If someone asks, I will suggest different brands at appropriate pricing points, but ONLY if

they ask.

"but you aren't boat flipping a 10# channel cat"

I've never boat flipped a fish in my life. If fish were meant to fly they'd have wings. I don't lift cinder blocks with my rods and don't use rods that will lift cinder blocks. Although, some of my surf rods might lift one. I guess I'll never know.

For their weight the Conquests are strong and supple with great feel. If you think they're brittle that's okay. I don't think so and don't care. If I break one I'll buy another the next day.

You think fishing is expensive? I have a 28 ga. O/U and don't reload. I'm just a country kid who grew up in a rowhouse in Baltimore. I love spending the money I worked hard for.

Just for the record Conquest are made for bass fishing if I was flipping channel cats at 10 lbs. and carp at 17 well then my Loomis Pro Blues would be on the deck....but then again I thought we were talking about bass fishing which is what a Conquest excels at just like you stated........

fishing user avatarChris186 reply :

I used to have $300+  rods. I sold them all and bought rods in the $100-150 range which I like just as much and catch just as many fish on.  I’m actually looking at a KastKing rod for a topwater/Jerkbait rod right now.   As far as reels go, I only have one that was more than $130. Most of my reels are in the $79-99 range and I couldn’t be happier.

He finished 11th today with just one fish. Pretty crazy. Was one more bite away from championship Sunday. He's definitely on my radar now. Impressive finish.

I will be also. Hopefully this is a result of the BPT creating opportunities for others.

Just to keep the thread going, derail further, and beat the horse some more...

Guys say "I don't care what people think about my stuff", okay I understand that to a point.

But shouldn't you be proud of the gear you work hard to purchase, use, enjoy and own? Wether it be a 79.99 rod or a 499.99 rod. You bought it, it had certain qualities that you thought were above the rest.

When I get a new rod, reel, baits, etc.. I show my fishing buddies. Joke around that it's gonna catch 3 fish to their 1, and so forth. All I'm saying is be proud of the gear you own, no matter how much it cost.

On side note, kid held his own with a 11th place finish against a huge field of competitors. Pretty cool to see. Why didn't Thrift get an invite to MLF? He's been dominating FLW for some time

You missed the point I was making. I'm saying I agree with everything but the fact they are stronger, they are not. It isn't opinion it is fact. Yes, plenty strong enough for what we do but high end rods are not stronger than most cheap rods because they use lower grade material. High modulus graphite is stiffer and is more brittle, this isn't opinion, it is fact. So saying a more expensive rod is stronger just isn't true but as I mentioned, the rods are more sensitive, lighter, more responsive, and just more enjoyable to use. Nobody is telling you how to spend your money and I completely agree with using what makes you happy but the point is that if you are making a list of why you like a higher end rod then simply leave the "stronger" element off the list because it is factually incorrect. BTW, I think the Conquest rods are awesome!!

I bet there are 1000 posts criticizing high end gear for every post doing the same for cheap gear.

I'm a middle of the road gear guy so I guess I should catch flack from both sides.
