What To Buy.need Advice.400$ Budget. 2024

fishing user avatarKabar reply :

Hi!

Recently bought:

St. Croix Medium Fast + Chronarch

Fenwick Medium Heavy /Moderate Fast + Curado

I have 2 cheap (medium Daiwa Tierra + Heavy medium Shimano Convergence) spinning rods with Shimano Sahara and Shimano Spirex.

have some money still in my pocket , and can't decide what to buy:

Options:

1) High- end (400$ budget) spinning Heavy Medium Rod to replace one of my cheap rods.

2) St.Croix Medium-Heavy Fast action Casting rod + some good casting reel.

I don't own a boat , but during summer do campings ( a lot) and renting a paddle boat + some 1 day trips for shore fishing.

For now I fish pike/ bass/ will try walleye this year.

What would you buy?

Any other option in mind?

Ya wanna know what the best combo in the world is? The G-Loomis GL2 casting rod matched with an Ardent Edge Inshore Pro, by far the best thing since sliced bread. I had mine but I sold it.. :( I still have the reel though. Maybe you should look at that combo.

fishing user avatarKabar reply :

I did read some posts about GL2....a lot people didnt like it enough to keep it for longer period of time....even said that GL2 line is not worth the money, suggested St Croix Avid series instead.

Ardent ..well i'm pretty much new to fishing and will stick with more popular brands like shimano , Abu G.....but in the future ...who knows.

Thank you for replay.

IMO I would go with a good casting setup. Go with the rod of your choice, then pair it up with a nice reel and some good line. I'll recommend a SHIMANO Chronarch 200e7 with some Seaguar Invizx

fishing user avatarPackard reply :

I think a good spinning setup would be beneficial for how you are going to be fishing. Maybe a stradic and cumara combo.

Didn't consider spinning reel upgrade....but just read about CI4 ...and like it v. much....but Sahara is pretty good and it's for free ...cause I'm already own it :)

I have Chronarch 200E6.. and Curado 200G7 and like them , If I go with another casting setup ...well would like to try maybe Abu Revo SX :)..and rod would be MH F Avid....unless you have better idea...read that G Lommis GL2, GL3 and IMX are not that much above Avid series.....but GLX is different story. That why I'm confused..maybe just buy the GLX Spinning and pair it with Sahara for now...or GLX casting and pair it with Curado/Chronarch from Fenwick (then Fenwick goes to the closet until I buy reel for it) :)

fishing user avatarPackard reply :

I have a sahara that I like as well. If you are in the market for a casting reel, take a look at the Lew's Tournament Pro. I have one and it is great! It's super light and smooth. I got mine for $154 new on ebay.

fishing user avatarHi Salenity reply :

If you really want to catch more fish get off the bank! Buy a Kayak... Any rod will catch fish if you can get to them.

fishing user avatarKabar reply :

I'm from Mississauga ON, there is no Lew's dealer that I know...:(..I have BPS 30 min form where I live.:)

Prefer to rent paddle boat....it's a great exercise :)...but thank you.

fishing user avatarHi Salenity reply :

Then a Rage rod and a Lew's Tournament pro reel is one of my favorite combos.

I haven't seen a bad one in a while. Just look and see if the guides are lined up.

And move somewhere that has Lew's reels ! ASP

fishing user avatarKabar reply :

still nobody said that I should go with GLX.....suprised , because I read that this is huge step up in rods world.

You're doing it wrong, then. ;) Use more trunk and less arm and you'll find that you can paddle faster and longer with less fatigue.

GLX is an awesome rod, but more for someone who has a variety of rods and wants to upgrade. You are establishing a base, and that requires more moderately price combos!

Thank you , that is very good explanation.

If you're building an arsenal, add a deep cranking setup:

You want to try a Revo, pick up a Revo Winch

Pair it with a MH/Mod action rod: Lamiglas XCF 705, St Croix Avid Cranking

I have a Fenwick MH Mod/Fast as a cranking rod.Looking now for MH Fast rod as for ''do it all'' rod.

In that case, I'd stick with with the Avid and if you still want to try a Revo, go one more step to the STX. The added features are well worth the few extra $.

Thank you all.

Got St.Croix 7' MH/Fast...and Revo STX. :)

I would save a little more money and buy a kayak, or start saving for a boat.

Great choices. I have the same rod in the Avid and Legend Elite line up and it is an awesome all purpose rod. And the STX is IMO a much better reel then the SX. You will love the dual breaking system. I have a Premier 2010 model and it casts a mile...
