OK .... I think I am pretty much done with flourocarbon lines!!!! 2024

fishing user avatarBassnajr reply :

Hey all....

I started a thread a while back about flouro and the difficulty of use etc.

I did get many good suggestions from folks on the board here about what brand to use and how to treat it, how to spool it up, using KVD L+L on it, and many more opinions and suggestions. Well............

I spent quite a bit of money on various brands, and since most are made in the same factories in Japan, I am not sure there is much difference. I am STILL having problems with the line curling up on the spool of my baitcasters and "professional over runs". With the improvements in braided line and their ease of use, I just don't see what all the hoopla is about. To me, I just can't see having to worry all the time about this line. I would rather be fishing then worrying about will the line backlash, will I break it off, and on and on....

I can understand flouros benefit when bed fishing and for some finesse presentations but that's about it. I even asked Timmy Horton if lite braid could be used for cranking and he didn't say no....just that he prefers flouro.

Can someone here convince me why I should continue the "flouro" quest?? Is it REALLY worth it???? :-/

Thanks,

ajr

fishing user avatarBlaine E reply :

Id also like to know what everybodys gettin excited about? Ive always prefered mono over everything, i just never could get into anything else.

fishing user avatarshadyhaven reply :

i hear you loud and clear...i too went through the different brands and still hate it. i am trying the co-poloymer this year because of several suggestions. however the rest will be braid with a flouro leader(when needed)and good ol'mono! i am in love with braid! i dont think there is anything you cannot do with braid and a leader besides topwater. just my 2cents.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

I agree. I haven't purchased flouro since the first two spools I tried. I still can't understand why other people use it.

fishing user avatarFishingPirate reply :

I like it but I guess thats just how I roll. I cant hardly cast line on a BC if its limper than 12lb Trilene XL.

fishing user avatarBassnajr reply :

Well Pirate that's all well and good, but.....

You need to tell us "non believers" how you tame the beast and use it....worry free.

fishing user avatarTriton21 reply :

I haven't had any problem with Fluorocarbon since I learned how to tie a knot that would not break.  I find it as easy as mono.  The only thing I still use mono for is cranks.  Learn how to educate your thumb and adjust your brake to eliminate overruns.

fishing user avatarBigGame0892 reply :

Hey guys, just thought I would pipe in on this one.  Not a real frequent poster, but I have been using Fluoro for over a year now and am having very few problems.  We have all heard the benefits to Fluoro, the main ones being that it is invisible to the fish, and less stretch than monofilament.

Personally, there are 2 benefits that are the most important to me.

1.  The line doesn't absorb water, therefore it sinks faster, is more sensitive than mono and doesn't increase in stretch after being in the water for awhile.

2.  The most important to me.  I use Fluoro mainly for my bottom baits - jigs, worms, shakey-head, etc.  I prefer it over braid, because although braid is probably more sensitive.  That also translates to it being more sensitive on this fish end as well.  Meaning, a fish can feel your resistance quicker with braid, than with Fluoro and in my experience tend to drop the bait a little quicker.  That little bit of stretch in Fluoro translates into me having a little more time to set the hook.

Anyway, just my personal opinion guys.  I think braid is great too, and at times I think it is preferable to use it over Fluoro, but I often employ a Fluorocarbon leader then too.

Just for reference the brands I tend to use:  XPS Fluoro on my baitcasters (most abrasion resistant I've found) and P-line Fluoro on my spinning reels.

fishing user avatarmase088 reply :

I use flouro for anything I can now, I love the stuff. Trilene 100% is my favorite. I also use p-line flouroclear a lot as well, depending on what I have the money for or lying around.

fishing user avatarnoway reply :

Fluoro = fail.

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

I tried Seagar Invizx, hated the stuff, and never used it again.  Yo-Zuri Hybrid is the perfect compromise between pure fluoro and mono.  I use it for everything.

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

Berkley 100% flouro = fishing bliss.  12lb on the Revo, best line I've ever used, hands down. ZEROOOOOOO memory.

8lb on the Sol spinning reel has yet to prove itself, a little loopy still, but a few fish should fix it.

Plenty of KVD, tie it to the fence in the back yard and walk it out, give a few tugs to work out any memory... good to go.

fishing user avatarBigGame0892 reply :

I agree, Yozuri Hybrid is awesome stuff.  I use it a lot in addition to my fluorocarbons.

fishing user avatarTin reply :

All my rods with the exception of my frog and heavy duty grass rods have either Trilene 100% or Seaguar Invizx. Stuff is great, abrasion resistant, and I'm convinced I get more bites that with mono because of it's light refraction properties.

When I put it on I soak the spool in water for a while, then just put it on coming off the bottom of the spool, and before it goes onto the spool I have a cloth with KVD L + L on it that I run it through. Then I tie a hook on, dig the hook into something, walk 75% of the line off, and put it back on real tight. Works great for me.

fluro is OK but i still personally use mono.. IZORLINE XXX is the only line for me!  ;D

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

The ONLY reel i have spooled with fluorocarbon is the Revo on my 7' 6" flippin stick. Since it is a short cast technique only set-up the lines stiffness is not an issue. And i need the sensitivity and low stretch for flippin. Other than that the hassle is not worth it to me!

fishing user avatarBassnajr reply :

I'll try the fence thing...that's about the only thing I haven't tried!! :)

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Bought a spool of Berkley 100% last year in 6lb test for my finesse rig.  I don't even care enough to work at trying to make myself like this stuff.  You guys can have it, I'll stick to my XT.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

I quickly got off the flouro bandwagon myself. I'm trying Yozuri Hybrid and we'll see. The 15 lb I have is pretty kinky.

fishing user avatarCSB reply :

I didnt have any luck with the Yozuri Hybrid but I am liking P-Line fluoro...Still prefer braid over everything else but for my finesse rigs I spool up the fluoro.

fishing user avatarMike 12345 reply :

The Yozuri hybrid works fantastic for me, but I only use 10 and 12 lb line on most of my baitcasters.

I tried the 20lb Yozuri on my flipping stick, and it felt like the reel was spooled with CATV cable, and was just about as workable. Now I think I'll stick with braid on this rod.

I agree though, that other than the 10 and 12 lb hybrid I referenced above, I still use mono for most other applications, and it feels the best to me, personally.

fishing user avatar-HAWK- reply :

For all you Fluro Haters, Give Copolymer lines a try. I HATE Fluro with a passion. I recently switch to Coploymer lines and love them.

I gave up on flouro a couple of years ago. It was a case of why bother.

You have to be careful with kinking when backlashed. You have to very careful with knots. You have to careful when spooling. You have to use a line conditioner.

I use Trilene XL for everything. The only thing I have to do is spool it on the reels, and go fish.

fishing user avatar12Outlaw reply :

I am glad I am not the only one.  For the past 3 years I have tried Seagur Invisx, Trilene 100% floro, Berkley Vanish, BPS brand, and Vicious.  I went back the Trilene Big Game green in 10, 12 15lb on my baitcasters.  I use P-line Cx premium copoly on spinning, and Power Pro braid on swim jigs and frogs.  I will never go back to floro.  They all have one characteristic tha no one can argue with -- if you have even the slightest bit of fray in floro it is going to snap.  I fish around 90 days a year and compete in several tournaments.  I can't stand floro and won't use it just because the pros use it.

fishing user avatarNJAngler609 reply :

Gamma Flouro ...tried it for the first time this week...absolutely loved it...i did get one bad birdsnest but it was completely my fault(tried to launch a weightless senko lol)..i used a ton of KVD line conditioner and it has had no memory what so ever...the only downside is its about 28 dollas for 120 yards

fishing user avatarwagn reply :

I'm glad that I found this thread. i thought i was the only one who has not been fishing floro and was convinced that I was missing out. I'm use Triline or Suffix for most of my fishing. Although I am considering trying some of the copoly's like P-line or Yozuri Hybrid.

I just want a line that I don't have to worry about so i can spend my time fishing and not retying

fishing user avatarGoggle Eyes reply :

Man, I'm surprised to hear the outcry against flouro in here. I use Seaguar Carbon Pro on two of my baitcasters and I havent had any issues. I realize its stretchy, but I grew up on mono so I'm used to a little stretch on the hookset.

I bought a used reel with P Line CXX on it and I'm curious to see how that handles.

Nope, you ain 't alone, the only fluoro I use is for leaders, not as main line.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I use Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon and have ZERO issues with it on both spinning and casting gear. And I don't do anything special with it either, spool it on the reels and go fish. Other than frogging and flipping heavy weeds (braid) and top water (mono) I use it for everything. I have just the opposite experience and opinion of , what seems to be, the line every one wets there pants over around here.........Yo-Zuri Hybrid, it's the worst line I have ever used.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

I also hate fluoro as a mainline, I don't seem to have the thumb control to handle it and when I backlash it doesn't birdnest but rather just loosens up around the spoon alllllll the way down...

I use it only for leaders on my braided line now...

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I absolutely love Floro! I've use the BPS or P line for my casting rods because of price and they are tough lines that haven't let me down. I''ve done well with the Gamma brand on a spinning rod, very pricey though. Last year because of the reccomendations of many on the board I tried the new Trilene Floro, so far I've been very pleased and because it's more readily available and a little more economical than the Gamma it looks like I'll be making the switch. I know that I've become a better soft plastics/ Jig fisherman since I've been using Floro, especially in deep clear water.

For everyone trying Yo-zuri Hybrid and Yo-zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft there is no need for anything over 12 lb test. It has a much higher breaking point for it's rating compared to mono or fluoro. I believe the 12 lb breaks at 17.9 lbs of pressure. It's somewhere close to that. KVD line conditioner can only help if you want limper line.

You both beat me  :).  I honestly can't comprehend how anyone could try Trilene 100% and not like it.  It has very little memory, has perfect clarity (no yellowish tint), is VERY abrasion resistant, and doesn't turn white after a few weeks like several fluoro's I've tried.  I'm done trying new fluoros.....I have bulk spools of the 100%.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

The only thing I use fluoro for as a main line is for vertical jigging. I do use it as a leader a lot though. I use mono for just about everything except fishing really heavy cover or for jerkbaits. Braid with a fluoro leader gets the call then. If I need extra depth on smaller cranks, I will reach for braid as well. Good ol' mono is hard to beat if you are using the right one. Stren Original and P - Line CX Premium are my favorites. I miss Stren Magnaflex (EZ CAST) though. It was limp but not wimpy.

Due to the invisibility and the fact that it sinks.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

It also resists abrasion better.  When using a leader, use leader material, not reel fill line.  Its much tougher than reel fill.

fishing user avatarjake reply :

I have also gone through the different brands of flouro.

Trilene 100%, P-line, vanish and others. I have settled on one. Seaguar Invisx. I used this all of last year and loved it. I re-tie much less, because of abrasion. It seems so smooth and stays that way. After trying P-line and then vanish I didnt think anything would impress me enough to keep fishing flouro. Seagaur will be the only line on my baitcasters. I currently have the Carbon Pro spooled up and so far so good.

fishing user avatarBassnajr reply :

I am now trying Seagur...we'll see........

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

Inviz-X is simply the limpest fluoro on the market....period. It stretches a ton, but so does Trilene XL and people love it. Inviz-X is for anglers that want managability versus anything else....beginners fluoro if you will. However, the softness of Inviz-X directly affects its abrasion resistance. Check out Tackle Tour's fluorocarbon shootout....Inviz-X tested significantly lower in abrasion resistance than Trilene XL, and I feel Trilene XL is far from representing an abrasion resistant line.

Fluoro's I will rate as far as 'limpness'

Seaguar Carbon Pro...decently limp and castable....not very abrasion resistant....absorbs water like mono and turns white in a few weeks)

Trilene 100%...limp...yet great abrasion resistance. Great clarity and slick feel. Does not absorb water or turn white with use.  Knots consistently broke a couple of pounds higher than it's rating.

Seaguar Inviz-X....Very limp...good knot strength, but poor abrasion resistance.

Sunline FC Sniper...this very limp line is probably the most abrasion resistant of any lines that are 'noodle-limp'.   This means it isn't very abrasion resistant, but tolerable.   Fishability and castability were VERY close to Trilene XL. Like Inviz-X, it stretches like a rubber band, but on the bright side it will actually break at what it is rated.

you know i never gave that athought about reel spool line compared to leader   line  do most co make leader line  so what do you use or recomend for a leader  with 30 lb power pro on a 7'  med mojo  bait cast rod----- thank you

fishing user avatarkms399 reply :

just use braid. dont set the hook so hard and use a leader in clear water. instead of buying stretchy line buy softer rods and save your self a lot of hassle.

fishing user avatarBernie Mac reply :

ok, we have all this talk about using flouro leaders w/ braid...now I can't remember if it's this thread or another one but I read that somebody (I think) was jigging and decided to use two setups.  One all braid and the other with a flouro leader.  He stated that he caught just as many on braid w/o leader than with leader.  So that raises a question.  Is a(any) fish really paying attention to your line or just eyening  :) the   (if presented right)?  Just a thought.

fishing user avatarBassnajr reply :

Bernie,

I set up two rigs for senkos and plastics...one all braid, one with a flouro leader. Used them for about a week. I saw no significant difference in fish catch totals. Not scientific but???

I can see flouro/ leader for bed fishing or some finesse applications.

fishing user avatarBernie Mac reply :

OH, that's right, I read it here...but do you think it's more of how you work the bait than what it's tied too   I remember using a wacky rig in Lake Annacoco in LA and my partner and I got close to 30 LM that day, and I was using all braid.  I think.

fishing user avatarBassnajr reply :

I worked them the same way Bernie. So, you would think that the fish might be "spooked" by the big length of braid attached to the Senko...they weren't. Again not an official test, but it told me something!!! :)

fishing user avatarBernie Mac reply :

Yeah, it tells me something too AJR...you can use braid for almost anything.  Fish a spinner, crank a crankbait, pitch a senko, toss a frog, skip a craw...tow your car to the shop...anything  :).

fishing user avatarSWMIBASSER reply :

I think the problems with memory and loops etc are operator error. Especially the Y/Z hybrid. Has to be the strongest per diameter, I've used. On a small spooled Supreme spinning reel with ZERO, ZERO,ZERO problems.

The above is IMO Below is not

The breaking problems are due to poor knot selection and execution. The line will break if there is a poor knot tied.

In the case of flouro think of it breaking like snapping a toothpick. It snaps at kinks in the line. Mono will stretch and fatigue, then break.

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

After this past weekend, I stand behind my statement. Trilene 100% flouro....

12lb on the Revo

8lb on the Sol

Simply amazing.
