Next Reel After Tatula 2024

fishing user avatarKptBuzzBait reply :

So about a year ago I decided to start fishing again and based on some input from this site I decided to buy a bps qualifier. Needless to say I have been very pleased with it considering the amount I paid.

Shortly afterwards I decided to buy another reel. This time a Tatula, once again based on recommendations from this site. So far I have really enjoyed this reel.

If I was to buy another reel would a Curado I or Lews tournament pro be a substantial upgrade over the Tatula? And if it is an upgrade is it enough of an upgrade to justify the price difference seeing how you can get a Tatula for $100?

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

If you want an upgrade over the Tatula, get a Zillion on closeout or wait until the new Zillions come out.  The Curado I is a great reel but I don't know that it is an upgrade over the Tatula.  IMO

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Just buy another tatula! Lol

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

I think the Curado is a better reel, but it sure the heck isn't a $50-$70 upgrade. The Tatula and Type R for $100 and $130 are about the best value you're going to find on the market, at any price point.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

I don't know if either would be an upgrade over the Tatula..............don't have one.  Nor do I own a Curado I.  I do have a Tournament Pro and just ordered a Tatula Type R earlier today.  Finally I will get to see for myself what the big deal is with the Tatula reels.  BTW, the R cost less than the list price of the regular Tatula....but not less than the $100 people say it can be bought for.  Wish I had more experience with my Tournament Pro.  My middle grandson (was the youngest at that time) grabbed my TP and now thinks it is his.  :cry3:

I can agree that the Zillions are great reels.  My 50th Anniversary is one of my favorites.  I also picked up a couple of the T3 1016 variants, and like them as well.  Very effective braking system.  My vote would be for either the Zillion or T3 1016 both currently on sale at TW.

Just noticed that this is your first post.  Welcome to the forum.  :teeth:

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

My opinion is the curado I is a better reel, it's a lot more ergonomic. Tatulas are the bargin for sure though.. Both reels are solid performers.. If you like you're tat, upgrade to a zillion. I don't think a curado is a upgrade, per se, but rather a change in engineering styles. Both company's make excellent products. I vote for shimano!

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Easy... Curado I

Lews tp can be found for $150 online. Great little reel. Upgrade, not exactly but it's smaller and lighter. I played with a curado I the other day in field and stream. It had one heck of a tight spot while reeling it. I know that's not the norm but I was a little turned off by that.

My Curados were packed with grease. They loosen up a LOT with a proper cleaning. The spool bearings were especially packed.

What's the difference between the Tatula and TatulaType R?

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

It's just a few things. Zion drag star, black paint with red accents,2 corrosion resistant bearings, .03 ounces lighter which is because of the spool. Comes in an 8:1:1 ratio

I have both and can't tell a single bit of difference between them. Only bought the R for the ratio.

Pretty much what TT said in their review.  They didn't think the Type R was worth the extra $50.  I ordered one today in the 8.1:1 ratio.  I also prefer its color scheme to the regular Tat.  Eventually I'll also have a regular Tat....maybe before next season  Don't expect to notice any difference in casting abilities.  Don't see the .03 oz. lighter spool making a discernible to me, but then...unlike others...I doubt I could tell the difference between mono or braid used as backing, but it seems some people can.

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

Forgot to add, the R has cutouts in the frame. I think that's where the weight difference is from.

fishing user avatarbootytrain reply :

I have the Curado I and Tatula R. Id say the Curado is a little better overall. You should treat yourself to a 50 sized Shimano, like a Scorpion, Core50, or Chronarch 50.

This!

Don't forget the Shimano Aldebaran MG7. I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket right now and I am thinking about getting one.

Pro Qualifier, Tatula, keep moving up the ladder man

So was I.  Seems logical enough, especially considering what they can be had for.  Great reel, I like mine.

Yep, treat yourself to a 50 size Shimano.

fishing user avatarGoDeep reply :

I have Tatulas and Curado Is and I honestly couldn't choose between the 2 if I had to. I say get another Tatula, or a Chronarch E.

The new zillions is already out

I saw the spool weight in the new zillions, I don't think there will be much difference in casting if any between it and the Tatula. I'd you are gonna spend new zillion money get an Exsence DC or Metanium from Japan.

What model Tatula is least expensive and where do you suggest I look at prices?

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

If you want a 50 size reel, I would opt for one of 13 Fishings Concepts.

I did it in the other direction... I had a Tournament Pro and then bought a Tatula.  I think you'd be impressed with a Tournament Pro and would enjoy the smaller size, lighter weight, and more involved braking system to play with.  You can probably get one for less than the MSRP of a Tatula.

I really enjoy using both of these reels.  I need to try a Shimano next, and I'm itching for a 50 size.

Tight lines,

Bob

Just the regular tatula is the cheapest. Call Ron and see what kind of prices he has on it. 360-757-8171

To the op I'm probably gonna buy a new zillion next to see how it stacks up to the tatula and the old zillion. My gut tells me there's going to be negligible differences between the new zillion and tatula but I'm gonna buy it anyway, looks like the marketing guys win this time.

You should check the Diawa videos a out the new zillions. It looks very impressive.

I have, reminds me of the Tatula videos. With the right video editing anything can look impressive lol. If the spool was in the 12 to 14 gram range we may see a seperation in performance but Im gonna predict similar casting to the tat r.

No they aren't.  They won't be out for another couple of weeks.
