What line do you use on your BFS? 2025

fishing user avatarFrankN209 reply :

What line do you use on your BFS reels? I'm using Gliss 24lb which has a .007 diameter. I want to get the most line as possible on my new CALCUTTA CONQUEST BFS without compromising strength. It seems to have the same spool as the Shimano ALDEBARAN BFS.

Right now I can empty my spool quite easily.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

Good question Frank. I know braid will have a very thin diameter but the tradeoff seams to be the non stretch factor of braid possibly harming the delicateness of the spool. I have yet to down to true BFS reels in the purest sense of the term, but I do have a few SV 105s and I like to run 6 or 8 # Yozuri Hybrid. These are my finesse hard bait setups so I am tossing hardbaits around rock and rip rap and topwaters alongside fairly thick weed edges. I need a bit more muscle to move fish away and put a little pressure on them to keep them from burying themselves in the slop so I really don't want to go "too" light on the line.

What are you trying to do with the Conquest? Are you fishing in areas where the cover is a bit more dense or is it mostly open water/sparse cover? You could try something like mono in the 6# range. Maybe opt for one with good handling and smaller diameter. You could use flouro as well if you don't intended to use presentations like topwater for example.

With as delicate as those BFS spools are even with the drag set properly, I personally, would opt for mono or flouro. I am sure there are a good number of folks running braid or braid with a leader for the thinner diameter and maybe a touch more distance.

Probably the 2nd part, open with some cover. I'll use my other setups for the heavier cover. I'll give mono a shot, I have some 8lb YoZuri already.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

If I am seeing the line capacity right, that reel holds 50 yards of 6# line. Knowing how brilliant the Conquest line is at casting I would probably try not to go over 6 # line. The problem with going to say 8# is that you will likely be close to if not spooling the reel with slightly heavier and aerodynamic baits.

I have caught a fair amount of decent size fish of various species on a 4# line on spinning gear. You just have to have more patience, play the fish a bit longer, and need a bit more luck to land the better quality fish.

Good luck with whatever route you go. With a small spool capacity, at least you know that should you decide to try a few lines to experiment with, you won't out much line or $.

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

I use #10 nanofil which is the same diameter #24  gliss.  I have a spool of #24 gliss and seagar finesse fluro on the way to try out.

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

I forgot to mention that I use #20 braid a lot but find that I can't get enough of it onto some of my shallower spools to cast 1/4 oz total weight without spooling the reel on a long cast which is why I went to #10 nanofil and gliss.

6lb Yo-Zuri on a somewhat hotrodded (bearings, drag) original Pixy.

fishing user avatarLuckyHandsINC. reply :

I'm new to the BFS game but have been using 6# trilene xl. I thought about using braid but even with the thin diameter it's not truly light line and to me that's most of the fun with BFS. Got my first few BFS fish this past weekend and it was awesome. Couple of 3# smallies had the rod bent in half and the Aldebaran BFS has a drag clicker which also added to the fun. Can definitely see an addiction coming.

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

I use 4lb and 6lb Trilene XT.  I do have 2/6 Fireline on my Revo LTX but it's coming off, too much dig.

Same with this new reel, it has a drag clicker, I was shocked when I heard it.

6 lb XT or YzH.

What about dropping down to #12 gliss is you're spooling the reel on #24?

That's getting pretty thin and I think it will start digging.

I'm not sure dig in are possible on spools this shallow.  I've never dug in with #10 braid on any of my bfs spools.  I suspect that for a dig in to occur there needs to be a malleable layer beneith the line on the surface of the spool such as many layers of line.  With a shallow bfs spool I don't think there is room for a dig in to form.  Just my speculation.  Even snapper reels made for light braid have shallow spools such as the Engetsu.

Right now I have 6lb XL on a PX68 that I use with an UL rod and 8.4lb Seaguar finesse fluoro on a sv105 on a L action rod.  I like the XL, but am going to step down to 4lb next time I refill I think.  The Seaguar Finesse is decent, but seems weak, but it is very thin and manageable.  I am going to try a few more low poundage floros and see which one I like the best.

I highly recomend you try a small braid or #10 green Nanofil.  Much stronger than #4xl

Hah, I think you were the one (on TT) who suggested that I try 4lb XL when I was complaining about BFS line woes.   I might give braid a try again once I can go a couple of trips without a major backlash.

The suggestion of xl was for it to be a trouble shooting aid for your diy spool because it is cheap and handles well.  If you go the nanofil or gliss route I recomend using a knot that is resistant to slipping such as a uni with 10-20 wraps.  Both lines are super slick.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

Honestly I liked the XL so much I am giving mono a shot on a few other reels as well now.  I have never lost a fish due to line breakage that wasn't a pickerel bite-off so until that starts happening I am not going to worry too much about line strength.

If you mean BFS, it stands for Bait Finesse System.  Using casting rods and reels to throw very light weight lures that are traditionally thrown on spinning gear.

Using an extremely expensive bait casting comb to throw lite baits that should really be on a spinning rod.

Actually, I have seen Pixys on ebay for like $120 and the $50 Kuying rods from Aliexpress are very good for the money.  I think the SV reels must have killed the market for Pixies, when I got interested in BFS fishing I read old forum posts for hours and even just a few years ago the prices were like twice what used reels are going for now.  It's a constant struggle to not buy every cheap one that I see.

Still way more than I can afford, but that is a lot cheaper than they were last time I looked at them.

10 lb braid

fishing user avataronenutinthewater reply :

My conquest BFS just arrived today so curious what you guys have found on preferred line after several months?

Mine will be strictly used for casting from the boat in trout lakes. Fish can get up 8-10 # but more common is 2-4#.
