after casting... 8 out of 10 times my line gets hung up.. as shown in the picture. It will stay there during retrieve. Any suggestions on how to rectify this problem?
I've had the exact problem on one of my Shimano spinners but not the others. I've come to the conclusion that it's something related to my simultaneous casting and manual bail closing that doesn't give the line a chance to get to the roller. It happens with lures like buzz baits that have to get moving right away. Why one reel and not another........who knows? As far as solutions you feel it immediately and have to flick it in place with your finger. A real PITA.

I'd consider it a design flaw and exchange it for a different model reel...

I have a Sedona 500fd that I fish the same way and it doesn't get hung up. Also have two Sedona 1000fe and no problem. I always manually close the bail.. I don't see a discernible difference from my other reels...

Thanks. It's not exchangeable
If you're closing your bail manually and making sure the line is tight on the spool before starting your retrieve (both of which help with line twist), it shouldn't be an issue. If you don't have that habit, I can see where that would be annoying as hell.
Thats a manufacter issue. I just looked at mine, and it is very smooth.
Yours has a definate slight lip, or edge to it.

I believe so... we blew up the high resolution picture and discovered it has a little divot as well. I'm going to attempt to file/sand it down or maybe epoxy/jb weld. If that doesn't work.. order a new bail assembly. Thanks
Is that a reel from Bass Pro? If so I would contact them, they are very good with manufacturer defects and warranties.
Hi Bob.. no it's not from bass pro... thank you tho. I really love this real besides this issue... more so than the 1000fe models, So.. hopefully I can get it squared away!
Contact Shimano directly, maybe they had an issue and will step up for you. They have always had a good reputation for customer service.
okay.. thank you

I had a Quantum that had the same problem. I built up the area with epoxy, filed it smooth and never had another problem.

I would start buy using epoxy first. Using any file on it will leave burs, no matter how fine the file is. Which likely will nick line. Hope it works out for you, good luck
You can contact Shimano - it's under warranty. I generally flip the bail manually and set the line in the roller, all at once, so I would never notice this issue.
Never had that happen. I would think small diameter braid may be more prone to hanging up on the bail wire as shown in the photo, the line looks like FC or mono. Try lubricating the line using a conditioner TangleFree, should help to slide over the bail wire onto the roller.
I think it is a design error or flaw on this particular reel.
Contact Shimano and send them the photo.

The OP stated that he always manually closes the bail.

But he's not re-seating the line.
Here's a youtube video showing it all in one action, first few seconds.

OK - Guess I miss that.
Either way, I stand by my original response that the manual bail close is a must.
Additionally, in my own fishing, I don't see how the line could catch at that spot on the bail (or any where for that matter) unless I was using reel handle engagement to flip the bail.
Just saying.

Wow! Yeah, that's perfectly acceptable??? So if that was even bigger edge it would still be ok?
You can cut off the bail wire, if you are accustomed to working the bail manually. I used to do that with my spinning reels years ago, when they were not as refined as they are today.
you can rectify it by trashing it and buying a pflueger on a serious note, you shimano guys are always having problems with your reels...

Like I said above.. I manually flip bail.. not using the handle. I do not believe it's anything I'm doing. I have 6 other spinning reels that I do not have any issues with!!!

Pictures tell the story !!! - I guess I'd take a file to that bad boy in an effort to eliminate or at least drastically reduce that "catch point".
If that didn't work and I was in the right mood - I may very well "Float Test" the darn thing - might even go for a distance record if you catch my drift . . .Splash .
Good Luck.

Every surf casting spinner I've ever owned was without fail without bail.

Yeah.. I'm going to try and fix it first.. nothin to lose
Hey OP, if you do decide to get rid of it, I will buy/trade you for it. I have been wanting to try a bailwire-less reel for a while now and could use another small reel for my perch/pickerel arsenal.

Appreciate the offer but I'll get it fixed.. besides this slight issue.. this reel is sweet!
