drop me a line [or throw me a bone] 2025

fishing user avataryugrac reply :

I have been using P-Line C21 line for the last few years, this line is tough, and has good knot strength, with the right knot. However, this stuff has LOTS of stretch. I mean to the point where you cant break it, I have been hung up before in places I cant get the boat to, and have had to cut the line, I even broke a hook on an inline spinner and it flew several feet and hit me but never broke the line. The issue with this is on long cast I am missing, or losing fish due to poor hooksets. I dont use braid on spinning reels, I fish mostly with spinning gear but do have 3 baitcast rigs, including a G Loomis crankbait rod. The question here is what do any of you guys who still fish with mono use now. I used to use Stren for many years, until I got some bad spools, [thats what I get for buying it a Wal Mart] and I just kind if strayed away from it. Dont care for the super lines, I do use braid on the baitcaster that I fish heavy cover with. I am looking for something that is supple,  yet still has low stretch and good knot strength. Dont care for straight floro, to stiff on spinning gear. Looking for opinions on mono for the most part, thanks for your input.

fishing user avatartander reply :

If I was just going to use mono, I would go with Trilene XT for baitcasters and XL for spinning. Used these two for years without any problems. I finally switched over to FC and now that is about all I use.

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

Yozuri hybrid is a copolymer that is inexpensive and a good line. #12 has a break strength of 19lbs

fishing user avatardeep reply :

Try PLine PF Original. Check the line diameter before buying (breaks closer to the stated lb-test than other brands). It's a copoly though.

Also research Sunline Armilo (no first hand info on that one).

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Check out Spyderwire Ultracast Ultimate Mono and Silver Thread Excalibur.  Possibly Izorline XXX.

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

Check out Sunline Defier Armillo. A little pricey, but well worth it. Not to stretchy and handles very well. The line is a little slick so check your knot before you cast. All mono is going to have a fair amount of stretch. At any rate this one has the least of any mono I've used.

fishing user avatarWillis reply :

I agree with Tander if you are going to use mono exclusively.  I have been using Sunline's Sniper fluorocarbon (up to 10#) the last couple of years on my spinning rigs and find them to be more than acceptable with little to no stretch.  Only problem is the price.  I generally use only 40 to 50 yards of it spliced over backing in a far less expensive line.

fishing user avatarJustinU1X reply :

Izorline XXX

Floats, low stretch, great knot strength and I like that fact that you get twice as much as yo zuri. 10lb 600yds  - 15.99 vs 10lb 1500yds -16.99. 10lb breaks around 14.5 and 12lb around 18/19.

Yo-Zuri is good I just think XXX is a little better deal.

What pound test line are you using?

Tom

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

I put Trilene XT 10 pound test on my spinning combo (I have seen tests where that line breaks around 18 pounds).

I am very wary if I am making a long cast as the stretch in mono can negate your attempt to get a good hookset. Mostly I try to avoid bombing a long cast. If you have to make long casts because of conditions where you can not get close to your target you may want to considering using braid with a leader.

I use 4#, 6# and 8# depending on the rig, but mostly 6 and 8  The 4# is on a small very light rig I use top fish creeks with low hanging limbs and narrow areas.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Try P-Line CXX 8 lb.

I was looking at the p-line cxx lines, didnt know if they had as much stretch as c-21, says on there website it does not, but I have never handled it. Money is not really an issue, but dont want to spend big bucks on something that I dont get the product I am after. Thats what fishing forums are for, and I greatly value the opinions of the members as long as they have experience and are not talking out there butts, Good response on this question and I Think I have a few ideas to run with Thanks again.  WRB, I will most likely go with your opinion, I will see how I score for Bass Pro gift cards here in a few hours, My son may be down to see me in Jan. I told him we may make a run there [BPS]  I can evaluate better then.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

All fishing line will stretch, it's only a problem when the force applied is high enough to reach the lines yield strength. With monofilament line made from Nylon the force to reach yield strength is about 50% of the ultimate or break strength. If you use 8 lb mono it will start to stretch about 4 lbs pulling force and that is a high force for bass type spinning rods. Your drag should be set at 1/3 the lb test of the line used, a little less than 3 lbs for 8 lb test mono.

The question becomes with mono is the amount of water absorbed, the temperature of the line and water resistance creating a bow in the line can make it feel like it is stretching when it isn't.

The line mfr can increase tensile strength and that tends to increase yeild strength, the down side is increased memory.

P-Line CXX is a high tensile line with moderate memory that is manageable using spinning reels with line under 10 lb test.

fishing user avatar5fishlimit reply :

Yo-zuri hybrid and Izorline are two very good copolymer lines.

For a monofilament nylon line I like to use Sunline Supernatural monofilament.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid isn't a copolymer line, it's a hybrid coextruded line with fluorocarbon jacket and one of the largest diameter to lb test lines on the market.

FY I, P-Line C21 and CXX are both very good copolymer lines.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

give  Gamma Poly Flex a try . the strongest line on the market and stretch is very minimal . Izorline XXX is good and minimal stretch in higher lb. lines but in 6-12 lb. line it does stretch quite a bit , it's what i use to use for swimbaits till i had an issue with some spools i purchased , got some Gamma and never looked back !!! .....

my line uses --

4 lb. on my spinning set up

8 lb. on my baitcasting set up

20,25, & 30 lb. on my swimbait set up

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I use C21 on a couple rods, mainly baits with trebles. It's a really good line for next to nothing. Have you tried braid with a leader? I use to be completely against braid on a spinning reel, now I only own 2 that don't have braid on them.

Anybody ever try Maxima?

Yes ~ and I like Ultra Green a lot but I've never used it as a main line on a spinning reel.

Only used it as a leader in front of my rigs with braid and as a main line on casting gear.

Great Knot strength and abrasion resistance,  perhaps a little less than average amount of stretch, and decent manageability.

It's not the cheapest nylon line you'll find but you could do worse.

fishing user avatarGetJigginWithIt reply :

I use C21 for my crankbait rod with great results. However, I beleive that for jig, t-rig probably not the best. If you do not like braid, I also use P-Line floroclear with good results. Great knot strength (I use the Uni Knot exclusively on all setups and line) and can bend hooks on snags. I have used the P-Line CXXX but did not care for how stiff it is. I ended up using the CXXX for leader line. Keep using the C21 for your crankbait setup.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Maxima line was one of the first copolymer lines on the market in the 70's. Maxima Ultra Green is good, however high memory line that doesn't always work well on spinning reels.

OK, how about Andes?

When I used to fish Andes, from what I recall it was "soft" and would stretch quite a bit, and memory was bad on it.  The IGFA line is low stretch but breaks at or right below it's rating.

Thanks for the response -

I've not tried that one.

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I know one line that used to get used quite often in light line situations which held up good was Stren's Magna Thin.  When I worked in a tacklestore we went through quite a bit of that and it worked well on spinning reels.   Just happened to remember.  Also quite strong, held up well, and was manageable.  Most liked it in the 4 & 5lb size since they were fishing trout.
