I need HELP picking out a rod and reel as a gift for my husband. He's a big time bass fisherman and he has tons of rods and reels. I'm Just trying to find something different and maybe a newer item on the market. Thanks in advance!!
Does he have a swimbait rod? These are long rods made for big lures that look like real fish, usually 7'10" to 8' long rated for lures between 3-10 oz. TW has a Sale right today with 15-20% off. IRod gen2 makes a good swimbait rod for about $150'. Look at XL swimbait rod.
Tom
PS, Shimano Cardiff 300 series reel is a good with this rod, about $110.
If you don't know the exact types of techniques or styles he fishes, you will be better off just buying him a *** 200$ gift card.
To me there isn't much thought in a gift card! A gift has meaning, a gift card not so much. Just my opinion though! So just trying to see what all you guys use. Even if he has to return it. It's the thought that counts, right?!
What is your budget?

Without knowing each and every setup it's impossible to give an answer IMO .
I'd want the gift card.
just looking for a good gift don't have a budget
I don't even know how to use this forum properly. So just bare with me lol
Ok so just forget the rod.
What's some great reels?

Daiwa tatula type r, 13 ***, any lews. I mean hard to say depends what it's used for not to mention it's a pretty open ended question
Lews Tournament Pro
No budget??? Get him a Shimano Stella!!!
Lews tournament mb 138.99 and can do almost everything you ask it too
How about an Abu Garcia Revo Rocket. I would be willing to bet he doesn't have one of those, and it would work with what he already has. Another idea would be bass fishing t-shirts, you can't go wrong with that.
Since my wife knows nothing about fishing and she knows nothing about how many stuff I have for fishing you can be 99.99% sure that whatever she purchases for me as a gift won´t be something I want or need.
I understand the desire of you giving him something in the physical form of a rod/ reel/ lure, my take ? give him a gift card so he can purchase whatever he wants.
Check his current rods and reels and see if he has an 8 foot heavy or XHeavy rod with a reel. If not go for that......It is a specific set up for large swimbaits. As far as which brand for rod and reel, I'll defer to all you swimbaiters here....
Just buy him a shimano Antares... 600$ MSRP, I Dont think anyone can be disappointed with that! Haha
I would get him a shimano metanium xg from japan lure shop for about $300 shipped or if you don't want to spend that much get him a daiwa alphas sv for $200. You need to find out if he uses right or left handed bait caster reels. You'll impress him for sure, I know I'd be.
The top of the line bass casting rod is G. Loomis NRX series, every bass angler wants this rod.
The NRX 853C JWR G is 7'1" medium heavy jig & worm rod, green series, this is wonderful all around bass rod. Price $545.
TW is Tackle Wharehouse; look online, brands "G" for G. Loomis, casting rods.
Look under "I" for iRod, swimbait bait rod mentioned earlier.
Tom
Shimano curadoi all the way,,
If you are wanting to get him a reel I highly suggest getting him some higher end Shimano which can be found here:
https://japanlureshop.com/reel/shimano/shimano-baitcasting.html?limit=all
My recomendation would be a Metanium XG in whatever hand retrieve your husband uses. This would be a gift that would be leaving in bass fisherman jumping up and down like a little kid on Christmas.
My question is do you have an available sisters. Lol.
He may enjoy a gift card/trip to the tackle shop and a day on the water with his wife more than giving him something random if you don't know what he wants. Knowing me, I'd probably shamelessly return it for something else. Let him pick out your attire and spend a day on the water with him, if you can stay out of his hair. For example, my wife LOVES running. I usually watch the kids, but she LOVES if I take the time to go running/racing with her.

any G Loomis rod especially the NRX series with any top Shimano reel. you can't loose unless he already has 1
You could also get some nice swimbaits like Huddelston or maybe an assortment of some Megabass lures.they are a lot less personal then buying a rod and reel. this is a very personal thing for a fisherman.
Would you want him to be picking out your clothes at the mall? no. but if he bought a nice accessory you would be petty happy.
A wife who goes onto BassResource to ask what equipment to buy for him?!
Sounds like your husband already has everything he needs in life! What a lucky man.

So many reels I'll just list a few concept (I'm guessing is the brand) Ardent xs1000
I have to agree with Raul and a couple others about the gift card. I think it is great that you want to put forth the effort to buy him something special that he will love to use. Unfortunately we would need to know every rod (make, model, power, action) and reel (make, model, ratio) in order to make a worthwhile suggestion as to which rod and reel to purchase. Even then we could miss the mark as duplicate rods and reels are not a bad thing if they are for favorite techniques. It is nice to be able to pick up another outfit that has a different color or size lure for the technique you are currently fishing.
Suggesting a technique specific rod and reel could wind up being a waste of money if we don't know what techniques he likes to fish or a technique he would like to try. Buying a big swimbait rod wouldn't do him much good if he is like me, and doesn't use, or have a desire to use, those type of lures. The lures themselves can get quite expensive. I can't afford $30 to $200 lures so why get interested in that technique?
No one needs 20 rods or 20 reels, but it doesn't keep us from having that many and more.
Based on the few rods and reels you mentioned, it appears he may not have many expensive rods or reels. It isn't necessary to spend $300-$500 to get a quality rod or reel. The Fenwick Aetos is a quality rod at about $180 list that is not only a nice looking rod, but sensitive, and made with quality components. The 7'2" MH-XF would make an excellent rod for jigs (and a few other techniques) I really enjoy my 7' MHF which is a little more versatile in my eyes.
A reel I can almost guarantee that he doesn't have is a Pinnacle Primmus. TW sells them at $225, but you can get one delivered for about $157 with a little searching. This reel is factory tuned.. Ideally any reel you purchased would be cleaned and properly lubed before using. However, that isn't necessary with the Primmus. Quite possibly your husband tears down new reels and re-lubes them before using. The Primmus is not only a nice looking reel, but very smooth on the retrieve and casts as good or better than any of my other reels....including supertuned reels. I've got various model reels from Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger, Lews, BPS, Abu and feel the Primmus is as nice as any of them and better than some.
As long winded as my post is, it could be that none of my suggestions would suit your husband's tastes. Maybe he feels Duckett rods are the best and the brand he would prefer to own more of.....in which case he might not be too happy with you buying an Aetos. Some guys want one line of rods and one line of reels feeling that they don't have to make a few casts to reacquaint themselves with the next combo they pick up. Some of us aren't that in tune with the cosmos and switch with no discernible difference other than having to make a minor adjustment with 2-hand cast due to a different length handle.
I completely disagree with the guys who suggest the gift card and agree with the OP that it is the lazy way out of putting some thought and effort into a gift. As convenient it may be for the giver and recipient, I've gifted my share of cards/certificates but actually appreciate when someone gets me something that I know they put forth time and effort.
My suggestion is not to get something top end like an NRX or Stella, as much as any serious basser would love it. To the OP, you stated he has a 13 *** so my suggestion is to give them (***; 800-508-6013) a phone call and have them "trick out" a reel by customizing it for him. Go to their website and check out the "Trickshop" section and you'll get an idea. What that means is you can have the reel customized with some of his (or yours!) favorite colors or something to match one of his present rods. Not sure what the cost would be but give them your budget and I am sure then 13 staff will help. And I have no affiliation with ***...
If he doesn't truly appreciate the reel, practice a little catch and release of your own, lol.
A Shimano Curado 200HG and G-Loomis MBR844C GLX
This combo will cost around $550.00 + or - a little bit depending on if you shop around.

Lazy, but might be the correct way. Depends on the recipient. Years ago I quit giving my wife gifts....period. Broke that rule 2 years ago for Christmas, and seriously regretted it. She hated the $400 gift and eventually gave it to our daughter. I didn't have $1200 for the gift she really wanted. Previously I always picked out gifts from items she told me she liked. They always went back.
OP. I'm like a couple other posters. You are a great wife coming here looking for a quality gift your husband will enjoy. Except unlike the one poster, I wouldn't be asking if you had any sisters....I'd be asking if your Mom was single now.
