Need Advice On What To Give A Guy For A Rod And Reel. Thanks 2025

I went with my Wife last Saturday to Yard sales and I was very happy that I did. I found a 7'6" Heavy carrot Stix 21 carrot gold rod with a Team Lew's reel on it. I took the combo up to the lady and talked with her about it, she told me that her husband had told her to get it out and sell it because they needed the money. She was telling me she would sell it to me for $75.00 and after thinking about it I gave her $100.00 for the combo and brought it home. Now that it is home and I've went over it and seen just how good it is, I'm talking almost brand new quality, I'm starting to have second thoughts about it, I feel like the lady was ripped off, I mean a $280.00 reel and a $200.00 rod and I bought it for $100.00? So my question is should I bring them some more money for the combo? And if you agree with me that it is worth more, then how much more should I bring them? Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

Dang that was a sweet deal. They know how much they paid for it, and it was ok for her to sell it for 75, but you gave them 100. I don't see any problem here.

SG, whenever I have taken something in to trade, rods and reels that is, I receive usually a little over 50%. That is based on excellent condition. Since you are saying that is what you have, maybe another $50.00.Just a suggestion. Might I add, your integrity is inspiring. Best of luck with your decision.

I agree. Maybe he got an incredible deal on it himself, who knows. Most people ask what they think something is worth and oftentimes, their perception is inflated and they're actually asking more than it's worth. If they were happy with 75 clams and you gave them a bonus, you did the right thing and leave it at that. All that said, if your conscience really hurts, take them $25 more bucks. Personally I don't think it's necessary, there are yard sale deals that occur all the time.

You did the right thing and you shouldn't feel bad on that at all. You gave them more money than they were asking and I guarantee they were very happy with your decision to give more than their asking price. I know I would have if I was in their position. Good job man

You owe them nothing! Like others have said, you gave them more than they were asking so IMHO, you should have a clear consience on this.

As others have said, you owe nothing but I'll tell you from experience, if you have the conscience and the empathy to give them more than they were asking, then you'll probably think about it every time you even look at that so do yourself a favor and give them another $50. You already did them solid but I know where you are coming from and what you are feeling and that is you feel you got a great deal due to someone else's misfortune and it is sticking with you and the only way you will feel better is by doing what you are already thinking of doing, I know and I feel for you as your mind is going in circles.

That sounds like the lady was selling the guys stuff without knowing.
I would steer clear of going back, you never know what might happen.

Well, if her husband cared little enough to tell his wife to sell his brand new combo (duh....she wouldn't know how much they go for) then he obviously doesn't have too much financial or sentimental value for it. I wouldn't give it a second thought! I would have gone for 75.

One time, years ago I fished a small local tournament with my young son.
At the weigh in, when they were calling off the trophy winners, my name was called for
largest bass trophy. I walked up and received my trophy feeling very proud. I walked back
and ....as I was standing there with my son, he commented, “Dad, you don’t have the largest
bass, that guy does“. I looked at the weight board, and sure enough the other guy had a bass
that was 2oz. larger than mine. I already had the trophy, and boy did I want to keep it. Their mistake I thought. Besides, why wasn’t the other guy protesting. What to do, what to do. And there was my son standing there watching to see what his Dad was going to do. Oh well, good bye trophy. I walked up and called one of the officials aside, and explained the situation to him. He informed me that each participant could only receive one trophy. That other guy was the first place winner, which is why he wasn’t protesting.
I did what my heart told me I had to do, but what my head absolutely did not want to do. I got to keep my trophy that day, but I feel my son was my biggest trophy. My son is now a man of 50, and has more integrity than any man I know. I wonder how he would have turned out if he had watched make the other choice. I still have that trophy on my desk right now as I type this. It floods my mind with pleasant memories of a great father and son outing.

That's right. Kids see everything. We need to take every opportunity to set an example. Besides, how much can you enjoy recognition for something that wasn't actually the fact. I'm about as competitive as they come and the last thing I want is a "Participation" trophy.

Hey, it is, after all, a carrot stick. Could be the last unbroken carrot stick in your neighborhood. When, you break that carrot stick - and you will - carrot sticks were notorious for being light and sensitive and broke from time to time. They have the reputation of not being the easiest company to deal with - warranty wise, if they are even still around - I don't know. I do know that the tackle store where I spend quite a bit of money absolutely, positively, won't deal with them any more and they closed out their inventory at below their cost a couple of years ago.
That being said, take the advice of Jimmy the cricket and "let your conscience be your guide."

I think you are good either way. You already gave more than the asking price, but If you feel like you need to give them more, it would be an extremely nice gesture. Shoot, you could write down your adress and send them a Christmas card annonomously with a few extra bucks tucked into it. If you are questioning it, you will probably feel better if you do give them a bit more. You are a good man, sir.

I am very sorry I did not get back to this thread until now. I had some family problems, my father had a heart attack and things have been hard for a while. He is doing much better now though and I am able to slow down a little.
Thank you all for the replies and Yes, I was feeling guilty about getting such a great deal. I did go back by and I talked with the lady's husband. He did know she was selling it for such a low price and the reason was because their son was in a four wheeler wreck and had broken his leg. They were in need of money. I tried to give the man another $100 but he would not take it, after talking for a while he did take another $40.00. I had the money to give so I was glad to help out and I got a very nice rod and reel to boot. For some reason I still do not feel like it was enough money though. My wife said I was not cut out for the yard sale life but I told her it seemed more to me to be a take advantage of some ones bad luck sale and I couldn't do it, she said that is why she loves me.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad and hope he recovers well. You did a great thing going back and talking to them. Good karma which will be paid forward.

If it were me I'd probably feel just as guilty and would probably go back and give them another 50 bucks at the minimum. Really, I'd only value the "reel" in that combo so another 50 would cover half retail. Especially like you say it's like new. Plus for me it's the holiday season and I'd feel like it would be the right thing to do.
That being said, I wouldn't think it would be a problem either if you didn't do it...you made a deal with the lady and by giving her more than her asking...you weren't trying to be malicious and she accepted. So you were being fair as you could be at the time.
